Wanted to give one of my favorite public courses in Ohio some love on here.

Darby Creek in Marysville is not only the best deal in the columbus area, but one of my favorite courses. With the front 9 being a links style, and the back nine diving into the woods behind, every time you play it you learn a little more about it.

If you played Callaway you would enjoy it more.

Just played Kirtland for the 2nd time in 4 years and it blew my mind. Top 3 in Ohio. Looking forward to Camargo and the new Inverness. Kirtand has it all, tilt, fairway cant, exceptional bunker placement, variety. Could be a 9 with additional tree removal.

Best of luck trying to get onto Camargo! If you have an IN, i'm jealous. I live right down the street from the course, and get sick every time I see it, knowing I may never get to play it.

Access isn't a problem, I don't like their nose. My mother has played the track in a tourney. My hunch is that it is vastly overrated as a close friend qualified for the US AM out of there and said so. We align very close in Architecture. I see myself only playing it once, I don't like joints like that.

Canton Brookside and Kirtland are vastly underrated and it's criminal but great at the same time.

Moss Creek just went up for Sheriff's auction in North Dayton. Such a shame.. amazing layout that is just on the wrong side of town :(

I can't imagine how hard it must be to sell one of those homes on the course at anywhere close to a decent return. It was already a tough sell being in that area/school district, but now they aren't even on an active course.

I was really looking forward to Fowlers Mill last Sunday. I played it and it's in my top 5 worst courses played. So pissed I didn't play Sleepy Hollow (Cleveland one). Fowlers was one sick joke of a course. It's hard to put into words how bad it was.

Why do you say that? I played there a week and a half ago and it was great. Sure, It's definitely a tough test but I wouldn't deem any of the holes unfair except maybe 17 with a back pin. Conditions were good as well.

I agree. Thought Fowler’s Mill was great. Tough yes, but a really great course. In fact, of the three we played (Little Mountain, Sleepy Hollow, Fowler’s Mill), I thought Fowler’s Mill was the best of the three. And by far my worst score of the three. Always cool to read different opinions though.

The guys I golf with speak very highly of the painter they use. I believe he's in the Anderson/Withamsville area. I can get his info if you don't find anyone closer.

Thanks. Doubt they would drive this far though, Im up in Fairfield area. I will reach out if I cant locate anyone closer though. Thanks again.

Unrelated to painting. I hate golf. Took yesterday off to play with brothers in law before watching my nephew play for his high school. Was even par after 17. Best round ever. On 18, piped a drive, had 116 to pin, hit wedge. Ball spun back to fringe (ugh) and had uphill 20ft left to right break for bird. Stroked the putt - ball sounded and felt weird coming off the face - went way right about 10ft only. Looked down, ball had been in a depression in fringe. Shame on me for not inspecting it closer. So had uphill 10ft to save par and shoot par for round. Lipped out and was 3" from cup. Bogey. 73. Best round ever by me - but one that should have ended in straight up par. Hit the ball so well yesterday. Frustrating.

Played last Friday with Luke at Hamilton Elks - shot an 81 I think. Im so inconsistent.

So it looks like I'm moving to NW Ohio. Can you help paint a picture for me, is golf as bleak as I am imagining during Nov-Mar? I have the impression that I pretty much will not be able to play at all during that time.

That is correct. I've played golf in every month in northern OH over the years, so the weather does break occasionally. But more often than not, courses are closed from mid November through March. You can expect to get 1-2 rounds in during that window, the ground will be soaked and it will be 41 degrees when you play. On the bright side, 41 will feel pretty warm.

Well, I'm extremely jealous that you played Sleepy Hollow for a friend speaks very highly of it's bones.

Fowlers Mill (played from tips). It's like a bad dream, but worse

River

#1- 20 yard wide fairway with woods on the left, creek crosses and goes along the left side, okay lots of strategy

#2- Have a chute to hit through and trees all over, whats the point of greenside bunkers?

#3- A complete joke, creek through the middle of divided fairway, got to duck hook or block fade to hit the fairway.

#4- Needs tree removal, after the first 3 holes this was somewhat sane

#5- double dog leg with one person's ball in farthest right side of fairway and he had to hit duck hook to get on the green

#6- Is it over yet?

#8- boomrang par 3 (copy of UofM 6 and 14),

#9- The tee box is right in front of a woodlot of trees, Seriously you had to hit a fade or slice to get it into the fairway.

Close to house and the restroom to throw up

Lake

#1- Long par 4, had 220y into an uphill green with 2 center-line bunkers, are you serious? There are hardly any run ups to any of the greens

#2- please let me go in!

#6- I think this is the hard leg to the right, awful hole, a joke.

#7- Cool volcano hole

#8- Was Pete on Acid? The worst hole I've ever played

#9- Pete copying himself like he does, another creek divider down the middle

Lastly, which has nothing to do with how bad the course was, does anyone find it troubling that City or Metroparks course charges $70 to walk on a weekend? I know many privately owned public courses that are vastly better charging much less to walk.

I guess I understand your frustration with the design, We can just agree to disagree there. To address your second point, Fowler's Mill isn't owned by the City or Metroparks, it is a privately owned public course. It is definitely pricey but for that you get (in my opinion) a really nice layout and the best public course conditions in the Cleveland area.

I have to also agree to disagree about the design. It's not a course that one can just pull driver and expect to find the fairway all the way around. There is strategy involved and it's very much about being in the right spot to attack. My group played it for the first time this year and I want to go back. I think prior knowledge is key here. I'm very much a fan of the choices that need to be made.

The conditions were fantastic. The people on staff were welcoming. IMO, worth the money. Well, the GolfNow deal certainly helped (cool).

I'll be staying in Toledo this weekend for the Michigan game in Ann Arbor. I'm looking for a suggestion to play Saturday morning before the game. I already have a t-time set up Friday afternoon at the Quarry Club in Canton. That's my on the way round.

A few places...tons of Arthur Hills designs. I played The Virtues Club in July and enjoyed it.

Stone Ridge - seems to held in very high regard

Ottawa Park - my hotel is 10 minutes away and the history is awesome. Is the quirkiness worth it?

Maumee Bay State Park - Seems like the most interesting course

Eagle's Landing - right next to Maumee, looks like a pretty sweet layout

Heather Downs - Seems like a very traditional course, also near my hotel

Home Courses
- Country Club of Scranton
- Seven Oaks GC at Colgate University

Yes it’s that bad. March is sometimes playable. Sometimes it’s too wet however. You’ll likely get a couple rounds in in March but they will be winter rules. April is when golf season starts ramping up. Although I believe this year, in Columbus at least, most of April was completely rained out. I know my buddy was bitching that his golf season basically didn’t start until Memorial Day because it rained almost every weekend.

And this is a big reason why I moved to Phoenix.

Driver: PXG 0311 Gen 4 9*

Putter: Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport 2.5

I worked at Stone Ridge for one summer when I was in college.

Solid course even though I don't tend to like courses that run through neighborhoods.

Sorry, not much experience with the others.
