Long Sleeve hot weather shirts

Recommended Posts

suggestions?
Getting ready for a hot, sunny summer. i always use sunblock but it always leaves me sticky and nasty. plus i still get sunburned sometimes, even after re-applying at the turn. Plus i can go through a bottle in like a week which adds up $$.

For this summer i've already invested in a hat that shades my neck and ears. now i'm looking for some "performance" long sleeve shirts to wear under my golf polo. a long sleeve that is made to be worn in the heat (i regularly play in 110+ degrees all summer)

I tried on the under armor heat tech shirts and they seem promising. reasonable @ $35.

anybody else have other suggestions? does nike make anything worthwhile? does target have anything on the cheap? i wanted to check out some outdoor spots like REI to see what they have. I noticed some shirts have UPF which supposedly is like built in sunscreen on the shirts which is a plus.

It doesn't keep you cool, it prevents skin cancer and is a way to avoid suntan lotion. I would lovevto find put if a paper thin long sleeve shirt exists. The sun burns my eyes and skin now more than ever. Adidas has some decent long sleeve shirts. I suspect a microfiber shirt is the only type of shirt that will be thin and cool enough in the summer.

I see bikers like these due to reducing "sun exhaustion". Is that why, or are they physically cooler?

under armour heat gear long sleeve compression shirts, you can still wear your regular polos over them so it keeps you from having to buy a ton of new shirts.

There's just no way in hell you could wear a long sleeve shirt here in the summertime, regardless of what technology it's employing. 100 degrees and 90% humidity is a slog to be sure. There are plenty of suntan products that aren't greasy and are absorbed quickly and leave no residue.

I'm big on the Nike thermal sleeves and am curious about the sun sleeves. Keeps the arms covered, but with a climacool/drifit type of shirt should keep your core cool. It'd be hard to do down south though as hot as it gets down there, but certainly worth a shot and with a couple of colors you're all set. And right now on sale at tgw.com for $21.

Based on the couple of times I wear them (usually when its really hot in the summertime) and by what I gather on responses I believe the "cooler" feeling isn't necessary true but rather irritates the skin less, hence you don't get this itching, burning sensation when exposed to the sun. That's where maybe the "cooler' feeling come from some mention...Makes sense ?

Edit: Mine go in the washer after the round, they are sweaty...

The op was looking for something to wear "under my polos" to help reduce his sun exposure while limiting the amount of additional heat that would be added by this additional layer. Unless he is looking to increase the sun protection under his polos as well, the best possible solution is the Nike UV Sun sleeves. They add the SPF protection on his arms that he is looking for, without adding any heat under his shirt. Any other opinions?

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm in a dry desert heat so humidity is not a concern (THANK HEAVENS). i am mainly looking for sun protection on my arms, more so than a cooling base layer. i'd prefer not to sacrifice added heat to obtain the protection, but i can't really tell the difference between 110 degrees and 112 degrees

those nike sun sleeves look perfect. went to some local spots to try to find them but no luck. and the one review on the web was how a guy sized wrong so i was really hoping to see these in person so i could try them on. I'll check out some big box sports stores this weekend and try to find them, dicks, sports authority, pga superstore. if i can't find them i'll probably just get the underarmour heat gear shirt until i come across those sleeves.

i did see a super cheap alternative at Van's that were basically sleeves cut off a long sleeve shirt w/ elastic at each end. 50/50 cotton ply blend and baggy as hell.

The problem with most sunblocks is that they don't reflect the suns rays, they just make us less susceptible to burning. Only sunblocks with Zinc in them actually block the radiation, but I haven't found a brand yet that isn't miserable to wear (probably the best is Blue Lizard Sport, but it still lingers on your skin for days).

Try Patagonia , ExOfficio or Tilley . They all make sun protection clothing. I live in Alaska and when I travel to the lower 48, I always wear long sleeve shirts. To me a long sleeve shirt is much cooler than bare skin. The fabric keeps the sun from baking your skin and also evaporates the moisture to keep you cool. Have you ever seen the Middle Eastern clothing? The hotter it gets the more they wear. I have hiked in the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and the Mojave desert all in long sleeves.

Good luck.
Ever hiked a golf course, in Houston, in August in long sleeves? The trees do very well to keep any kind of breeze from moving through the course, and when it is near 100 degrees and 90% humidity, I cannot imagine you would last long in long sleeves.

I believe the initial thread was more about skin protection than comfort. I'm at the point where I'll sacrifice comfort to avoid cancer. A friend of mine diagnosed with skin cancer must use long sleeves to play golf. The Patagonia shirts are nice, however, they're desgined for fishing and hiking instead of golf.

i ended up getting Pearl Izuma sun sleeves from REI @$20. Made for bicyclists, but pretty much exactly the same as any other dri-fit type sun sleeve like the nike ones. Wore them over the weekend and theyre exactly what i was looking for

Also ordered the $8 from the bay. those ahven't come in yet. interested to see how they compare

I ordered the nike's a few days ago and have been able to play a round in them. they are perfect and exceptionally light and breath great. add very little 'warmth' to the already hot temperatures around the country.

For people looking for sizing info, I'm thin (6' 150ish lbs with shorter arms, Bicep measures just under 12" around at its widest just over 11" above the bicep where these pull up to and the XS-S fits me perfectly....

that info will do about 98% of the people reading this no good at all.

For those that are saying use the UA compression shirts the benefit to the sleeves is that air can still get under your polo sleeves and cool you down. The cuff at the end of a long sleeve shirt keeps that air from getting in. The sleeves are perfect, I guess they could be from any company you just have to find the right one for you.
