Irons - Too Stiff Shaft

Benefits of Reshafting?
I am just starting out and currently have a 28 index. My irons are Mizuno MX-20s with Dynalite Gold S300. I would use a 6 iron to carry 150 yds. and my swing speed with a 6 iron was recently measured in the 68 mph range. My tempo is average. When I mishit, I get a dying bird slice. Based upon what I have read, the shafts I have are too stiff for my old man swing (apologies to old men everywhere). Will I get a noticable performance improvement by reshafting (e.g. Nippon NS Pro 950 regular or Dnyamic Gold Lite R300)? I am willing to put the time in it will take to improve, but I don't want to make that process any harder than it has to be. Thanks.

I had a similar encounter. In my irons i had extra stiff when i swung at 75mph.

I went from 14 to 7 handicap but thought i have to change as my swing speed is not going to get faster and it doesn't need to for me to get better. I had these for 3 years till two weeks ago i got them reshafted for regulars.

The difference has been huge! Mishits dont loose distance half as much as i used to and the flight, especially with long irons, is much better. I have already gone down to 6 and feel as though i can get lower now.

My advice is if you like the head stlye get it done beecause it is well worth it. I went for the black gold shaft which looks amazing!

MojoEd,

I believe you will benefit from R flex steel and the Nippon 950 is a great option, if you stay with TT shafts in your situation I would opt for the Dynalite Gold SL in R flex as opposed to the Dynamic Gold Lite R300. I've played almost all the TT shafts (not BlackGold) and Dynamic Gold Lite shafts are softer than the standard Dynamic Gold but not as light or high trajectory as Nippon 950's or Dynalite Gold SL. Either the 950 R flex (97 grams, low bend point) or the Dynalite Gold SL R flex (103 grams, low bend point) should aid with a slightly higher iron SS and higher trajectory than your Dynalite Gold S300's = more carry distance. I liked the feel and kick of standard weight Dynalite Gold much more than Dynamic Gold Lite and I found the trajectory to be higher, so if you don't want a superlight steel shaft IMO the R flex Dynalite Gold will work better for you than R flex Dynamic Gold Lite. If you don't have a trusted club builder you can send your MX-20's back to Mizuno for a re-shaft with the 950's, DLG SL, or DLG, Mizuno used to offer the Dynamic Gold Lite but that shaft is no longer an option on their website.

Another good option might be graphite iron shafts, even lighter than the superlight steel options and if fit for the right weight and flex shaft you will likely see more iron distance. There are so many good graphite iron shaft options that you really should try to consult with a reputable professional club builder to make the proper selection. If you need a club builder recommendation you could post a thread in this forum asking other members for a recommendation in your area. Another huge benefit of working with a good local club builder is fitting, in addition to proper shaft and flex a certified fitting professional will make sure that your irons have the proper shaft length and lie angle = all of those factors should amount to much better iron play. IMO the MX-20's are excellent irons so it's worth finding the right shaft and making sure they fit your swing.

Good Luck.

All great advice. The NS950s are a great shaft. Light weight with a great feel during the swing and at impact.

NS Pro even have lighter shaft, 850 and 750. The 850 is a little more expensive and the 750 will cost almost double the 950. If you can play 950's go for it, the other shafts are easier to break. The 750 are very funky looking with some sort of graphite (or something else) braid at the butt end near the grip. They can add distance like 15-20 yards over DG R300. But for the hard hitter, these shaft will play too soft even on the S Flex.

Sounds like the same problem im having. My rac tp cb's came with s300's and I know they're a little too stiff for me.

I really want to try out these nippon ns950's or project x 5.5. does anyone know how these 2 shafts compare? Also I don't know where to buy thens 950's. Could anyone give me a link or recommend a place to buy them from?

If you think the S300s are too stiff then the PX 5.5 will also be too stiff, depending on your release action. I switched from PX 5.5 to the NS950s and love them. 5.5 were too stiff in the long irons for me. But I'm hitting my 3 iron better than ever with the 950s. There's a big green on my home range with a flag in the middle at 196 and I'm flying over the flag to the back of that green with the 3 iron.

I also have S300 in my Vokey wedges and I'm thinking of switching them out for the NS1050s.

Check for Nippon dealers on shaftology.com
