yea but look at the guys who are into the fitness....tiger, vijay, adam scott....the list goes on and on. I think the players that work out have a better swing but the larger and unfit ones have a grooved, natural, self taught one. both work well as long as you know wehre u are going to hit it, that is the key. that's just what i think.

Exactly, it's all about longevity and consistency.

Just about all of the guys you've mentioned above are hot / cold players going through some serious dry spells on Tour.

I agree 100%.

Besides the Better Golf with Fitness Blog, I have a site called GolfFitnessProducts.net. It's what I do for a living. I was just being sarcastic.

One point a lot of people miss is that the main goal of golf fitness should be injury prevention. If you want to be a better golfer, you have to golf.

Fitness will give you the opportunity to be a better golfer, and just as important, it will decrease your injury potential.

LOL, I think from your blog and screen name, I figured that out.

However, I did find it interesting that aside from Lefty, ALL the guys (and gal) you posted have gone long stretches between wins . . .

Well it isn't necessarily the key to long distance off the key. Bubba Watson who is currently the longest hitter on Tour claims he has never worked out, doesn't believe in it, and has no plans to start doing it.

We all know that John Daly has no use for workouts either....

Your right, it's all about the kinetic link. The link is to a great article about it.

They can hit the ball alright, but guys like Daly and Bubba are the exceptions. I'm not sure if they wouldn't trade some distance for some wins and some dough (Bubba is #85 and JD is 160). Although JD's distance has gotten him plenty of endorsements

Talent wins over everything. Fitness gives you the opportunity to be better, it doesn't guarantee anything.

It will defintely decrease your injury potential and that's the most important reason to start working out.

yea i sorta thought something was fishy with ur sn, and btw, phil mickelson is into fitness, maybe not like tiger but he stays fit and flexible, he's got his own trainer too. i think with golfers, an optimum weight has to be achieved, too, like duval and calcavechia experienced that a lil and when calc won the canadian open or whatev i remember him talkin about that...

I was at the range for the second time today, and saw the same guy mercelessly pounding drivers... he competes on the long drive circuit... unfortunately, I didn't get his name, but he was a hell of a nice guy, about my height, and rather jacked... he showed me both some very, very helpful stretches, and that my idea of "fitness" may not be what it really should be

Absolutely, he's certainly not obese.

Just because someone has a couple extra pounds on them doesn't mean they aren't flexible and powerful. There are plenty of huge football players and powerlifters that are very flexible, and can out run and jump higher than guys who look fit.

Pro Golf is a grind. Being in the best shape possible can only help them.

No offense to anyone on here... but people who think fitness is not "needed" are being a little ignorant. A person's fitness level is nowhere near related to their talent... i actually read john daly's book and he said he was bugging tiger about going to the fitness trailer during a rain delay and tiger's response was "if i had your talent john, i wouldn't have to work out"... having said that... daly also claims that when he loses weight his swing gets quick and his tempo gets messed up

different article about jason zubak when he won the long drive competition 3 years in a row... first year he was pretty big... second year he put on something like 40 lbs of muscle and was over 10 percent fat and now he's more lean.. less muscle mass and a lot less fat...

physical training is very specific... if you lift a lot of heavy weights really slow you'll bulk up and get used to lifting heavy weights really slow... that's where trainers and sport specific programs will come in... just because you lift some weights for a while... it doesn't mean you'll automatically swing the club better/faster!

I'd say fitness requirements are different for the different type of players.

On tour, which the main example of this thread, a lot of tour level players have a ridiculous amount of natural talent and might not require a fitness regiment that leaves them ripped or lean and mean. They just need to be fit enough to play 72 holes in 4 days while NOT carrying their bags. lol.

With the fellows I play with, I can see how fitness would help them from fading towards the end of the round- they just look tired and their scores balloon. My swing used to get a little loose and long as the day wore on when I was 30 pounds heavier and less fit.

As my level of fitness has increased, I don't fade down the stretch and if I do it's swing retardness of my own accord or that 15th club between my ears that ruins things.

I've been played 36 in one day once a week the past three weeks with two rounds mixed in on other days- I play better the second round of those 36'ers (I'm just a slow starter).

Eh, I'm going with different fitness requirements for different players.
