84425's Old-school WITB

Recommended Posts

Wood Brothers, Taylor Made, Daiwa and PING
Seeing as it's 19 years ago that Ian Baker Finch won the Open, I thought it would as good a time as any to post a new WITB. I've posted one before but have bought a couple of 'new' drivers and putters since, new bag and reshafted and regripped my irons.

WITB:
irons: Daiwa Advisor DG-273 2-SW
driver: Wood Brothers Australian 10º
3-wood: Taylor Made Tour Preferred Tour Spoon
putter: PING Danser
bag: PING Moonlite II

Daiwa DG-273 irons
IBF won The Open with a set of Daiwa DG-273's 19 years ago (hence the IBF reference at the start of the post). Irons designed by David Graham shortly before he left Daiwa. The 273 is a reference to the score in the 1981 US Open at Merion that he won. I play these irons since '92 and can't think of putting anything else in my bag.

loft lie length
2 20º 57.5º 39.25"
3 23º 58º 38.75"

5-iron:

9-iron:

Driver:
Wood Brothers Australian 10º, 43.5" TT DG X100
From what I have learned about these drivers is that the first one was made for Steve Elkington and this may have been one of his (former) back-up's. The specs are the same as Steve's drivers I've been told by Dave Wood. Several Aussie players, including IBF, David Graham and Wayne Grady, and the Australian primeminister owned an Australian at one time.

3-wood:
Taylor Made Tour Preferred Tour Spoon, TT DG X200

Back-up woods:

From left to right (and - below - from front to back):
WB Australian
WB Texan
MacGregor M85W Tourney Eye-O-Matic
TM Tour Preferred Tour Driver
MacGregor M43T Eye-O-Matic 4-wood
TM Tour Preferred Tour Spoon

Wood Brothers Texan (Prototype) 8º TT DG X100

MacGregor M85W Tourney Eye-O-Matic TT DG X100

TM TP Tour Driver 8.5º Aldila HM-40 firm

Putter(s):

From left to right (all PING): Danser, Rite In 5, MLT, 69 and Pal2 BeCu
Every one of these putters gets some time in the bag from time to time. The Pal2 was my gamer throughout the 90ies. Currently the Danser is in the bag.

Thanks John. Had not seen those Scratch proto's yet. They look interesting. They look a lot like the MacGregor PMB's as many allready mention in that thread.
I think I once read that David Graham modeled these Daiwa's after the irons he had used to win at Merion. He's probably the last person to win a Major using clubs he has designed himself. Unfortunately I can't find any pictures from said victory to confirm the story. The only reference I could find was that DG played a set of Jack Nicklaus Limited Edition irons, but I have no clue what those are. BTW there is a very nice set of DG's personal irons for sale on ebay at the moment. They look like the Mac 985's but with even more muscle high up on the back. They look absolutely smashing.

Awesome! I still have my old TM 4W from that generation, along with a Ping B60 from the same era as well. I had that same Tour Spoon in my bag when I was 13 or 14, but wasn't strong enough to hit it off the deck. Great tee club though.

Loving those irons!

I was a 16 year-old golf equipment addict in 1991, and as I knew someone that worked for Daiwa (and could therefore get discounted gear!) I bought loads of their stuff. I guess nowadays I'd be classed as a 'Daiwa fanboy' They made some great stuff back then, including forged wedges with funky sole grinds. Way ahead of their time!

IBF was my favourite player, I still remember everything that he had in the bag, it's burned into my brain. Some years later, I worked for a golf store that had a pile of dusty, old, unsold Daiwa stuff in back of the stockroom, including Advisor 3 woods with the Metacarbo shaft, just like Finchy had. I stuck one up on the wall of my office, as a piece of art! Sad, I know...

ha ha! Nice story Wayside. Thanks for sharing.
To be honest, I knew nothing about Daiwa back when I bought them. My pro knew I had to get some new irons as my old set was junk and let me play with the 6 iron for a couple of weeks. I liked how it felt and I felt comfortable with the look at address (shape similar to my previous irons and a nice thin topline).
The Dutch Daiwa representative did well that year because all of a sudden it seemed like everyone played the same Daiwa blades.

Lovely classic look to those irons. Can you say looong hosel? With X100s that 2 iron will probably be a real "stinger" in more ways than one hu? Cool stuff

I love that Danser. I have been trying to buy one for a few years now.

I take my old school set out about twice a year and walk 18 holes in the evenings.
Ping Blondies - 1,3,& 4
Tommy Armour - 845's
Ping Rite-In

I figure that the course doesn't know about all the changes in the past 20 years.
It is amazing how much fun it is, but I can't convince others to play a round with all old school clubs.

Great clubs. Still very playable today, and pretty rare. Daiwa never caught on with the public so there can't be that many sets of Advisors out there, even though they are a great design.

I have a Wood Bros. Texan which is a great club and somewhat rare, but the Australian has got to be super rare. Just a wild guess, but I'd say less than 100 were made. Did David Wood shed any light on this?

Any way, great bag of clubs.

@ ChristianLA: :) about the stinger comment. As a matter of fact I had S300 shafts until half a year ago and I like the X200's most in the long irons. I have more 'trouble' addapting to the new shafts in my short irons than in the long irons where in fact they feel like it should. Probably has something to do with the fact that long irons require more of a full hit than shorter irons which rely more on touch/feel.

@ phishstyx: the Danser occasionally pops up on ebay, that's where I found mine for approx US$ 100 including shipping. The ebay.com ones usually get a lot of bids from Japan, but you can also find the from time to time on ebay.co.uk where the price is a lot lower (lest competitive bidding).

@ dalehead: You're right, the dg273's don't pop up too often on ebay or anywhere else on the net. Fortunately I've been able to dig up two spare sets over the past couple of years :) last one cost me < US$ 10 for the 3i - 10i :D

About the Australian I only know that they were special orders only. So there won't be a lot of them around and according to Dave most exclusive Wood Brothers drivers/specials ended up in Japan as there were a lot of collectors in Japan. In the end they even sold the entire WB company to a Japanese company. But no, I have no idea how many 'Australians' there are.

"Borrring" - I used to say the same thing as a young punk a$$ guitar player about the Beatles... As I matured, I learned to appreciate their genius, rather than being intimidated by it.

Not to denigrate the modern engineering marvel of contemporary design, but the older equipment built from organic materials possesses a pure feel, not to mention charm, which have yet to be replicated by more technologically advanced alloys and composites. And yes, I've been playing long enough to draw that distinction. I think golfers of any age may find joy in gaming classic equipment which rewards pure swings and instructs poor ones.

Young golfers- in the service of your appreciation of and enjoyment in the game, if you've never had the experience, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up some sweet vintage gear to play on occasion. You might just get what the old guys are talking about.

Nice bag, btw, and I would love to try that Danser.

Hi Fred,
I have only been out on the course on one weekend this year, but I did manage to hit a couple of balls with the Australian. My swing is a mess though at the moment so i can not yet draw any conclusions from those shots. It's a nice club though, not too heavy not too light. Swingweights around D4-D6. I had trouble getting a high flight with the Australian thusfar, but i think that'll work two or three rounds from now.
I have not yet had the chance to hit the old Texan, but i think getting it up in the air will proove to be even more difficult with the 8* loft vs the 10* loft on the Australian.

I also have an inherited Ping Rite In 5. Thinking about getting it refinished. Ghost, custom paint fill, Iomic grip, and re-milling. Is this a bad decision?

Just so I'm clear... is this your normal gamer bag? If so, that's extremely impressive! I could imagine playing a set like this and getting to a 5 or 6 HDCP and then switching to more modern, more forgiving equipment and having my HDCP imrpove a few more strokes. Kudos to you sir!!

Hail Southern and no place else!!
