No seriously, just off 290 is Houston National Golf Course. It's probably one of the more scenic courses around and pretty challenging.

Just shows that different folks like different things in a golf course. I can't stand HNGC.

i actually like how it's such a difficult course....however, after they changed ownership, that place went bigtime downhill.... :cheesy:

My 18 year old cousin spent the entire summer working with maintenance crew. He was cutting tee boxes his first day with no experience. It took him a month to work up to greens. :cheesy:

My office will be in the NorthWest part of the city.

It is just off of US 290 maybe a mile past Beltway 8 on the way out of the city. I hope that makes sense...I'm not at all used to the roads. I will likely either be living somewhere in that direction or uptown near the galleria.

.......................

hi - jumping into the houston scene here.

i live in Mo. City - straigth 25 miles due south of houston.

i live & play in sienna - quite a drive from the NW side.

nicely set-up course

we have our greens problem down here -

when its "on" it is very nice but when not - not so good.

As mentioned - MUST think about your commute!!

just like Chicago area (visited there last month)

got stuck in traffic for over 1 hr coming from the airport headed straight to a muni nearby

if you decide to live in the Galleria area = OK since you are going against the flow.

agree with above notes about blackhorse GC - nice course. lots of trees.

Houston national is a bit crazy place - wide open links style course.

if you catch it on a windy day - forget about it.

there are others courses nearby as well. in the Spring-Cypress area.

Memorial public course is quite busy & play slow

take a number!!! and bring a steak.

someone mentioned SweetWater CC - it was taken over by the Palmer group.

- still with open membership?? i think. i had an invite for 5K or something to join.

- its a decent course

with the like of Tour 18 (houston) - 10 minutes from IAH airport

Cypresswood (near airport) , Bear creek (west side) & Southwyck (southeast).

these latter courses can be played for a song & get on their e-mail list.

many of the publice & semi-public courses have website & e-mail special programs.

just an idea for you so that you get to know the area & courses.

with our topography, we don't have much of any elevation to speak of...

most of the southern courses are at or below sea level (like mine)

i think it is all about how well the course get drained after a heavy downpour & repeats.

best to you.

ps: play early!!

That's unfortunate that community showed lots of promise (HNGC). Cypresswood is a great course. During the summer of my freshman year in college (1997), I worked as a laborer helping put in drainage basins, lay sod, spread pine straw, and got to assist the green contourist in shooting elevations. I have yet to play it, for some reason it's always closed. I completely forgot about Cypresswood. Great course.

I joined Blackhorse a couple months ago. $175 down and $310/month gets you unlimited play with cart and range balls. Can't beat it, IMO.

anyone interested playing there next tuesday? glynn? drew? kiran? rick? todd? (bring your putter)

I can, it will have to be around 10 or 11, gotta be leave for class by 3:00, gosh I love grad school! :cheesy:

I won't be in town yet, but as soon as I'm there I will always be up for a game. I might even contact some of you if I come into town in the next couple of weeks to look around and see if you want to join me for a round or two.

That's pretty good for 2 full courses. Fish Creek is $175 down & $275 a month I think for 27 holes. They do a 12-month discount though which gets it down to $215 or so if you pay up front.

Is it just me, or is Tony's WITB getting longer? If he keeps his current pace up, he should find a way to have real-time updates.
