Need a club for handicap (AZHN)

I'd like to finally get around to setting up an official handicap, but I'm not a member at a private club or a part of any men's clubs at a public course. Any suggestions? I forget what the number is, but there's a certain number of rounds I'd need to file with another member of the club each year, and none of my buddies are interested in getting a handicap. If there are some guys here that a part of a club that I could play with a few times a year, I'd be interested in that. Thanks

What part of town are you located? I have my handicap through ahwatukee cc, even though I'm no longer a member. Ahwatukee's mens club isnt very active, but its SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPER cheap to join. I think its $40/year including your AZHN.

Yeah, I'd give them a call and they can put you in touch with the right people. Another one to think about would be the Shalimar Mens club(shaligusta!!!!!) Only $35/year with a USGA handicap included.

a little more info for you

I believe any course with a mens club will let you establish a handicap with them for a nominal fee, 5 years ago dobson ranch was $25/yr , could be more now

There is no need for any of that anymore...you can go to azgolf.org and pick any course or club in town....you really don't have to be a member. I was doing Ocotillo before and just did Golfhub so I could play in their events from time to time. The price is fixed for the AGA HC by the place you select..

I was looking at that, too. The Stonecreek men's cub would be convenient.

Am I correct that you have to play and file a minimum number of rounds per year with another player from whatever men's club you're a part of?

While that is what is stated...I have never seen it enforced!

Most everyone I have ever know enters their scores at the course after the round or on the Internet. Or if you play in an event the tournament staff enters the score for you.

So, by what is written you would....but you could play your rounds with someone and have them sign a card with name and phone#, submit your scores at the course...get your HC and if anyone ever challenged you would have the original scorecards.

Like I said...I have never seen it challenged. BTW, there is not even an option in the AGA system to include WHO you played with like there is in the GHIN system.

That's what I was wondering about - I guess if it's never enforced then I won't sweat it too much. I'd like to start playing in local am events for fun next year and just didn't want any issues. So I don't automatically get a GHIN with an AGA handicap?

Thanks for clearing all this up for me

No GHIN...AGA is weird like that....

Sucks too...because I just moved back from Oregon...where they did use GHIN. So I paid over there for that one. I get back here and it is not accepted. SO I have to pay for an AGA HC here.....I lose all my scores(no transfer) and have to enter them manually now in AGA.

If you want to play in some events, I would consider the GolfHub premier Club.....Get a HC through them. They play events every month and pay net and gross. The skins at the events are good money..better than winning!

Look up ASGA, Arizona Sunset Golf Assc. I am a member of this golf group, $60.00 a year for dues and AZ handicap. They hold a tourney every month at a nice course... skins, Gross, net, flighted. Good group, great time. I think they are at 7 canyons this month...

Good to know - So do you also still keep your handicap in Oregon so you have a GHIN? Or is that not allowed?

That GolfHub Premier club actually loks pretty good. Looks like they get near capacity on their 80-man events. I'm definitely leaning toward that.

Not sure if I should join now or wait until New Year's. They require you to play in three events each year, but I can't make it to three more this calendar year due to school and such. Either way, thanks for the head's up on that.

P.S. My avatar is the 18th hole at Gearhart Golf Links in OR. Ever play there?

That 3 event thing is if you start at the beginning....I just joined like I said.....I won't get 3 events in. Next one is at Dino Mtn....so you should consider it. I gotta pull out cuz of my injury.

Never played Gearhart...Pumpkin, Reserve and Langdon were my places with a sprinkling of Chehalem and OGA.

I am sure I will be back there soon...so will make it a point to try and hit the course.

GHIN is just a service, authorized by the USGA to manage and report handicaps. Most state golf associations use GHIN. The Arizona Golf Assn, does it in-house (authorized by USGA of course).

As for playing with other members, I think that is what the USGA expects as part of their definition of a "club" and when granting an affiliation to a "club." The idea being members of a club actually play together and therefore can be subject to peer review. But once you join a club, there is not typically any requirement to play with other members or submit scores attested by other members.

Yeah, I had an email conversation with the guy running the Golfhub club and he said it's really not enforced.

Even though I've golfed for 20 years, I'm new to the world of official handicaps and amateur events and I wasn't sure how big of a deal that rule was and whether or not it was enforced. Just didn't want any issues going forward as I look to start playing in events.
