I have a question for Titleist driver experts

Upgrade from 975D
My playing partner is getting married in July and I would like to get him and his wife new drivers. His wife is just starting out and only has Cobra irons and 5 wood so I am get her a Cobra driver. That was the easy part. My playing partner however is still using a 975D. He hits it very well but I can't help but imagine how much better he would be if his driver was a little more forgiving and how much longer with the new high COR heads. He is/was a 7, could be a little lower now since he recently shot a couple of mid 70s. I would guess his swing speed is around 105-110 MPH with a smooth tempo. His driving average is around 270-280. His misses are quick duck hooks and blocks to the right. His normal ball flight is very straight but he does like to work a draw when it is needed. This is the part where I need help. I am pretty sure he would not like a 460cc driver coming from a 260cc. So I am thinking of getting a 905T or S. The loft of his 975D is 6.5 which gives him an ideal trajectory, what loft should I get on a current driver? I don't know what the shaft in the 975D is but I do know it is not an after market shaft. It is all black or a very dark gray. So after looking at the archive on Titleist's website I think it is either the Titleist Select or Ultralite 65 in stiff. I have tried looking at current and past ebay auctions for pix of these shafts. The ultralite looks close since it looks dark gray but I cannot find pix of the Select. Does anyone know what the Select looks like? I want to get a driver with a shaft that has similar charateristics. Thanks. :yahoo:

It would be extremely difficult to get him to a launch monitor fitting. He had no interest in getting a new driver. I love the 983K it is my backup and I take it to the range every once in a while to hit it cause it is still the best feeling head IMO. But it is just too difficult to find a new one. Any one here used to play a 975D? What loft was your 975D and what loft do you play with these new drivers?

I'm probably best versed to speak here as I played the 6.5 and it was the best driver I ever had, then my house got broken into and my clubs got stolen.

I went for the 983E 7.5* after that and have never regained the same level as i did with the 6.5 D... SAME SHAFT IN BOTH.

Eevn trying to go back didn't work, the equilibrium was broken and I've never had the same confidence or consistency off the tee

So my advice is nothing's broken therefore buy him a wedge or a putter or you could lose him as a friend :yahoo:

That isn't bad advice. I guess if it any broke why fix it. I just may have to think of something else. Thanks.

I don't know... I played the 975 a long long time ago... went to the 983K, then to 540XD then to the R7 425. I took out the 975 the other day, just because I was fooling around.

It felt like I went back to the stone age. But if he's stuck on it he's stuck on it... get him a gift card... guys love gift cards.

I second the gift card.... Gives him a chance to try a few different drivers and also find a feel for the right shaft.

Ive had a few Titleist Drivers(D,JVS,LFE, and a 905R) and Ill say if he fights the hooks stay away fron T, I found very few sit as square are the 975 series, alittle hooked prone.

I think a 983K sounds good, but 905R may take alittle getting use to but would worth a risk.

For the true Titleist fan, a Bridgestone J33p(375CC and Pearshaped), very similar to the 983K in setup with better feel.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
