One of my Managers also lives in Kingwood and his wife appeared in Tin Cup as a gallery extra - an attractive blond.

 

My son once set a high school record on the Island Course at Kingwood - 67 playing with a sprained ankle. I was shocked because I had advised him not to play. That’s why his name is on his golf bag.

 

I used to visit Wood Bros very often and am still a friend of Dave Wood - a great guy!

RobotDoctor this has nothing to do with golf but saw you liked old ballparks. The third oldest ballpark in the country is Bosse Field in Evansville, Indiana. They filmed A League of Their Own at this park. It's a beautiful old ballpark. If you are ever close to Evansville, you should take a look.

Here is one to add to the discussion. Just received it this afternoon. Very nice Texan, WRW insert, older model due to the WB winged logo on the crown. BUT a first for me, it has engraved on the back of the club, just beside the Wood Bros engraving the word WYNNER!

 

 

Perhaps a tour club due to the insert but certainly some sort of promotional club too!

Maybe made for PGA Pro Bob Wynn? Nicknamed "Wynner" He was the pro at the club I grew up on in California for a short time while in between the PGA Tour and getting ready for the Senior Tour. He was a beauty. Won on each tour once. Could flat out F'in play golf (could drink and smoke too!). Old School!

The winged WB logo on the back of Texans was begun to give more brand T V exposure to Tour clubs.

 

Names were also sometimes engraved on the back - I have 2 Texans with Tour players names there, and also a non-pro name on another, installed during a refinishing by Dave Wood.

 

The only other place I've seen is small lettering on the crown for Ian Woosnan.

This is one of the Texan drivers I own, the only one with a graphite shaft. I also have a Texan made for Gene Sauers (no loft designation on the sole plate) and a 10* Texan. Both with S400 shafts.

Not sure if anyone is already doing something like this so let me know if so. Anyone interested in getting together for a couple rounds of persimmon golf? I would like to put together a persimmon event, golf festival with a buy, sell, trade, & show off what you got. 2-4 rounds with competition and camaraderie. What do you all think?

Values on unique Wood Bros items have increased dramatically, due to scarcity, a resurgence in players actually playing Persimmon, and interest in the highest quality late Persimmon era clubs.

 

For example - Premium clubs, such as personal clubs used by major tournament winners, now sell for thousands of dollars.

The Wood Bros Special Texan models called LFF, for comparison to the original MacGregor LFF models, were Dave Wood’s improvements to the MacGregor clubs.

 

Dave felt that, in addition to the 1 3/4” face, added face length, loft increase, and head shaping for swing weight control took the LFF concept to a new level of playability.

 

Only a few were made and distributed to Tour players for testing - Davis Love III for one.

Here is a nice Texan LFF

I had a very expert comment from Tad Moore about this club. Tad said it looked like it had what he calls a “wiped face” grind - where the toe’s face is progressively more open from bottom to top, giving the club an open look at address, even though the insert is square to the aiming line.
