TP Red alternative?

outwardnine

Recommended Posts

Need to start looking now........
I'm currently using the TP Red/LDP and I'm getting a little scared about when they run out.

What are everyones favourite alternatives to the mighty TP Red?

The Things I love about them are as follows.....

Distance - awesome

Spin - predictable

Wind - doesn't seem to bother them

Roll - lots from the driver

OK, so they cut up easily, but who cares.

A little about me as extra info

12 h'cap
SS ~100mph
Stock shot - draw
Left handed (don't laugh!)
Average drive ~260 yards

I've tried the following and here are my findings

Nike one Black - Spun plenty but didn't go anywhere off the driver
ProV1X - Nice ball but I just can't compress it on a cold day
Pro V1 - No good in the wind
Bridgestone B330RX - Didn't spin enough on the wedges
Bridgestone B330 - Solid but unremarkable ball
TP Black - No, No, No, No, No!

Any other suggestions? (I'm down to my last dozen TP Reds)

Thanks

James.

i have not yet tried the FG Tour for myself, but it has drawn rave reviews from many on this forum. i have played the C25, which is Wilson's ionomer 3-piece, and it's my favorite midrange non-urethane 3-piece ball.

the FG Tour is worth trying for the following reasons:

1) according to testing by GolfBallTest.org, it's the lowest compression tour ball currently on the market, along with the B330-RX and the Z-Star.

2) GBT's tests also show that the FG Tour has the softest cover currently on the market--as soft as the 2006 ProV1.

3) the shallow dimple design makes for stable ball flight in the wind.

4) it's a bit cheaper than the other tour balls at $35/doz, or so.

I was in a similar circumstance to the OP. The TM TP Red was a great ball.
I tried all the balls mentioned plus the others and all had +/-'s that I think we just need to adapt too.
There is no holy grail ball in golf.

I think we get hung up on what we cannot have. I noticed I started getting really anxious when my supply of Reds was running low. I caught myself and thought that rather than lamenting the loss of a ball, I should seriously try another ball and see if it compares SCORE wise. I tried the Nike D and shot scores very close to what I did with the Red. For giggles I also tried the Gamer V.2 and was with and scored just outside what I normally do on the same course. Go figure. However, I just didn't like the feel of the Gamer and feel is part of the experience.

I have yet to try the FG Tour. I can't find it anywhere around here.

When my Reds run out I will probably be switching to the ZStar-X from Srixon or the Penta, whichever is softer feeling to me off the putter face. That's why I absolutely love the TP Red - lower spin on full irons and wedges, but still soft around the green.

Try the Penta. I love the distance I get off the driver but the soft feel I get off the irons and putter.

I have 3 dozen left, but I'm also getting the AAAAA and AAAA rated balls from Golf Ball Nut on eBay for social/practice rounds. Not that I've been playing competitively, lol. Not yet at least. I was looking to try one of the Callaway i series next, but may just go straight to the Wilson, given the opinions here.

I dont think the Penta ball is much like the TP Red LDP performance wise. it;s higher launching and spins more. It plays more like a soft TP Black LDP. I found a Callaway i series ball and played a few holes with it and it seemed to perform a lot like the TP red. Unfortunately I cant rem which i series ball it was. it was lower launching, stout into the wind, and a similar ball feel to the TP red. I;m well stocked on TP reds and havent even been experimenting w. other balls

I just wonder where the guy got Nike blacks? I really like the pro v, and for me, even at 112 SS, it plays so much better and feels so much superior than the v1x, or any other ball. However, I have two dozen of the new iteration, and still play the older right now, since my stash includes ix cally and b330s, both good ones!

The Nike One Black was a ball I found in the woods. Looks like I'll just have to stock up on TP Reds now while I can. I think I might give the FG Tour a try, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

What are the callaway balls like, the last ones I played were the original HX Tour (good ball but it felt like a top flite) and the Tour 56 (softer but went absolutely nowhere). Are the new ones any better?

IMO, the Tour 56 was a better ball than the newer balls from Callaway. But full wedge and iron shots to the green it is tough to keep them on the green as you can suck them back a long ways!

Recently, I tried some TP Red's, and I was pleasantly surprised! Not as durable as a Penta, but a great ball! I could take a full iron shot all the way out to 180 yards the ball would hit and bounce and suck back to right where the ball divot was. Loved the point and shoot aspect of these!

I just received 3 more dozen of these LDP's from GolfBallNut.com. :D

If you want to try a killer ball, try the Maxfli Tour balls, these are a pretty amazing ball that may be a great replacement! Practice rounds I play used balls, tournements and money games ill play the Maxfli's.

That doesn't surprise me actually, Maxfli made amazing balls back in the 90s, one of the last ones being the Maxfli Revolution HT (I think) that was balata. That's easily one of my favorite balls ever.

I think that the OP should definitely try the Z-Star, it is a great ball. I love the TP Black due to the extra distance I get over the Red but see how it is not for everyone. The Tour i(s) is also a fantastic ball that spins a little more than the Black but less than the Penta. I bet the Tour i(z) would be a good choice for a Red fan. I like the Penta but it can balloon on me with the driver. I use the Penta on par 3s and short 4s. Next on the try list is the 330 RX and 330 S, according to Bridgestone's own data both fit my SS although I am at the low end of the 330 S.

Penta is the closest in performance, but pricey.

Callaway balls are terrific, the Tour i(s) will feel the most similar off of the putter and wedge. They are so stable in the wind.

Perhaps the new B-330 RX-S should be a candidate. Improved spin versus the RX. (I have a few, but have yet to try)

I will also vouch for the new Maxfli Tour golf balls. :clapping: The Tour is soft just like the Reds, but a slight bit spiny on long irons. The Tour XD is fantastic, but I also prefer the firmer feel and slight click off of the putter. If they priced them at $35 they would have no equal.

Hate to push you to another ball that is being discontinued (though you can stock up on them for a good price right now), the Callaway ix.

The ix has that same sort of "firm" feel that the Reds have, though it will give a little more spin around the green. It also have a hice heavy "thunk" off the club face - much less "springy" feeling than other balls; if anything, this is what reminds me the most of the Reds, that "solid" feeling.

Worth a tray at the $30/doz (or less) that they seem to be available for.
