Virtual Roundtable 5/23/06

Welcome to the second edition of The Better Golf with Fitness "Virtual Roundtable."

Periodically, I send questions out to golf fitness professionals
throughout the country and ask them a question about golf fitness and
post them here.  Click Here for the Virtual Roundtable Archive

This month's question I posed to our golf fitness experts is:

What is the biggest "problem" or barrier when training
golfers?

"For the most part, the biggest barrier when training golfers are the misconceptions they have about strength training. They are always worried that they will "bulk up" or become inflexible from training, when those two things couldn't be farther from the truth.  The biggest "problem" with training golfers is that they are usually influenced by what they read in magazines or see on the Golf Channel and want to jump right into the "sexy" exercises, without building the foundation of dynamic flexibility, core stability and total body strength they need."
Anthony Renna, CSCS

"Most golfers believe that static stretching is the most important piece of the training puzzle. As such, golfers seem to believe that a program must be packed full of static stretches in order to be effective. They don't realize that static stretching will do very little to improve your dynamic range of motion.
This is a difficult hurdle to overcome because the golfer already has in their head what the "optimal" training program should have in it: lots of static stretching. In actuality, there are an incredible number of different activities that can produce better overall flexibility results in less time."

"Golfers as with most individuals I see at the gym have no concept of how the abdominals work. Thus most golfers train the "core" incorrectly, from the "outer unit" in instead of the "inner unit" out. The concept of having a beautiful "sixpack" that is brainwashed in the the general public is far from the truth. In fact one can have great looking abs but a very disfuncional core. Which is a good reason why 80% of golfers have lower back problems."

"Many golfers don't see golf as a sport/athletic event. Therefore they are not used to training like athletes.  They don't always understand the demands that are placed on the body during the full golf swing or the range of motion that is required to make a full swing.  They also have unrealistic expectations of their abilities and what it takes to make a real change in their motion. The idea that there is a 'magic move' or 'secret' is very prevalent.  Golf is like any other hitting/throwing sport."

Eanna Rushe MS, CSCS,

"The majority of golfers enjoy working on their game to help them improve their swing, but will not work on their bodies when they are not with a trainer.  So, I find the biggest problem with many of my clients is that they will play 18 holes, then gladly stay and practice their shots, but then meet with me for a 1/2 hour or hour and not do anything on their own until their next appointment.
So,  the responsibility ultimately falls on the golfer.  Yes, working with a trainer DOES teach a golfer WHAT to do and HOW to do it when it comes to preparing the body for a proper swing....but the golfer has to practice those drills just as much as he needs to practice at the range.
So what is the problem?....time and motivation.  Solution?....education (but then it is out of our hands!)"

"The biggest barrier I see with training golfers is their unwillingness to spend the proper time needed training their body for optimal performance.  Most of them prefer to be on the range or course all of the time and tend to misunderstand and underestimate the importance of physical conditioning in relation to their game.  Once I convince them of the need for physical conditioning, the real challenge becomes getting them to train consistently enough to prevent injuries and realize positive physical adaptations."

"One of the biggest challenges in working with golfers who seek a better game is getting them to understand 'the process' involved in improvement. There is no question that we all want a quick fix. I don't know any golfer who wouldn't want just a simple 2 part stretch that would solve all the problems in their swing or create greater distance off the tee. However, I have found results to always be commensurate with the time, energy, and effort that a golfer puts forth in the training process. Using a comprehensive training program, tracking your results and being consistent, typically yields the best results in the shortest period of time."

Susan Hill
www.fitnessforgolf.com

"The biggest problem or barrier is that golfers do not make time for fitness. They spend hours on the range hitting balls and neglect the physical component of their performance. There needs to be a balance with golf practice and physical preparation. It is easier to obtain certain positions within the golf swing if your body is flexible, stable and strong."

David Donatucci
Director International Performance Institute
941-752-2570

"One of the most trying situations is working with unilateral imbalances due to the nature of the golf swing. Whether it is from a ROM standpoint, strength differences, or coordinative function, these issues can be addressed and alleviated.  Through the use of unilateral, sequenced, or isolated movements many of these imbalances can be combated.  Determining which types of exercises will benefit each individual athlete is the challenge."

Joel Raether MAEd.
Asst. Strength and Conditioning Coach

"I absolutely agree with Anthony's statement in regards to the biases against strength training.  Along with that, another problem that I have noticed is that many golfers lack the necessary movement patterns needed to safely and correctly perform the most basic of drills, such as lunges, squats, presses, rowing etc. Of course this inability can be attributed to numerous variables.  However, I do find this deficiency surprising, especially since golf demands very refined movement skills.
Therefore, it only seems logical to coach foundational drills which will get you the most
bang for your buck and leave all the gizmos, gadgets, and "off-the-wall the golf specific drills" to the infomercials. Keep It Simple."

"Unfortunately there are many barriers to getting golfers to understand it's their body that's keeping them from playing their best golf.  I have received thousands of emails this past 6 years, and the most prevalent statement is, "I need to improve my flexibility".  This is most likely a true statement, but improving flexibility without improving strength is a huge mistake.  Having an improved range of motion specific to your golf swing will no doubt have a positive impact on your golf swing, but to combine an improved level of golf-specific strength with it is the ultimate.  As golfers get older, the physical decline is rapid and very noticeable.  It's time the older golfer should focus on improving the physical component to their golf swing to see improvement on the course."
