DFW Golf Courses

I know there was a thread a while back about this. And when I say a while back I mean a couple of years. I wanted to get a new thread started up about some of your favorite courses around the DFW area and how you rate them.

I haven't lived here long but here's a list

Tour 18 - Worth the trip. When I played the greens were ok. The houses on the way in are stunning

Cowboys - Wow, they really make you feel special here. Great course and highly recommended

Tribute - I personally thought it was fantastic. Some people think it's overrated

Westridge (McKinney) Liked it quite a bit

Riverside (Grand Prairie) Some very good scoring holes and the greens were in great shape

Trails of Friscoe - Pretty good. I wouldn't be dying to make a return trip

Coyote Ridge - Good but not fantastic. The back was much harder than the front

Cedar Crest - Good layout. TERRIBLE neighborhood. Can get crowded but not bad

Country View (Lancaster) Ok layout...They allow 5somes which is a joke. Wont be back

Firewheel (Lakes Course) Had fun and would go back

Turtle Hill (Muenster) Very fun track. If you are ever north go play it

Chickasaw Pointe (near Durant, OK) Very nice course. Will be back plenty

Tierre Verde - Great course...One of the better ones IMO

Texas Star - Most people know this one. Its great

Bear Creek (west course) Good course. Lots of loud planes and can be very crowded

Oak Hollow (Mckinney) very crowded muni but pretty darn fun to play

I will post more when I think of them but please add some more!!!!!

Would Add in no particular order

TPC Craig Ranch (McKinney) Super nice bent grass greens. Been fortunate to play there 3 times and look forward to another opportunity.

Firewheel Bridges - Also bent grass greens and could be real nice if people would learn to fix a ball mark or 3.

Woodbridge Golf Club (Wylie) - quick greens and a tough track. May have the most friendly staff of any I've played in the area

Gentle Creek (Prosper) - Only played a scramble but would be fun to play again.

Twin Creeks (Allen) - Nice course if you can get a deal on the rate. They probably sell more discounted memberships than any course in the area so it can get pretty crowded.

Twin Wells (Irving) - Bring your nose plugs. Pretty cheap if you can stand the smell

Waterview (Rowlett) - I've always found it to be in good condition.

Sherrill Park Course #1 & #2 - Could be the best golf for the money in this area. Easy to walk also.

Indian Creek (Creek course) - Priced a bit steep but greens are fast and tricky.

Good write up. Not a fan of Bear Creek (either course). Crowded, planes are annoying, generally don't like the layout.

Texas Star is one of the best layouts with good course condition. The bent grass greens can look a little beat up sometimes since they water them a lot and they are soft and people don't fix their pitch marks.

Frisco Lakes is probably the best course in Frisco, way better condition than Trails of Frisco (not maintained) and less houses than Plantation (which is still a good course and my home course). Westridge is also a really fun course in the area, the front 9 is really easy and the back always eats my lunch.

Good assessment mr75204.

My favorites from your list are Tour 18 and Cedar Crest. I fully expected to hate Tour 18, but ended up liking it and play it pretty regularly now. You took the words right out of my mouth about Cedar Crest. The only place I would disagree a bit from your list would be Bear Creek. I couldn't think of anything good to say there, so I will take my mother's advice and not say anything at all.

I played The Golf Club at Frisco Lakes this past weekend, and I have got to tell you guys that it may be in the best shape of any course in the Dallas area right now. I couldn't get over how plush their fairways and greens were. Green fees on the weekend can get a little steep, but they do run several specials. Great course, great shape.

+1 Fossil Creek> Very challenging and fun to play.

Tour 18> Fairways are starting to get very thin due to lack of rain. But other than that, I do like this course.

Glad to hear, I tried to make it out to Frisco Lakes this weekend but was too busy. I get an email each week with specials. I think it's been 35 bucks after 1 PM on the weekends lately and 24 or 28 after 3 PM etc. Definitely a good deal if you don't mind playing in the afternoon heat.

How would you rate Los Rios in plano ? I always see it but never play there due to I always play Bear creek. The west course is in great shape right, now and you can get good rate at golfnow.

I used to belong to Los Rios and they've had a couple ownership changes, and done some changes to the course. Wouldn't say it's worth a very long drive to play.

Drive about 10 more miles and play Woodbridge in Wylie. Played there yesterday morning. Greens are super quick right now and fairways are in great shape considering the lack of rain. They always have specials going too.

Don't like to bash golf courses, but the last time I was out at Los Rios it was horrible (about two months ago). They had some sort of fungus eating away at their greens which they claimed migrated from the neighboring Pecan Hollow course. They set up some temporary greens on some holes (read: fairway mowed down slightly shorter) which was disappointing.

The course would be decent if they maintained it better. Like the previous poster above me stated, it's gone through a few different ownership changes which probably contributes to the lack of attention. My advice would be to spend a few more bucks and play a better/different course.
