I played in a tourney with a couple of guys who have played the events. Said it's a pretty decent deal. Get to play some courses that they otherwise wouldn't for a "reasonable" price. Also mentioned they get some SWAG (shirts, etc) that make it good. That combined with getting to play competitive golf sounds enticing to me.

I play on the Houston Tour. I enjoy it. The entry fees are roughly $120 per tournament. You get to play some nice courses. Competition is good. Each tournament has two side games. A closest to the pin on par 3s and a skins game. Entry is $10 each. Pots can get juicy depending on how many people enter. Top two winners in each flight get a trophy. Top 3 get a Golf Galaxy gift card. I think 1st gets $100 or $125, second is like $75, 3rd is like $50.

It's a lot of fun, it forces you to learn the rules and see what your "real" scores are.

Monty,

Tons of fun for any handicap. There's a Flight (handicap class) for all skill levels. Theres people who can shoot par, all the way to people who shoot in the 120s. I have seen them all. Even women are welcome. The higher handicap classes usually play from around 6100-6200 yards or so. So you don't have to be a bomber at all. My drives are only like 215 yards MAX. And I can still compete with 250+yard bombers cause I can chip and putt while they hack their 280 yard drives out of the woods and I get to write them down for a 14 on a par 4. LOL Its all good. : )

Winnings are not based on how many people enter the tournament?

Winning as far as the Skins games is based upon how many people put their money in the pot (its optional) and how many people win a Skin. You can win as little as a couple bucks, up to around $1,000 in big tournaments.

As far as gift card prizes and such, it's pretty standard for each flight. $125 for 1st, $75 for 2nd, $50 for 3rd. The Golf Channel Am Tour is more about bragging rights and having fun than playing for money and prizes.

Any amateur tournament is more about bragging rights than it is about winnings. I just find it odd that regardless if 5 people or 50 people play in your flight, you still only walk out with $125. That's good for only 5, but for much more than that, and it just seems silly. Basically, the director is making a killing off of the players.

I've played om the AmTour for 4 years, and it has been a great experience. The events are well run, and are fun for every handicap level - my personal observation is that the higher handicaps seem to enjoy it at least as much as anyone, because they have rarely had a chance to play "real" competitive golf. I have also found that playing competitive golf has helped improve my game significantly - knowing that every stroke counts for something really helps improve your focus.

It's all about having fun and a little bragging rights, not at all about trying to make money. I would still play in it even it there was no prizes and $0 handed out. If anyone is interested in playing in it in hopes of making cash and will be upset about only receiving $125 gift card, skip it. Go to the casino instead.

On top of that you get you play by USGA rules against people of your own skill level and work on your game and try to lower your handicap in hopes of moving up the ranks and making it to Nationals where you play at TPC Sawgrass and other great courses against people form across the US in hope of becoming National Champion. Where else can you do that? You can't.
