Distance gaps of irons

How many yards should each iron hit father than the one before it. For example, I hit my short irons pretty well and each one goes farther than the iron before it. However, in the longer irons, the gaps between clubs in much smaller and my distances don't increase as much. So the gap between my 9 and 8 iron is a lot larger than the gap between the 6 and 5 iron. Is this normal or is something wrong?

ummm...that's probably pretty normal for a higher handicap golfer. But it isn't a good thing. If anything, you might want your distance gaps to be larger in the long irons than in the short irons. But, generally speaking, a 10 yard gap between irons is a good target. You want the gaps to be tighter in the range you expect to hit most of your approach shots.

 

I'd get some impact tape and see what kind of contact you're making with the longer clubs. Ideally, you'd hit the center of the clubface each time. I suspect you're swinging too hard with all of your clubs...and losing control with the longer irons because they are harder to control. You could probably stand to swing a little easier with all of your clubs and make better contact with the ball in the center of the clubface.
