Anyone Using Only 13 Clubs?

MattMo

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a 23* G15 hybrid to replace my 22* halo. Now I'm thinking it can also replace my 25* halo as well. I never really found too much difference in my 22 vs. 25* hybrids. My cuurent setup is:

Driver

17* 4 Wood

23* hybrid

5-pw

GW

SW

LW

Putter

Anyone else only using 13 clubs in their bag?

I also use only 13 clubs.

I can choke down on my 3 wood and hit it various distances if for some reason I am out of my 3 iron range and can go for it. Looking at various 5 woods and 2 hybrids but haven't found anything that works for me yet.

Only if the course has long par 3's do I ever think of adding the hybrid to the bag.

I've taken my 4-iron out of the bag for now. I'm using my Founders 5-wood, 21* with rails, for a replacement of the 3- and 4-irons. I just choke down a bit to hit a shorter shot.

I'm looking to add some true hybrids this fall or winter. I just haven't fallen in love with any to this point. And, to be honest, I really haven't looked that hard.

I only use 11 clubs because I carry and my course is very hilly, and hot, and humid. I shot a 70 with this setup a couple weeks ago. I also recently volunteered for a club-pro type tournament a couple months ago where I saw a pro with a torn and tattered Momentus sunday bag. He could not have had more than 10 clubs in that thing because the top was about 6" in diameter. His driver had no headcover and was the Big Bertha 415 from 5 years ago or so. Great player. Here's my setup:

3w
3-hybrid
5i-pw

I don't post often, but this is a subject I experimented with last year and has paid big dividends. I play with only 12 clubs. My hcp has dropped 9 strokes in 1 year. Playing with only 12 clubs has benefited by me twofold:

1) It takes some of the "thinking" out of it. I'm not a long hitter so I'm forced to play more sensible shots.

2) My short game has gotten expotentially better. I'm getting up and down a lot more. Of course, I spend a lot of time practicing this as well.

My set up is as follows:

Titleist 909D Comp driver
Titleist 909 15.5 FW
Titleist 909 21 hybrid
Ping Eye 2 "+ no +" 5-PW
Ping Eye 2 SW & LW
Putter

I am confident over every single club in my bag. I know I have significant gaps in this setup, but I've learned to hit a lot of different shots with that hybrid. I recently shot a "career best" 80 and have reached the low to mid 80's several times this year. I realize that if I want to continue to improve, this set up may need to change but for now, I love it. Great for walking as well!

13 clubs here at the moment

Driver
3W
16° utility club (plays more like 18°)
22° utility
5-PW
AW
SW
Putter

After extensive testing I've found that I don't hit the 4i significantly further than the 5i, and I'm much more likely to mishit it, so its been ousted from the bag. Don't even own a 4i that matches my current set.

I've tried higher lofted utility clubs and didn't like them. Also tried high lofted wedges, in the 58° to 60° range and found I couldn't hit them very well, and the courses I normally play don't seem to fit that type of wedge very well. The courses tend to be closer in design to links style and we hit a lot of bump and run shots on them and low pitches that release to the hole.

So I'm at a loss on what else to put in there. Maybe a club with a hammer head on the end so I can drive the tees into the ground on our sun-baked tee boxes. :)

15.5 3 Wood

60.

I just traded in a hybrid I would hit 150 yards to the right every time. The 3 wood - 3 iron gap has hurt me over the past two weeks. Chocking up and easing off the 3 isn't working at all. I have close to a 30 yard gap off the tee and a 20 yard gap off the deck. I need to fill it ASAP.

I only use 13 but I have thought about adding a higher lofted wedge.

Im wondering if I should add either a 5 wood or a strong 3 wood for those very windy days and keep it for strictly off the tee box...

I have no need for another club, my yardage gaps are where I want them and I don't have to over think my short game shots. I keep an extra driver in my bag room at the club so if I am not getting along with big stick #1 I can change to big stick #2 at the turn. This is a definite advantage of only carrying 13 clubs.

13 here too

Driver, 3W, 3-PW, 53, 58, Putter

As my swing continues to improve i can see a time where the 53 will go away, as between the PW (48°) and 58° most shots into and around the green can be made. More variety in technique vs tools :D

I played my absolute best golf with 12 clubs (driver, 3 wood, 3-P, 54* and putter), and now play 14. I really only need 13, but that one (or maybe two) shot per round where I need my 3 iron is nice at times.
