Best Used Iron set for beginners under $200

Recommended Posts

My brother's birthday is coming up and he is brand new to golf but wants to start playing since our dad and I play a decent amount. Was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on a decent (very forgiving) used set for under $200 (irons only, no putter or driver). BTW my brother is 19 very strong and has never taken lessons (which he will be doing) so this is the very beginning for him.

Any reviews on these clubs:

Also was looking at these Powerbilt irons at my local shop (massive cavity back and and had orange and black coloration). Any thoughts or opinions would be very much appreciated.

thanks

There must be better stuff <200. You can get current stock for +/-$500 these days. Have you looked through the BST on here? Or even, I hate to say it, ebay? I know we're selling Cleveland TA7 sets at work brand new for 299, so I'm sure there is similar stuff (and probably more forgiving) under that hanging around.

Look for an old set of Ben Hogan BH-5's. Great irons.

Go to Global Golf.com. There are inumerable sets of irons for under $200.00. I have dealt with them for a long time. Good service, fast, no problems on returns. If you want something good, that will last, look at the Pings Eye2s and Eye2+ for about $150.00. Eye3s, I5s right on up to I15s for about $450.00. Tielist, Nike, TM, Callaway, they have'em all. Good Luck.

I also recommend getting a used set.
I would not, however, recommend going to globalgolf.com. I bought a set from them recently. They were a different color than stated. They were in far worse shape than claimed, and they were covered in dirt. It seemed like an employee played them, and then threw them right in the box for shipping. I visited a website with globalgolf reviews and everyone had the same things to say. But maybe that is atypical if others have had good experiences. I would recommend 2ndswing, and highly recommend callawaypreowned.com.
But I would definitely get a good used set or that set of Adams LBlack suggested. My friend has that set, and he is suddenly breathing down my neck with his new scores.

Wow, first I have heard of poor GG reviews. But I never went fishing for any either.
In my experiences, their pre-owned stuff was in better condition than stated and super cheap.
I was thinking it would be less risky purchase for a beginner than hunting on the Bay.

go look around for Callaway Big bertha's or the early Callaway X- series irons and they will definitely be less than $200 and are about as forgiving as they come and still be usable as his handicap goes down. Another good set to look at would be Mizuno MX 23's or 25's. Lastly, look at the MacTec M685 (Macgregor) . There is a set being sold as a buy-it-now on Ebay for $119. It is a very good but underrated set.

The worlds your oyster at the $200 price point; you can find tons of great used iron sets on ebay for that price range. For new, these are a good value in my opinion http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/wilson-staff-ci7-control-irons-set-steel.html

Yeah, the WS Ci7's are great irons, though likely not the ideal set for a very beginner. They're on the "players" side of GI irons. But in general, I agree with the earlier advice, check globalgolf, 3balls, and callawaypreowned. Tons of great options at $300 or less and plenty of good stuff at $200 or less. As to globalgolf, I've bought and traded a ton with them, and while they're not perfect, more often than not I am pleased with my purchase. Just bought a couple of G15 hybrids from globalgolf in VG condition (which usually looks hit but otherwise nice), and while there were a ton of stickers and residue on the shafts, the heads were mint. A little WD-40 and Goo-Gone and 10 minutes later they looked like new. Good luck OP--it's cool to get your brother into the game.

wow thanks so much to everyone for all the great ideas! Just one thing, for those who made multiple suggestions what would be the most forgiving? He is as beginning as they come and I want him to be able to build some confidence.

Super forgiving and cheap:

http://www.globalgolf.com/product/golfclub/-/pid--1001766/iron-set/callaway/big-bertha-2004.aspx?gd=3

Forgiving and cheap:

http://www.globalgolf.com/product/golfclub.aspx?pid=1001783&gd=3

Many other options, but Callaway Big Berthas are designed to be as forgiving as possible, while the Callaway X series is designed to be forgiving but with more playability and without being so chunky.

A few more I found:

Why go used? Adams a4R irons can be had for under your price range NEW.

+1 on these....and they would be NEW. Not only that, you can search this site for a Dick's coupon & get another $20 to $50 off of that.
