Heads up. Fake R7 425's on e-bay

Saw one in person today at work
While I was working at the golf shop today, a customer came in with an R7 with a messed up screw. It was just free-wheeling in the port and wouldn't come out. He bought it off ebay but he was hoping we could send it to Taylormade for warranty. After further inspecting the club, it was clear that the club was a fake. The shaft color was way off - more of an orange than yellow and blue writing on the shaft where there was black on the real Taylors. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to ask the guy who the ebay seller was but he got screwed over big time. So just be wary. There are jackasses out there.

Tracy....I know the guy you are talking about. He brought it in the club shop the other day and I looked at it. His wrench was all wrong, the color of the Rombax was all wrong. The weight screws were all wrong. They looked similar but the shape of the wrench hole was very rough looking. The surface of the two rear screw ports on the sole were rough looking. On initial glance it could pass but if you looked at it closely, no way.

I can't believe he took it to you. I pointed out all the problems with the head and the shaft color to him. We even pulled out about 6 Rombax pulls and a real R7 R25 to compare the color to his. Worst of all the bottom screw hole closest to the hosel......we looked in it and it looked to be blocked so we stuck in his fake wrench in the hole......when we pulled it out a long trail of rat glue followed it. We told him it was a fake, yet he was still talking about doing a shaft change. Which I thought was ridiculous to even consider putting it in a fake head.

Good catch and thank goodness he didn't get away with it.

There was a guy from Shanghei selling Titleist drivers and irons last year that were fakes. First I asked him about the shafts, He could not respond. Then I gave him some options and he said he had them all. The giveaway was his Titleist 9.0 10.0 and 11.0 degree drivers. I e-mailed him that Titleist only made 1/2 degree lofts and he said "Oh I have those too".

The guy was completely bogus. Its buyer beware. I don't know what paypal or ebay would have done.

There have been a bunch of listings selling R7 425s, SQs, Ping Craz-Es, Slingshots and the other most popular clubs. All are from the same people and the usual giveaway, should one be needed, is that they are very cheap, and payment is requested in 'RMB'. Most of the time the descriptions also come up as gobbledegook.

Like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/R7-460-REAX-Fujikul...1QQcmdZViewItem

Slightly more sophisticated, but worse because they charge more, are the auctions from Europe selling these same clubs but with the price in Euros or Pounds, but based in Hong Kong. Like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Cleveland-HIBORE-Dr...1QQcmdZViewItem

The giveaway here is the shaft. HiBores don't come with Vista Pros. I've seen HiBores with 'Vista Pros' and the same pics listed by sellers from Germany, the UK, Hong Kong and China. The sad thing is that this guy has 55 positive feedbacks, in several languages.

Sometimes eBay gets to them and deregisters, but obviously there is enough business in the scam to keep it going.

I buy a lot of clubs from the States and have them shipped out to me in Australia, but I would never buy anything for sale in US eBay that isn't from a US seller. In fact I won't buy a 'New' driver from any eBay seller who doesn't have long and extensive feedback. The best way to avoid fake clubs is buy ones that have been used. Fakers don't take them out on the course.

As for the R7 425 owner mentioned above, he obviously knows his club is a fake because Pitbull told him. I'd bet he knew before that and was hoping to do a warranty swap and that if you checked other shops in Hawaii he would have been there too.

Cheers

Most legitimate clubs have laser etched serial numbers. On a Taylormade R7 425, for example, this is on the rear of the metal strip below the ferrule. Callaway Ft3s have it on the sole with an etched watermark and Ping G5s have it just above the loft marking. Many fakes do not have a serial number, or have the wrong number of letters.

However, that is laziness on their part. If you can fake a whole club it is probably not that hard to laser etch a few numbers.

It gets even trickier with irons. Callaway, for example, only put the serial number for each set on one of the irons (the 8 from memory).

Then you have 'Tour' clubs which usually have no serial number. Or fakes which pretend to be Tour clubs to excuse their lack of a serial number, such as this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Brand-New-Taylormad...1QQcmdZViewItem

I dunno, but I'm not sure why you'd remove a pink Aldila and reinstall the MAS.

Your best bet if you are concerned is to ask the seller to send you the serial number and then check it with the manufacturer. Callaway, Ping, Nike and TaylorMade, and most likely the other majors, can tell you from that.

Ping I believe has an online serial checker.

Otherwise, as I said above, I'd be very wary of sellers who have brand new just released clubs (especially expensive ones) and no history of selling such clubs.

Cheers

Is there a better way to tell if a club is a counterfeit apart from comparing it to a legitimate version? Like serial numbers, etc?

The fake R7 the guy had that I saw had a serial number. Like I said upon initial view the club looked real....but if you compared the serial numbers to a real one, the Font was different.

I guess he realized he got scammed and is trying to recoup his lost money by scamming someone else. I felt bad for him until I found out he took the club to you too. He told us he didn't realize it was fake and seemed to be surprised when we told him.

Anyway, guys, bid with caution.
