Cobra standing down
I have played with my Cobra SS370 for perhaps the last 3 years and couldn’t really have been more satisfied. The only 2 things against it is at 45.75” it can sometimes be a bit unmanageable and club technology has obviously moved on a lot since then.
I am now looking to change (at least try) this for another driver since it is the only thing I haven’t changed in the last year. I tried the TM 425 that would compliment my new R7 3 & 5 woods (which I am really happy with) but found I lost distance from my Cobra.
Any suggestions for my forceful 90mph SS and 12 HC. What I would like is a driver that is as lively off the clubface as the Cobra. I did consider another Cobra, but the F I find too closed and the X is for higher SS’s. Any suggestions please.

Regarding the new Cobra's, I spoke with a rep at a local demo day and discussed the F speed vs. X speed differences. My SS falls into the F Speed range but I also was interested in the more neutral X speed face angle and weighting. The rep told me that I could order any loft X speed head with the stock F speed shaft at no additional upcharge. Cobra also offers a fair selection of popular shafts as custom options so if you've identified a shaft that works well for your swing they may have it. The rep. told me there should be no problem installing any of their shafts in an X speed head, it can easily be played by slower swingers with a shaft that fits them because the only clubhead difference is the internal weighting and face angle. Plenty of good players don't swing 105+ and prefer to play a driver without the slice correcting / draw inducing properties of the F and M series, he told me that he has fitted a number of players with X speed heads that fit that profile. Good luck.

The liveliest faced 460cc driver is meant to be the Callaway FT3, and Ping G5s come with the same shaft length as your Cobra, so you may want to start there. Personally I find shafts that long a mite unweildy.

That said, all new drivers should be restricted to the same COR, and so should have about the same length when struck dead center. The best distance will come from the head and shaft that suits your swing best.

Cheers

I knew the face angles were different between the F speed and X speed, but I didn't know anything about the internal weighting being different. Do you know what the rep meant and what differences they are trying to accomplish with the weighting? I found an X speed driver that I was thinking of buying, but technically the Cobra website indicated I should choose an F speed. I can live with the face angle, no big deal, but I am concerned about the weighting issue. Thanks for any help you could give.

I really don't know specifically what if any the internal weight differences are (how much weight and where exactly it is located between the F and X speed), but the rep. did say to me that in addition to the closed face angle of the F speed it also had some draw weight placement bias. Whether that weight bias is in the heel or just lower than in the X speed I couldn't say. As another thread here mentioned about the Cobra fitting recommendations they're meant to allow consumers who don't go through with a professional fitting to have the best chance at selecting the right model for their game. I think the biggest issue with the X speed for slower swingers is the stock shaft and not the head unless you need slice correction, while Cobra offers a number of different shaft options I've never seen one of their new drivers with anything other than the speed tuned shafts. If you order a new one you can get any head/shaft combination that they offer, but if you buy an X-speed second hand, off the shelf or through EBAY you might be getting a shaft that's too stout for your swing. I'd also add that recommended swing speed ratings are far from absolute, much depends on your swing = if you've got a late release / large lag driver swing you might very well be suited to a shaft with a higher swing speed rating than you actually possess, and conversely a smoother tempo / early release / minimal lag swing might be best suited to a shaft with a slower swing speed rating. Hope that helps a bit.

That does, I appreciate your input. I did find one on ebay with an aftermarket shaft that I was wanting to try. Unfortunately I live several hours from any shop where I can demo clubs, so I kind of have to guess about what might be good and just experiment. Thanks for your help.

You can order any loft in the X series with a variety of shafts. Any loft would be 9 degrees and 9 degress and good luck on the shafts. The may offer them but they don't have them. Do not expect turn around time like Titleist or others for anything custom. They stock only the standard OEM shafts and must order everything else. Anytime I want a custom shaft in their irons or woods I do it myself. 8 weeks on a custom order of Forged CBs with project X only to be told they were still waiting for the shafts to come in. Probably the worst customer service department going today. A good example that Cobra and Titleist have nothing to do with each other.
