Not in comparison but the exotics is a SERIOUSLY long club... carries and rolls. Longer than the 3 J33 460s I had, 905R, SQ Max, FT-3, G5. There is one club I want to try, which is the NVG2 Tour I've read about, otherwise I will not replace my exotics for anything. You could offer me a r7 460 TP for it and I'd say no.

tickyboy,

Could you compare the Exotics 9* with the J33R 460s you had. I have a J33R 8.5* and absolutely crush it, even though it still launches a little higher than I'd like at 8.5* with a low-launch shaft.

Just bought a 905R 8.5 with Speeder 757 (not Titleist Speeder) cause of all the hype. Absolutely hate it. Too light, too much spin, just balloons and goes nowhere for me. Not sure if it is the shaft or head, but I'm probably gonna get rid of it.

Just wondering what loft you played on the J33R and how the launch angle, etc., compares to the Exotics. As much as I like the J33R, I'd swtich if I could find a longer driver that was just as accurate.

I currently own the 460R Tour, R7 Tour, and two TEE (10.5 Retail, 8.5 Tour). Since purchasing the first TEE (10.5) and putting a 1027 prototype in it I have only taken it out of the bag for the 8.5 with a GD CP02. The 460R and R7 also have the same exact same 1027 shaft and although both are very nice the TEE's have consistantly out performed them by hitting the fairway more often. Distance I find is just slightly shorter than my 460R.

The bridgestone has a more muted sound coupled with a slightly dull feel at impact, but its treated me great as far as trajectoryt and distance.

The R7 is 400cc but likely the best feeling of them all at impact. Primarily because I can tell exactly where the ball came off the face. It also has a more balanced feel overall as compared to the 460cc heads.

The TEE's however have to be one of the most underated heads out there. The deep black paint coupled with a very nice looking 460cc head design lends itself to setup beautifully. From there its just pull the trigger. I haven't jotted it down, but I'd say it finds 2 maybe 3 fairways more on average than the others over 18 holes for whatever reason. Could very well be the setup and the confidence I have with them.

Very odd. I have a TEE 9* now and sold off my 3 J33R's, FT3 Tour.

tickyboy/Dyno,

Come on. Need the info. Don't make me beg.

I've got a J33R which I really like. It's longer than anything else I've hit, but still launches a little bit high.

What do you like more about the TEE? And how do launch/spin on the 9* compare to the J33R?

SHABOOM.

I loved my J33's but experienced a mild ego blow while trialing vs FT3 9.5 Tour. I have a Pureflight (ballspeed, swingspeed) and experienced a consistent 3 mph faster ballspeed with the FT3. Didn't see a real difference in distance but it was irritating that I possibly had to bag the Callaway. :friends:

As far as comparisons to the TEE, the J33 was tighter to spec (within 0.3* on all heads for both loft and face angle). Feel is superior as the muted sound of the J33 is intoxicating in a world of clanky azz Cobras. However the TEE is a tad more forgiving (helpful for 30 hcp'ers like us), especially off the toe and is easier to draw. I had been fighting hooks at the time I purchased the J33's and they completely cured them. TEE head was only 195g, so I bumped it up to my preferred 204g. TEE hits higher than the J33 for certain. I didn't find the J33's particularly low hitting as most report.

Ballspin is primarily a byproduct of swing mechanics, face contact and loft. I couldn't say whether both spin the same but the J33's more forward CG probably gives it the edge here though I had ballooned many shots with the J33R 10.5* which I traded for a 9.5. I haven't had such issues with the TEE but likely it's more swing related than anything. I'm very pleased with the overall characteristics of the TEE but don't feel it'll be an improvement for you due to it's higher ballflight in a similar loft.

BTW Tom Wishon just mentioned in his latest report that he'd underestimated the effect of vertical gear effect on ballspin. Using a new state of the art launch monitor (Trackman), they found a difference of about 800 rpm between upper face contact and center contact. I found that very interesting.

Thanks Dyno!

Very detailed response. Think I'll keep my J33's in the bag for now. But may have to breakdown and finally try the FT-3. Just don't like the look.

Very interesting comment on spin. That's why my longest drives always seem to be ones that fly a mile high. On the launch monitor, I've found that I get the best theoretical launch angle (~12*) for my SS with a moderate tee height, but spin is too high. I get the best spin rates when I tee it high, but then launch angle increases to 14-15*.

Interestingly, the longest driver I've ever had was my original Ping TISI at 7* of loft, teed at max height. But never did a launch monitor with that club. I'm thinking that it provided the best of both worlds, and I'm thinking about looking at some lower-lofted drivers (e.g., 7*-7.5*).

Thanks again.

Hope it helped a bit. I think the FT3 is an outstanding head but the sound at impact, though not loud, is just a bit odd. Sound is a direct correlator to feel so in effect I hated the feel. At the range it was fine because of the enclosed space but on the course I could barely tell if I hit the ball. Go figure, diff strokes for diff folks.

You can definitely see if your spin is good by observing the peak of the trajectory. If the ballflight flattens out off a high initial launch, you know it's good. If it peaks and drops, too much spin. If it flattens then dies, too little. According to Wishon, to keep spin down, the golfer must attain a straightline relationship between the lead arm and the shaft at impact. Also by going to a lower loft and teeing higher, you can maximize ballspeed by a small amount. So maybe you onto something....low loft, deep face, medium tip firmness for more vert gear effect. Have fun....
