What do you think Scotty Cameron thinks of...?

I spend all day in a service van thinking about golf equipment and this question just dawned on me. What do you think Scotty thinks of guys like Tom Slighter altering his creations by welding on different necks, changing finishes and other things. I'm not saying that Tom is a bad guy for doing it, actually I'm thinking of having him do some work for me. Personally it would bother me if someone altered my designs. I guess really this should start with what do you think TP Mills thought of scotty, then scotty's thoughts of slighter. Has Scotty ever come out and said how he feels on the subject?

this has been discussed many times and it never results in anything positive. I suggest we not re-visit the "chicken or the egg" discussion.

It wouldn't be right for Scotty Cameron to be upset with Tom Slighter for altering his putters when in fact Scotty Cameron himself started out by altering Karsten Solheims' putters now would it? IBTL, Simp

I don't think this is a thread trying to rip on Scotty copying other designs.

If I'm Scotty Cameron, I'd be interested in seeing what others have done with the product I've created. Scotty's created an entire sub industry of aftermarket goods. Just along of the lines of people customizing cars with aftermarket products, I'm sure the original manufacturers are intrigued by what some people have done with their product and at other times shudder.

Golf equipment seems cyclical -- there are a few basic designs floating around out there that cycle or re-cycle every few years, decades, etc. You release the same basic head with a slightly different metal, a different insert, a different paint finish, and a sight line instead of a sight dot and BAM! $300 worth of new product, and no patent or trademark violations to boot (if putter designers even bother to register for them to begin with).

Scotty acknowledges this, even with his own work, and thus it is not surprising he'd barely blink an eye if someone "stole" his designs. Here's a quote from a recent Golf Digest interview:

"Is my Newport putter a takeoff on the Ping Anser? Of course it is. Is the American Classic similar to the Bulls Eye? Certainly. But is it wrong to take off on their original designs and try to make them better? Absolutely not. Schwinn didn't invent the bicycle, but I dare you to call the Grey Ghost model a knockoff. My approach to putter design is the same."

He is also just as concerned about quality control and branding as he is about the basic design themselves Another quote from the same article:

"The price points on my putters are relatively high, but you aren't just buying performance. You're buying confidence. It's human nature to have greater faith in something you've paid a premium for. On the other hand, the putters I make had better deliver, because if a $5 putter you grab out of a barrel performs better than a putter that costs $275, we both know which one you'll pick."

I'm not trying to rip on any of the guys, Cameron, Slighter, etc. I'm just curious as to what he thinks about people customizing his putters by changing necks, finishes and other things. His custom shop seems so limited and just wonder what he thinks of guys like slighter welding a new neck on one of his putters. Many feel that his custom shop is very limited as to what can be customized on a Cameron putter, mostly because if he offered unlimited customization he would be overwhelmed with the volume of work to be done. I've even heard that he doesn't always satisfy a tour players request for customization.

if i'm scotty cameron i'd realize their is such a huge demand and market for customization that i might wanna start making putters in something other than 35 inches and 320 gr heads for retail.

by the way i've seen firsthand work that tom has done on putters and all things being equal i'd send my stuff to him any day. always rooting for the little guy!!

Scotty doesn't need the money. He is very loyal to the Titleist and the collectors market. The most proven design is Karstens, maybe that's why everyone uses that as a template. SC had an issue with people modifying Cameron to look like "Tour" putters for profit and so he came out with authentication. The Custom shop was to meet demand for restoration but, to also aid the collectors market as well. He isn't going to allow every Tour only marking and I'm quite surprise there have been as many Circle T items open to CC members. Scotty has also started to make many 33/350 and even 34/350 gram putters now. That has been changing over the past few years. In fact, if you look at companies like Oddy and TM, how many 350g Retail putters do they make?

For people who like to try and flip putters. There are only a handful of guys you can buy putters from and hope to get anything back. There Scotty, RJB, TP Mills, Bobby Grace, and to a lesser extent BG. Kevin Colbert and Slighter do great aftermarket work but, obviously they can't do certain things for legal reasons...
