what does it do?

I was wanting to try out the Callaway x tour wedge, 60 degree 11 vounce with the Phil Mickelson grind. What does the p grind do as far as club playability?

Here's Titleist Explanation:

60P ("Preworn sole design)

- 200 series profile

- Wide, pre-worn sole design (relieved midsole area).

- Plays with more bounce than labeled.

- Well suited to aggressive players, club will not dig.

A "P" grind is going to be different than the "PM" grind. If you search for x-tour wedges there are lots of comments pertaining to PM / MD grind.

I don't really agree with that description of it personally. If you open the club up it plays with more bounce than stated, but when closed since the camber of the sole is completely removed it plays with less bounce. Try a low square faced chip with a special edition p grind on a soft, tight lie and see what happens . . .

That was my thought exactly. There is almost ZERO bounce on that X-Tout PM wedge when it is set up square.

Yes, it will dig, even on little chips it's easy to chunk it when squared up to the ball. A friend even tried blunting the leading edge a little with a grinder and it didn't help quite enough.

As to what I think of hte grind, there's no yes or no to it. If it fits your swing, the shots you need it to play, and the conditons you play in, then yes, if not, then no. :yahoo:

Wedge grinds are VERY personal and should be suited to the individual player.

For me, I like a little heel, toe and trailing edge relief with full bounce in tact on the sole. This allows me to get steep on full swings from the fairway while still allowing hte club to be opened up flat around the greens for flops and pitches. Kind of like the Sonartec T-35 . . . :yahoo:

I picked up the 60 today and off to the short game practice range I went. I gotta say I thougt it was great. I was hitting off bare stuff and rough and for me it performed very well. I could hit little pitches nice and clean and on shots of about 65 yards it was like throwing darts.

Haven't quite figured it out from the sand yet but I only hit a few dozen trap shots.You are right about grinds being personal, for my swing this is the best feeling lob wedge I have hit yet. It knocked the Vokey SM right out of the bag in one day of intense pratice hitting them side by side. Guess that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.....
