Remember, Greg Norman owns part of the company. I think that man knows how to make money.

Here is what Golf Week posted in July:

"Barry Schneider still may be CEO of MacGregor Golf, but now in name only, as the company’s board of directors has relieved him of his operational duties.

Instead, MacGregor will be run by Duff Meyercord – a partner at New York-based turnaround specialists Carl Marks Advisory Group – who will serve as president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. Meyercord will oversee all global operations at MacGregor, which generates roughly $150 million in annual revenues.

Each of the Albany, Ga.-based company’s subsidiaries will report directly to Meyercord. Reid Gorman will continue to lead MacGregor North America as its president; John Ennis will run the European division; and Makoto Tanaka remains in charge of MacGregor Asia. In addition, Suzy Biszantz will continue to serve as president and CEO of the Greg Norman Collection, which MacGregor bought last fall in a deal that made Norman a significant investor and a board member.

Schneider, who is majority owner of MacGregor with an approximate 60 percent stake, will remain with the company and focus “on longer-term strategic matters,” according to a company official.

Neither Schneider nor Norman could be reached for comment.

Sources close to the management change said Schneider’s repositioning was addressed in early July after an emergency meeting of MacGregor’s directors. They had been voicing concerns about Schneider’s penchant for micro-management and the company’s financial expectations.

While praising Schneider’s energy and passion, Gorman expects immediate benefits from the leadership change.

“This business has been managed from California where Barry lives ever since he bought it in 1998,” Gorman said. “And he wanted to be involved in every decision. Duff’s position is: ‘You know what you are doing, so do it.’ ”

In addition, Gorman said a majority of MacGregor’s new products will be developed in the U.S. – with American consumers in mind – rather than in Japan, where such tasks have been conducted.

Meyercord has experience in golf as well. He is a founding director of AMF Golf Management, which provides advisory services to golf professionals and the clubs they serve, and a former president at Baltusrol Golf Club, where he has chaired or co-chaired three U.S. Open committees."

An informative post if ever there was one!

I for one hope MacGregor get back on the horse. An iconic maufacturer like MacGregor (and Hogan) should not be relegated to the realms of the also-ran.

Thanks for posting this. That is good news. Schneider seemed to be very focused on a certain "techy" edge to the company, when their biggest asset- their history as a great club making company- was thrown to the wayside. Hopefully this means more solid products coming from Mac in the future.

I always wanted a set of 1025M's since I can remember. I remember when Badds said they were the "best irons" he ever hit, from the first shot.

Anyway, I picked up an OLD set of macgregor irons at Goodwill recently (called Reverse Draft irons) and I really like the long irons. I seem to almost hit them perfect. I'd like to fill in the short irons of my bag (7-P) with 1025M's. That would be nice. They are some unreal looking clubs.

For those of you who own the 1025M's, are the short irons that forgiving?

I have been playing the 1025M's for almost two years now and I think they are great. If you look long enough you should see some online you can pick up either on ebay or golfclubexchange, I got a second set as a backup too.

The short irons, they are easy to hit and nice to look at too! I love them.

Something that is funny about them too, other people love them. Its because they either know what they are from a few years ago when they were new, or they think I am playing a 30 year old set of clubs and want to know more about them. They really are a great set from MacGregor.

Who does Baddley play for? All Taylor Made woods and MacGregor irons (which they don't even offer, just some horrid beat to death japanese hollow game improvement version).

Badds plays a form of their M675's. All custom, of course. Do you really think you can buy Tiger's blades? Um, no. I look for Badds to have most of Mac's new (2008) stuff in his bag next year.

Doesn't MacGregor offer custom clubs/grinds from Don White? You'd probably pay a pretty penny, but if you really wanted something closer to that of what Badds plays, I think they have you covered.

My thoughts?

Keep the high tech for the Drivers but have it less busy on the sole -- the NVG2 with the cup face is a fine driver - but the sound could be better (lol).

Keep a traditional profile in the irons with high tech design - traditional looks, good (or choice of) grinds, designed well.

Wedges -- forged in soft steel with a variety of grinds

Fairways -- traditional looking as possible utilizing a design that maxes out forgiveness.

I'd emphasize custom fitting -- and raise your profile on the tours. I'd probably market myself as a custom fitting, high end company and make a niche market for my product. Not too pricey, but not cheap. Custom Shafts, etc. Get friendly with clubbuilders. Sell heads to custom clubmakers with the proviso that they must sell the whole club. Mizuno is doing this, Bobby Jones-Ortiz is doing this ---- why not? Get friendly with brick and mortar retailers -- nice margins -- custom fitting.

Downsize the operation to make it more efficient while keeping their senior craftsmen.

Well, I should be MR MacGregor not MR MIZUN0, i have their irons, hybrids, woods, and going to get their driver. Best clubs in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Mizuno-I don't even see a Mizuno in your bag. LOL I just got the M685's and I would put them up against any forged CB out there. Sweet clubs. And same goes for the NVG2 driver. I am getting their Hybrid, too. I heard it's great as well. Mac just needs to do better marketing here in the US. I guess they are huge in Japan. They even have their own store with only Macgregor clubs. But, that can't last forever. They need to turn Mac into a Ping type operation here in the US, IMO.
