Redstone Golf Club opens TaylorMade Performance Lab

Getting fit for a new set of golf clubs isn't rocket science, but it may be getting close if the new TaylorMade Performance Lab at Redstone Golf Club is any indication. Just before the Shell Houston Open, Redstone opened the first TaylorMade Performance Lab in Texas. One of 11 around the world, it's located in the clubhouse of the Member Course, but open to daily-fee golfers as well as members for fittings. The lab, which costs $150,000, really does look like a laboratory. Outside the lab is a giant vault door...

What really separates the TaylorMade fitting system from other manufacturers is the level of sophistication. Not only can a clubfitter monitor the launch angle, spin rate, path, clubhead speed and ball speed, he can also see exactly what the body is doing through a swing analysis. Using 34 reflective sensors placed on the body and the club, the system creates a 3-D model, which can be replayed at various angles. The pictures show exactly how the golfer swings a club and where all the body parts line up. This enables the clubfitter or instructor to make slight modifications to produce a better swinging motion before recommending the specs on a set of clubs...

Like most good clubfitting sessions, the TaylorMade process starts with an interview and an evaluation of the golfer's current set. That's followed by a few swings with a 6-iron after Fuh outfits the player with reflectors head to toe. The club also has sensors. Using six high-speed cameras, data is collected and reformed into an avatar by the computer software. The process is repeated with other clubs, and through the computer and Fuh's expertise, recommendations are made for the model clubs, shaft specifications, lie angles and lofts.

Once the indoor part of the process is completed, Fuh takes the player outsdoors to the grass range and uses a portable launch monitor to complement what he sees on the range...

The entire experience, from inside the lab to outside to giving the customer a folder with a CD, takes about two hours...

Customers don't have to purchase TaylorMade clubs to arrange a fitting ... a golfer can take the specs from a clubfitting and apply to them any manufacturer's clubs...

Been there myself and it was a nice experience, Edwin even talked me into a new R11.

Received an email from them to come out and take a look around, and if I was to join, they would hook me up with a fitting, and the R11 line of drivers, woods, and irons, with their wedges and bag .Value was something like $2500.. Not bad, I guess they are looking for members again and trying to sweeten the pot.

pretty much retail rate plus like $300 for fitting
