Do not get the Ping Eye 2s....they are older than dirt and do not compare to new technology. My buddy plays them and is always a club length shorter because they are just old and can't compare to new tech.

Grab the TM R7s. You will not be disappointed.

They are shorter because the lofts are not all jacked up like today's irons. The PW is at 50.5 compared to say a g15 of today at 45. I wouldn't get caught up in the number on the bottom of the club. It means nothing. The Eye 2 irons are a timeless classic, and have been in several tour players bags for 20+ years. I think that they compare with anything made today. They are amazing irons, very forgiving, and have a clean look. They are a bit of an eye sore, but the can play. a +2 or a 22 can put them in his bag and play them well. I think they are one of the best irons made of all time.

G400 Max 9* Ping tour 65r

G25 23* oban devotion

I wouldn't start with offset clubs if you want to learn the right way....before you buy also do some research on the Wilson Di7 as you can have those new under $200 as well just no hybrid. Super straight irons though, just about impossible to work the ball which is great for a beginner.

Ping 410 18*, 22*, 27* Hybrids

Not sure about the OS version, but I LOVE my A4 Forged, same thing as the A4R but the original forged type. Forgiving, but great feel to them for me. Going playing a cheap starter set for a while and going to these, HUGE difference. I suddenly realized what it meant to feel the shot.

I found mine used on craigslist for $140... I also just found a set of forged Mizuno MX-23 on craigslist for a friend for $100! There are deals out there, go a few years old on the tech and save yourself a bundle. I'm still an aspiring high handicapper myself, so everything is used or off craigslist!

my brother doesnt really have the fastest swing would a stiff be too much? I dont want others to "walk the line" and make fun of him ;) But seriously the only A4r's i can find are in a stiff shaft, opinions?
[/quote]

Stiff shafts should be fine since as you say, he's strong.

My vote goes to some irons that have a large chunk of weight on the bottom sole. Callaway X-series (or similar) for example, Cleveland CG7/TA7 (or similar), Ping G-series, etc. Honestly, it's hard to go wrong so don't fret over the decision.

Ping G400 Max driver w/Aldila Rogue 125 Silver
Ping G425 5 wood & hybrid
Ping G30 irons w/Recoil 95

Ping G425 irons w/Accra ICWT 2.0 95
Ping Glide wedges w/Recoil 110
Ping Redwood Anser - the "real deal!"

I say NO on the Ping Eye 2. They are great irons but the heads are small compared to more modern game improvement clubs, so they are more difficult to hit.

I've played with all kinds of different irons over the years, including Eye 2, but it wasn't until I tried some bottom weighted cavity backs (G10's) that I truly understood what "forgiving" means.

I'm seriously considering buying a set of these for my teenage son for his first set...for a Christmas present.

I'm assuming you shopped around for the best deal...and if you don't mind me asking, where did you end up buying from?

Thanks,
KTM

Ive never spent more than $200 on a set of used irons and my current gamers are TM R7 TP's w/ project X shafts that i picked up at the PGA store for 179. You have plenty of options at the $200 price point but as a beginner, I would suggest a game improvement club of some sort. My first "real set" of irons that I bought a few years ago were Wilson Staff Di9's that were 199 brand new. VERY forgiving club and great quality compared to some other sets ive had. I ended up selling that set after a season for about $150 so i would imagine you could find a decent set in the 125-150 range, maybe less. Check out the BST on this site and also take a look at your local golf stores and play-it-again sports, they often have some great deals and are less popular so you can get some good finds. Best of luck to you and your bro.

well the A4r order didnt go thru properly and now they are out of the steel shaft.

How are the Adams RPM3 or RPM2 irons? If not I can still get the A4R on Sports Authority. All of this is really helpful because I have another friend looking at clubs too and he is also a beginner playing some Big 5 issued Ram Set.

I sure think people are missing the boat on the new/old release of the TA7's in the gunmetal...I picked a set up on ebay like brand new for $180 and have not put them down since.....they are beautiful clubs without alot of flash. They have a mod. sole and topline and are more than enough on the forgiveness chart. I just sold all my other irons including my X-24's, Rac's, and VR cavities....I really love these clubs and wish they had produced them in the gunmetal long ago...i will have them in the bag at that price for a very long time...they feel great too..solid..solid clubs at an incredible price....

While scouring around I saw that Dick's online has some...in steel. Not sure about any promo codes though.

I was kind of wondering about the RPM line as well.

That's because their lofts are weaker, not because they are that worse in technology.
