Adding weight to a putter

Cleveland Classic Black
Just what it says. I love my Cleveland Classic Black putter, but it weighs like nothing. Much too light. It is at 33 inches and I also want to cut it down an inch, so that will subtract weight as well. I don't want to put lead tape on the head; I doubt I could get enough on there without it looking like a disaster. I have thought about a lighter weight grip along with tape, but don't think that will be enough.

I suppose I am looking to add tungsten down the shaft and cork it, but I have never done this and don't know how much, or what effect it will ultimately have. I can't even really send it off to someone to have the work done, because I don't know what to tell them. No repair guys in the area, unfortunately.

Any thoughts? I would like a decently heavy putter, and need to feel more weight in the head particularly. I have tested the Heavy Putter series, and am not looking for something that heavy. Don't know the actual weights on those, though. Sorry to be so indirect, but can anyone throw out some ballpark estimates?

I play my putters at around 32" and like a heavier head as well (350-360 grams). I pretty much add my preferred amount of weight using lead plugs. I coat them in shafting epoxy and use a ram rod to jam them down the shaft towards the head. It helps if you know the raw weight of your putter head. (I always remove the head and weight it and then add the plugs before I reinstall the shaft.)

If you want a quicker method, measure and add increments of loose powder (like tungsten powder) down the shaft until you get the desired feel. Once you get that, use a small sized cork and jam it down the shaft.

I don't know the head weight of the Cleveland putter, but I believe the standard head weight for a 34-35" stock putter would be around 330grams.

Another vote for weight down the shaft. The head weighs in the range of 330 grams, so adding 30 down the shaft is nothing and won't shift the CG enough to notice.

that works and is prob cheapest... another- more complex and much more expensive- would be to use a tour lock opti-vibe weight (altho the powder will get the weight further down towards the head)

you won't lose much weight by cutting the shaft, but you will lose heaviness in the feel by shortening and using a heavier grip

So what do you guys think? A lighter grip, 30 grams down the shaft, and maybe some tape on the sole? The putter is stamped with 340g on the trailing edge, but I don't know if that is head or total weight.

Thanks for all the replies, btw.

If you choose to put weight down the shaft a lot of times epoxied or glued in weights have a tendency of working free from all the banging a round a putter takes while in the bag on a golf cart so after adding the required weight top the weights off with a correct sized cork to keep them in place.

340 is the headweight. I haven't tried the powder in the shaft method but it sounds ok. If you don't mind spending a hundred bucks or so, you can have Tom Slighter install tungsten weights to the head. Although some do not like the appearance of lead tape, it is a good alternative. One 1-inch wide strip (the high density type from Golfworks) weighs four grams, I've weighed it on a kitchen scale. Phil, Tiger, etc use lead tape. Another route is to buy a Cameron Studio Select/California or more recent Odyssey putter. They have standard 355-360g head for 33 inch length. I use lead tape on one of my putters, the rest are stock 355-360g.

I was thinking that also.
I would like to know a machine shop around Orange county who can drill a hole and put some tungsten weights/powder on the sole.

Why do you want to drill into the head?

Use the tape first. Get it the way you like it. Take the tape off and weigh it. Then pour an equal amount of Tungsten power down the shaft and ram a cork in after it.

I like tungsten because it has a density about 1.5 times that of lead so you can get more weight in lower. I poured 18g down the shaft of a becu Anser 4. I'd kind of be afraid to go all the way to 30g, though. Perhaps some combination of the two. I think one of the Clev. Class. mallets has a 350g head....

Bump!

Want to cut 2.5 inches of my 8883 putter shaft. The 8883 is a toe weighted, heel shafted putter. Question is will adding a 10g tip weight affect the natural balance of the face? I know I could just use lead tape or powder, but prefer a tip weight since I have one that will fit perfectly. I want to try to add some sw back and have reshafted many clubs so it's something I can do easily.

10gm ain't gonna be enough to compensate for 2.5"... if you're asking whether the weight will affect the toe hang/face balancing, the answer is no

I need about 30g to get back to original sw and powder is about the only way to achieve that which is still an option. Toe hang/balance was my main concern, Thanks

Added a 10g tip weight and changed the putter grip from a 70g to 57g grip, the putter feels pretty good.

Buy a cleveland belly putter (400G), remove the stock shaft, reshaft with a 370 tip putter shaft and regrip. Plenty of head weight, no lead tape and same design.
[/quote]

Bought an "Almost Belly", cut it to 35", put a 1.3 Super Stroke on it. Very nice putter! Would like to do the same thing on a belly XG #7.
