Best irons ever made?

Well, I wont venture to say what were the "best" irons of all time, but I can give my favourites in multiple categories:

Blade: Titleist 681, had some great weight to them, nice low ballflight, and some of the softest feeling blades i've ever hit. FWIW these are my favourite irons of all time in any category.

^^^ These. What also set them apart was the wooden dowel in the hosel to greatly reduce vibration and the constant offset on all of the irons. Such a shame that they were never tested for conforming grooves. It is the only reason I stopped using them since I couldn't use them in competitions.

Another aspect to them is that the differential in mass between #3 & a PW is about half as much as most standard clubs. 28 grams on mine, where most sets are 48-55. Only set that is close is G.N. Signatures at 32 grams. Find this offers a high level of consistency that makes going up & down bag easier. Love them both for it.

PS shout out to 99 Hogan's, incredibily intuitive clubs.

Surely by definition of technology, the best irons are the current model from their new range.

The new tech creates flyers much more often IMO.

G400 Max 9* Ventus Red 5X, SIM Ventus Red 6X

Callaway Mavrik 4 (18*) - AW (46*) Project X 5.5

Vokey SM4 50* SM5 56*

What do you think? I've played over a dozen irons and I think the Wilson Staff 45 are the best irons EVER. Of course this is just opinion, but I was interested in others' opinions on this.

Honorable mention to MacGregor V-Foil 1025 and Ping Eye2.

Are you asking what are the best irons ever, if they were played side by side today? Or the best irons compared to the other irons if their era? Like many will say Ping Eye2's were great, but if you had to play a round of golf today for a chance to win $1M would you play Ping Eye2's? I'm guessing not.

Cobra Radspeed 10.5
Cobra LTDX 3W 16 deg
Cobra F9 3Hy & 4Hy
Cobra Forged Tec 5-PW Nippon Modus 105S
Cobra MIM Tour 51 deg
Taylor Made Milled Grind3 - 56

Odyssey Triple Track 2-Ball Putter

One of the VERY few advantages of growing old is some perspective on topics like this.

Of course, all of us are subjective about the clubs WE use, and what is the best set of irons for me is NOT the best set of irons for you.

That said, in the history of irons, there has never, EVER, been a phenomenon like the Ping Eye2's. For a ten year period from the mid-80's to the mid-90's, if you played golf on any Saturday morning at any club in America where serious golf was played, it was more likely that all four players in a foursome would have Eye2's in their bags than that none would; they were that dominant. And I'd wager that there are more sets still in use today than all other clubs of that vintage combined, and by a lot. The only comparable thing that I can think of is the Great Big Bertha for a couple of years, but even that pales in comparison to the Eye2 prevalence and none are still in use. A set of Eye2's still brings a decent price; an old GBB sell for next to nothing.

Of course technology has marched on since then, though it perhaps marches more slowly with irons than other pieces of golf equipment. The i5's were better than the eye2's, and the i20's were better than the i5's. But for sheer marketplace dominance, we've never seen, and won't see again, anything remotely close to the Ping Eye2.

The Eye2 irons have to be up there in the entire history of golf irons. They are still widely played today. That--along with the Anser putter--is why I would put Karsten Solheim up with the greatest golf designers and club makers. Simply the highest echelon.

Agreed. Putting aside changes in materials for golf clubs and golf balls, and focusing only on design, there are a handful of equipment innovations that standout as turning points in golf history. Sarazen inventing the modern sand wedge, the Big Bertha woods, and then the two Karsten developments; perimeter weighted, cavity back irons and the Anser putter. The percentage of clubs in use today that are derivatives of those four is astounding, and Karsten figured out two of them. Remarkable.

Forgot to mention the Macgregor PCB Tours are the best looking irons! Feel is pretty good as well. Of course

the fact they are forged by Miura doesn't hurt.

I still have a nearly mint set of PCB Tours and 1025Ms. The only two iron sets I’ve refused to sell or trade, along with my 983E driver and Sonartec 3W.

My first set of blades were the MP-32 & still my sentimental favorite. Beautiful irons!!! My current MP-18's pretty damn sweet too though.
