New Fairway Wood

Best wood for a high handicap golfer
I have been searching the forums for recommended fairway woods and have noticed that most advice is geared towards the lower handicapper.

I am a high handicapper (24) looking for a new 3 wood and wonder what everyone suggests?

I want a club that is very forgiving and I am not too bothered about distance. I will be using it mostly off the tee. My current club is a 15* Ram ZX Tour which has a taller face than most new fairway woods I have seen but am willing to try something different. The club is quite cheap though and a few years old so I am thinking there must be something out there that can help my game further. I am expecting people to mention the tour edge exotics but they seem very expensive and aimed towards better players.

From the tee the Superfast is killer from the fairway the Cobra Baffler F is fantastic, best of both worlds is a Cleveland Launcher 2009 that you can pick up for less than $100.

Take a look at the Nike SQ Dymo fairways. I have a pair of SQ Sumo2 fairways; these are forgiving, very straight and easy to hit off the deck. I would expect the Dymos to be similar and they are cheap to buy new.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

You may also look into a 4 wood if you think you might want to hit it off the deck.

On top of the other recommendations, you may also look at a G10 and/or G15. And I will second what jerryo said - depending on the situation you may get the same distance out of a 5 wood that you would a 3 wood, and the 5 wood will be much easier to hit off the deck.

I've been switching between two fairway wood setups:

(1) Nike Machspeed 4 wood, (and a Niblick 42° wedge instead of a second wood). The Machspeed is a great fairway metal, but I hook more than I like to admit when I played from the tee box.

(2) Wilson Fybrid 3 wood and 5 wood. The 3 wood is awesome from the tee box (and I sometimes use it as a driver substitute). The 5 wood works well off the deck. These are some of the most under-rated clubs you'll find.

I went out at lunch and tried the Superfast again and was hitting it great off the deck at the GG simulator, now these numbers are jacked up and I just use them for comparison from club to club because there is no way I hit a 3 wood 258 yards, more like 210-220 but I hit the following

Superfast 3 wood 258 high, 250 average stiff shaft, straight, little draw high ball speed was 152
Superfast 5 wood 256 high, 248 average regular shaft but big draws and hooks was 150
Superfast 5 wood 255 highm 245 average stiff shaft, straight, little draw, high ball speed was 151
Cobra 15.5 3 wood 242 high, 240 average stiff shaft, dead straight, high ball speed 144.

So since I play the Cobra looks like I'm going to get the Superfast 5 wood in stifff thru TGW 15% off sale and use the trade-in plus 30% which is a good deal, all free shipping.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Since posting I have been able to look around my local golf shops for some of the clubs you have mentioned. The main contender at the moment is the Taylormade burner fairway woods (2007)

People on here suggested the burner superfast but these are still quite expensive so the 2007 models are a bit more in my price range. I can pick up a 3 & 5 wood for £60 per club! They have rocket graphite shafts if anyone knows if these are any good? I quite like the look of the taylormades and have used taylormade clubs before which I liked.

Has anyone used these or can tell me if they are any good?

Thanks

If its anything like the 07 Burner driver, its good.

Im a mid/high capper as well, and I recently bought a Ping Rapture (v1) 5 wood, brand new for $125. Its 17* so it really is like a 4 wood. Its very easy to hit. Ive seen them used at the local places for under $100 as well.

Go search and look at the Callaway Diablo Edge Tour 3 wood posts in the 15*. Super easy to hit and long. I hate fairway woods but this is one HELLUVA club that's in my bag.

As a fellow high handicapper, I would suggest possibly checking out a 4 wood instead of a 3 wood, if a 3 wood is what you are thinking.

There's quite a bit of discussion about how a 4 wood is easier off the deck than a 3 wood, yet still gets enough distance off the tee.

Just a thought.

Of course this is not relevant if you can really hit 3 woods off the deck pretty easily.

As good as it gets. Very forgiving and very long and easy off the deck. Off the tee just tee it low and watch it go. No need to spend anymore because they broke the mold with these.

Well I think that settles it for me. Some very positive feedback about the taylormade burner series. I am going to get a 3 wood and a 5 wood Stuy Pegleg so the 5 wood should be easier to hit off the deck I hope! I usually hit my two hybrids off the deck though so these taylormades will mostly be used off the tee.
