Garmin Launches Approach S1, First Golf GPS Watch, With Preloaded Courses

Recommended Posts

I think this is more viable purchase for me. I miss my GPS. It's something I won't have to keep track of or worrying about losing. Plus it gives me the numbers I need. And I'd actually use the thing!

im still really wanting one of these, but just cant stomach $250 for it.

inTheHoleGolf.com has a 15% coupon going on right now. While the coupon can not be applied to the S1 online, if you call them they may very well be able to still save you the 15%… at least they were for me some time back.

Got one. Could not locate satellites. Spent time on phone with Garmin support, we tried several things, none worked. He told me to return it. I exchanged for another S1. It works great. No problems. I love it. Seems there is a bad batch out there, but Garmin will take care of you.

Just make sure you are buying from an authorized dealer.

I have played about 8 rounds with mine (I have always popped it on the charger the night before), some as quick as 3:45, and a couple that were 5+. I always seem to have 50% or so left after a round so I think Garmin's spec of about 8 hours is reasonable.

It is a lithium-ion battery so there is no need to run it down between charges. In fact, you will damage the battery if you repeatedly run it all the way down. As for life… I have an old laptop with the original lithium-ion battery that has just started to fail within the last few weeks… this has been used almost daily for several hours for the last 6+ years.

But yes, you'll need to send it to Garmin to get the battery replaced.

Interesting idea, but IMO worthless in application even if it's inexpensive. Aside from never wearing my watch when playing, if I am going to get only "one" yardage number I'll choose my Bushnell 1600 tournament every time. Least it gives me the choice of aiming at different objects.
I agree. I never wear my watch when playing and I don't know many (if any) that do either.

The S1 gives you front, middle and back of green and not just one yardage. I never wore a watch and have experienced no difficulties adjusting to the S1 watch. I love needing only to glance at my wrist to get yardage and grab the correct club. S1 is very accurate and I often hear my golf partners ask "what does your watch say."

I just ordered one, how do you recharge and is there a need for a car charger?
The watch is supplied with a mains charger & USB charger so shouldn't be a need for a car charger unless you do more than 36 holes a day as mine will manage that.

The charger consists of a clip with pins that sits on contacts on the watch. Very simple system.

I think it is very cool, but the band seems ugly to me. I wish they had made it more like a standard watch where the watch attaches to the band with a spring pin. That is unless the antenna is inside the band and they needed to mould the band to keep it all integrated. Ugly or not, if it doesn't get hundreds of bad reviews on here in the next month (upro for example), it will be on my Christmas wish list.

S1 looks so tempting for the convenience... Hard to justify with my perfectly functional (and free) iphone app though. Any buyer's remorse for those of you who went S1 despite having a perfectly fine GPS? I have a gift card to golfsmith and it's burning a hole in my wallet
No remorse at all and I have golfshot on my iphone. Much quicker and more convenient when playing my home course as I know where hazards and the like are. Still use golfshot when playing new courses in conjunction with the watch - killer combo!

So I love this thing but the last two rounds I've played have been cold (due to an early start) and after about 7 or 8 holes I've noticed a circle/ring of condensation on the inside of the display. Anyone else had this issue?

Reckon it could cause any issues?
Should be fine. When it gets really cold I've had this happen to my g-shocks and it just goes away once it warms up. I might be wrong b/c this watch has gps thought. I wouldn't worry, but I haven't had this problem with mine yet

...just a quick update- still loving my replacement S1 (first one was a "dud" but the one I exchanged it for is working terrific). 3 of my friends have purchased it since seeing mine. I am relieved because they were constantly bugging me to tell them distances. I never use my Golfshot app anymore (latest updated version of Golfshot is buggy anyway).

Golf Galaxy is putting them on sale for Black Friday for $169.

Thanks for the info! I've been wanting one for awhile but have been waiting/searching for one under 200 bucks. Hopefully the Golf Galaxy deal will happen.

You are welcome. I received a mailer from GG a few days ago and the S1 is one of the items listed for the Black Friday sale, so you should be good to go. Not sure if it is "in store" only.

Found a Dick's Sporting Goods ad which has the watch for $169 too. I'm going to get mine there since it's 3 miles away vice 20 miles drive for Golf Galaxy.

I haven't been here in months but wanted to say that I am still as thrilled with my S1 as the day I got it when they first came out. I have about 70 rounds on it and it has operated flawlessly. My Golf Guru 4 with all the bells ans whistles has gathered dust since the day I got the S1. Nice going Garmin.

I purchased 2 of them for my friend and I on black friday and I'll have them next week. Since I'm a watch wearer I'm sure it's going to work out great.
