I purchased my set of Mizuno MX-100s in June of last year for $450 on clearance at Golftown (prior to the release of the current JPX line). I have about a half a season of playing time in with these despite having to cut it short due to a flair-up of tendinitis.

My search for a new set of irons took over a year as I looked at most of the entries in the game improvement category beginning in the spring of 2009. I was primarily looking for a set of irons that would allow me to continue to improve my level of play; forgiving without being too corrective.

With many of the irons I tried, distance and launch were easy to achieve, but it was difficult to get a sense how well you hit the shot which seems to impact me in such a way as to wonder where the shot is going. I was dismayed in the variability in distance that some clubs displayed in my hands which would bring into question what club to pull for a given shot.

If anything, the Mizuno MX-100’s have provided me with accuracy and control. If I put a good swing on the club, I have a high level of confidence in exactly where the shot is going and how far it is going to travel. I can remember marvelling at how tight a circle I was dropping 7 iron shots in the first time I hit these – one after another dropping into a circle with less than a 5 yd. radius. Essentially, the irons were playing for me more like wedges than the previous set of irons I was using at the time (or any others that I had demoed).

In terms of how the MX-100s compare to other models in the GI/SGI categories, they haven’t been doctored up with longer lighter shafts in an effort to gain distance. The clubs play at the more traditional shaft length of a player’s club. The clubs are also noticeably heavier than many of the competitors, but this is off-set by a wonderful balance in your hands. The clubs seem to want to swing themselves. This may be why these are so easy to control. The MX-100s aren’t the longest iron in their class, but they more than make up for that with control and accuracy.

The icing on the cake, so-to-speak, with the MX-100s, is the playability of the hybrids that are integrated in the set. I’ve never had much luck hitting hybrids consistently, until I got a hold of these. Like the irons, the hybrids play at a traditional shaft length and lie angle of an iron. I believe that this really helps in taking the left side out of play. The shorter shafts allow for consistent yardage gaps between all the clubs in the entire set. It doesn’t matter where you have to play these hybrids from; sand, rough or fairway, they just work and are so easy to hit well on a consistent basis. These might be the first hybrids that I’ve tried that really lived up to the name of rescue club.

All-in-all, the Mizuno MX-100s are a wonderful set of game improvement/super game improvement clubs. They offer the mid to high handicap player plenty of forgiveness with enough feedback to help promote sound swing mechanics. I believe they are one of the few sets that offer help now, but will not inhibit improvement due to an overly corrective bias that covers up swing flaws. IMO they are a tremendous value that can still be had on eBay for less than $350 for new clubs.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent
