Longbow Golf Course

Hi, I'm playing in my first AJGA tournament out in Arizona at Longbow. Has anyone played it? what is it like? I've never played Desert Golf before is there any difference? not sure where to post this, so mods if in the incorrect spot please move it to the correct thread thanks! :)

i'm playing in my first ajga's this year too. im playing the lockton in KC where i live and the bass pro which is in Springfield Missouri. i haven't played longbow yet and i dont think im gonna play in the ajga there but im going to Arizona for spring break and i'll be playing longbow every day for a week straight... i'l try to remember to PM you after i get back.

I played there in Nov 1999. It was a nice course then, from what I've heard its turned into a really nice course since then. I worked for America West Airlines at the time and my dad and I flew out from Columbus, Oh in the morning rented a car drove there played 18 and drove back to the airport and caught the 7pm flight back to Columbus all in one day.


Didnt pay a dime for the flight the car was like 15 bucks and I can't remember what the 18 holes + cart cost. But it was about the same price as playing here in Columbus.

I played in the event last year and probably will this year, too. Although the course is in amazing shape, I didnt really find it to be an enjoyable experience. The greens are like concrete and any club more than a p-wedge will bounce over the greens. I can remember hitting perfect shots that would land right next to the pin, bounce over the green and into the unplayable desert areas. The fairways are also really narrow with unplayable desert on both sides. some people may disagree with me about this but i am just recalling my experience. hope it helped

Hope I'm not late, but I'm guessing the tournament is the Heather Farr Classic in April?

 

I live here and play Longbow frequently. I like the course a lot, good mix of holes that test all of your shots. Is desert golf different? Not if you stay on the turf... lol.

 

Some local knowledge is good, but for the most part, the course is not too tricky. Longbow is generous off the tee, but most of the trouble lies with the greens. Lots of internal mini contour with tricky breaks. Typically maintained firm and fast. Someone mentioned hitting a "perfect" shot right next to the pin that went off the green. LOL. You don't hit at the flag on firm greens unless you can put some spin on it. The greens are receptive to a well struck shot but can be unforgiving of an indifferent shot. THEY ARE FIRM and you must adjust if you are used to throwing darts onto a soft green.

 

There are a few holes where driver is not advised. There are a few greens where hitting at the (tucked) pin is not advised. The fairway bunkers are deep and to be avoided. The general slope of the property is from east (high) to west (low).
