Shaft "Pureing" or "Spinned"

First off, great site and forums guys, glad I found this place.

I'm going to be getting some new clubs as soon as the Fall lineup's come out (price drops). I'm upgrading from my 845's which have served me well but have been worn out to a set of either Mizuno mp-32's or Titleist 690 cb's. I plan on getting them shafted with Flighted rifles either stiff or x-stiff (will be fit on launch monitor). The Smart-fit on Golfsmith has put me at an x-stiff flex on the flighted rifles, but I question whether my iron SS is high enough for that as I tend to swing easier on irons than I do driver. My driver SS is 110-115, which is a stiff/x-stiff borderline depending on company and feel.

My main question though is whether it would be worth it to have them "Pured" or "Spinned" as well? I understand the theory behind Pureing and it makes sense, but dont know how well the theory translates into performance. Has anyone had any experience with the PURE'd shafts and whether you can tell a marked difference in performance.

I'm a solid scratch handicapper who wants to get the maximum performance out of this set (I dont upgrade equipment often) to try and get my game to the next level (aspirations of Top Amateur/Tour-calibur).

Any help would be appreciated, be it from fellow low handicappers or anyone knowledgeable in the area. If there is another shaft out there that I should be taking a look at as well, let me know as well. I'm still a little while off from purchasing, so just doing my homework, demoing (hard for lefty's) and research at this point. Thanks in advance. :idhitit:

The first thing you would need to do is find a reputable clubmaker in your area. If you don't have one in your area, then give Joe K. a call. It might not be a bad idea to get 1 or 2 clubs done and see if you notice a difference. There is no OEM that I know that blue prints irons from the factory.

I am a believer in that there is a "spine" on every shaft whether it be steel or graphite. The clubmaker in my area has the equipment for finding the spine on any shaft. I have used the machine myself and can tell you that it is ABSOLUTELY noticeable where the spine is on a shaft.

However, what I cannot tell you is whether or not spineing your shafts makes any difference in playability. The prior shaft in my R510 was the Rapport ProWound70 S-flex. I bombed this club with a 280 carry and 20-30 yards of roll depending on how firm the fairways were. It was not spined when it was put in. 2 months ago the baggage monkeys at United broke the shaft on the driver at the hosel. I had the shaft replaced with the exact same one but this time it was spined by my clubmaker.

I keep track of my fairways hit with GameTracker on thegolfchannel.com, and since my spined reshaft, my % of fairways hit have not changed to any significant degree. I still hit the ball just as far, but I also still hit the same # fairways per round. The club doesn't feel any better on solid hits and doesn't feel any worse on mis-hits. If there was supposed to be some placebo effect for knowing that your driver was "spined", I failed that test :vava:

I know that spining or puring your shaft is meant to help your game and consistency levels but i just cant bring myself to put a shaft in at a dodgy angle. It makes the club look all messed up! Shafts in graphics up at 12 o clock for me.

Definitely puring. I started puring all of my clubs since the late '90. Kudo on the graphics but I'd rather be hitting the fairways, greens and close to the pin and having the logo in the "good looking" position. Club fitting is the way to go. Go to California Golf Technologies for articles on club fitting.

THe questions you've asked is just a way to build the club as consistent as possible every single one of them in your bag.

Basically making every club in your bag is your favorite club.

It may only save you 1-2 strokes a round but for most touring pro that is a lot of strokes to safe and make more money at the end and might even win a tournament.

IMO, THe better the player is, the more they can feel the result of these process.

After all is all up your head whether you trust your club or not when it come to making the shot. If your club are on the spot, i'm sure this will help your confident to trust the club.

Here is the latest Quote from a Nation Wide and Canadian tour player that just try it on one practise round only:

Hey Joe,

just wanted to let you know that the clubs are great, I can really tell the

difference, mostly in feel. The ball is going where I want, most of the

time. Sometimes I feel like it's going to hook more, but it stays

straighter, maybe it's me, maybe it's the clubs, not too sure, but they feel

great. Also, the three wood is money. Hitting it a little higher and still

straight, just like I wanted. Anyhow, I've dropped your name a few times,

some guys on the putting green, players and reps were jocking my putter, and

the line you put on it. Thought you should know. Thanks Joe.

TJ

He end up shooting 60 on one of the 4 rounds at Canadian tour, bogey the 18th thinking what he has to say on camera if he shoot 59. Forgive him for being the first year as a pro! ;) (cool) ;)

And he start making more cut and putting better number on his score card.

Hope that help!

Joe
