Proforce v2 stiff felt whippy in 905R

I was surprised . . .
I took my 905R out for its first round last night. I hit a few bombs, and definitely benefited from the increased forgiveness of the club on a few shots. But what stood out the most for me was how whippy the v2 shaft felt. My original 975D had a Proforce 75 shaft that I put in myself full bore. I then moved to a J with a Vista Pro 80. Although I have moved on to playing more expensive shafts at times, the VP 80 always performed so well for me that I decided to go with it again when I moved to the 983K. I also played a 983E with the original Graf. Blue.

The 983K with the VP 80 had been a staple in my bag and a great performer for me for a long time. I had to try the R though, and I was excited about the V2 75 after having played the Proforce 75 with great results. However, after putting the v2 in play I am shocked at the lack of stiffness from this shaft. I can't believe I am saying this about a a shaft from the proforce family of shafts inserted full bore in a titleist but it felt like a noodle. I know with some of the other stock titleist shafts they have softened them to play truer to flex in the long hosel head. Is this the case with the stock V2? Whether it were the Proforce 75, or either VP 80 I have played over the last 5 years, they have all been aftermarket jobs and have been quite stiff. I like the stiffer flex though and am disappointed feeling that I may already need to get the R re-shafted. Has anyone else had this experience? I am not an X flex player, although I have always played shafts on the stiffer side of stiff.

Anyone have a similar experience with this set up?

I've actually found the V2 to play slightly stiffer than the flex suggests, probably due to the lower torque rating. But you don't feel the torque-effect if you load the shaft in one plane. For instance, if you try to evaluate the shaft stiffness by taking an abrupt linear waggle...the V2 seems to bend more than the old Proforce shafts. Likewise, an aggressive move at the top of the backswing might load the V2 more quickly than the old Proforce shafts. This type of loading happens primarily in one plane, and doesn't apply as much (or any) torque to the shaft.

But I've noticed that, with a smooth tempo, the loading and unloading throughout the swing is more consistent in the V2 than the older shafts, which might be due to it's construction. This gradual loading is applied on different planes, and likewise, torque comes into play. Here, I've found with a relatively smooth tempo, gradually loading the shaft, it is BETTER able to keep up with a fast swing than the older shafts.

Hence, it feels stiffer to me than the old shafts. I've noticed a similar effect with the PX shafts I have in my irons. They respond VERY well to a smooth tempo.

Do you have a quicker tempo, or make an aggressive move at the top of your swing?

Bingo! I very definitely have an aggressive move to the top of my swing. I have had my swing analyzed and that was one of its biggest flaws. While I have tried to work on it, i don't think that is a move in my swing that is going away any time soon. I shoot numbers low enough to keep me satisfied so I guess I might have to find a shaft that better works around one of my swing's flaws rather than try to change my swing too much.

Excellent analysis though, even I had forget that I was told I had an abrupt takeaway. :yahoo:

I have a couple drivers with standard hosels with the V2 75 stiff. It has a 4" parallel section, so I don't think there would be any need to "soften" it. My clubfitter did have to tip mine to get it to play to a stiff flex in the standard hosels (sorry, not sure how much.)

I had an original proforce 65 stiff in a Taylor Made 360 years ago. The butt end felt stiffer, as did the tip section. I would describe the V2 as having more of a "medium" to almost soft butt stiffness, and more of a medium tip. So I think the "feel" of this shaft is quite soft feeling, but it plays true to flex. Really very stable.

I think I am one of three people in the world who did not like this shaft. I tried in both a Hi Bore & an FT-3. In both clubs I could not stand this shaft. It is a very popular shaft right now, but it's not for everyone. I snap hooked my demo's as well. Not for me.

I will definitely not give up on it yet. Nice to hear that I am not the only one of doesn't like the shaft, as everyone else seems to! I will report back after a few more rounds

I also found the V2 76g. to play soft in my 905R. I went to Golfworks and one of the clubfitters siaf they tested a batch of V2's, both R and S flex and they all came out weak. I am like you in that I have a very quick transition at the top and I havn't had the consistency that my last prolite 3.5 S gave me.

Now I might try the Comp nt 65g shaft for control. Hopefully it will not come out too stiff. I find there is a fine line between too stiff and too soft. I'd like the control of a prolite 3.5 with a mid lauch instead of a low lauch. Funny but I can usually tell if a shaft is too weak just by a few waggles.
