A little of everything on this putter from what I have learned via DIY
I found the perfect pallet for some different paint fill and metal finishes. The Cameron Laguna. Great large dots to do some translucent fades along with some over-sized lettering that also makes fades turn out nicely. Here is what I did to this Laguna in creating my "Tequilla Sunrise Special"

DIY - Charcoal Mist Finish usning the Caswell 370 SS Blackener
DIY - Honey Dipt Finish on the weights using a Butane Torch :)
DIY - Tequila Sunrise fade paint fill using Tamiya translucent paints

The putter is darker in person than what you see in the direct sunlight. I did happen on an incredible accident that works absolutely unbelievably well in making the paintfill of the "cherry bombs" mirror smooth with no imperfections. Doing a fade right on the dots usually takes multiple times to get them perfect. Many times of doing them, letting them dry only to find one imperfection on one dot and having to redo it. This was the case the last fill when one dot had a small bubble or imperfection on one tiny spot. I touched it with my finger and put a fingerprint on the dot knowing I was going to remove it. I then poured clean acetone over all three dots. It spilled off within a second because I almost dropped the putter. I looked down and unbelievably, all three dots were mirror smooth and PERFECT! The flood of acetone for a second or two and pouring it off, evens them out perfect and leaves a perfect mirror finish on the dot. Only cleanup around the dot is needed where the acetone/paint mixture runs off. Learned a new trick

*Edit* Can't believe I forgot to say this, but...HOLY CRAP that looks amazing. Nice work. *Edit*

Not sure if you'd be offering this as a service at some point, but could you possibly go over your technique in fading the letters so well? It looks amazing. I'm waiting on a Del Mar Button Back and trying to think of what type of fade coloring might make it really pop

Fades are a trial and error thing. Start with your darker color and then proceed with your lighter color. Controlling bleeding is the key.

I have a really good camera, but for the life of me, I can not get a picture that shows how cool the dots are. What looks like glitter is actually the texture from the bead blasting that was originally done on the head. You can even see mill marks through the paint as well. The dots have a lot of depth in person that doesn't really come out in photos. I guess it is kind of like photographing a holographic glare. In person, it is vivid and bright, yet photo it and it is not nearly impressive.

I've tried different methods to do fade fills something similar to these and never can quite get the artistry and beauty your always have. Thanks for inspiring me to buy lots of paint and try over and over to get this right to only give up and end up going with solids. I keep trying with the a-west needle tipped bottles, small drops and letting it bleed and always end up with a mess of weird colored blobs. I wished you'd share a video or something on part of the technique so those of us trying to do it would have some sort of direction. /Sarcasm

Seriuosly though, I've tried and can't get it to work right. You're an inspiration and the putter is, as always, beautiful.

~Ancient Chinese Secret~ LOL ok.gif

I tell most of what I have learned here, but I have to keep some secrets or everyone can do it and it becomes "just another"

Really though, it is easier than you think. THINK your way through it and you will figure out why you are having those issues and HOW you can prevent them. I have spent hundreds of hours of trial and error and most times stumble on ways to get my desired effect. In my initial post, I revealed a method that makes a HUGE difference on filling large areas to make the fill flawless and like glass. I literally stumbled on that last night and now have perfected that technique the "acetone wash"

I am always amazed at your work.

Did you get a copy of the latest Texas Golfer that mentions Stratton as winning the Firecracker Open? If not, let me know and I'll send one down.

deerslayer,

pardon my ignorance, but after seeing this i really want to try this out as it looks exactly like the tour black finish you see on Scotty's website. However, I have never done anything like this. Did you have to strip the finish on the Select before you did the blackening?

i really want to just buy a beat up Studio Select from someone, sand it up and refinish it in this tour black with black and white paintfill. I want to make it "mafia'ed" out.

Deerslayer....another great looking project. I've done the 'bleeding' numerous times and love the way it looks. Some other colors turn out nicely but nothing beats the yellow to red but it also seems like anytime you use red, it gets a little more difficult to make it perfect. For some reason, red always seems to 'take over' any adjoining colors.

I just wish I was braver when it comes to blackener. I haven't tried it yet but would love to darken up some of my stainless putters.

Again...nice job. I always enjoy seeing your DIY projects and they always inspire me to get the paints out again.

Thanks for sharing.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
