Best muni in Austin?

Best muni in Austin?

I'll be in Austin Monday and am looking for the best muni. Any help would be appreciated.

Based on my limited experience, I'd have to say Roy Kizer. There's another one that I played and the name escapes me but it used to be the old Austin Country Club...Harvey Penick used to call it home so I enjoyed the historic nostalgia of that one.

I usually play Jimmy Clay (adjacent to Kizer) and its usually in great shape. Played there Saturday, but was a bit disappointed with the greens (sandy and not very even).

I would also recommend Morris Williams, this is a fantastic course, the best muni IMHO.

Not sure which course was the old Austin Country Club course, but maybe it was Lions Municipal? The course is rather short (~6000 yards) but has some very challenging holes (#1 par 4 severe dogleg right, #5 par 4 blind approach from tips, #6 par 4 slight dogleg right, don;t go left, #11 par 4 uphill, #12 par 5 water in play to an elevated green, #16 par 4 Hogan's hole with water in play and a very narrow fairway). Lions has not been in good shape since the start of the drought, but its still a fun course that is a must.

Neither of them are municipal courses, but Falconhead and Avery Ranch are both public-access, beautifully well-kept, and fun to play! Falconhead is the more challenging of the 2, but both have stunning elevation changes (I wouldn't recommend walking either of them) and great Hill Country scenery and plenty of native wildlife all over the course.

Austin has 5 city courses..

Out of the 5, Hancock is in the worst shape and only 9 holes. I would not waste my time playing there. $12 green fee. This is the one that used to be ACC and Harvey was a pro here.

Lions has history and is a short layout, and also won't be around after 5 years. UT is going to close the course and build condos/malls. I played there last weekend, and the greens are in bad shape (sandy and shaggy). $20 green fee

Jimmy Clay and Kizer is an 18 hole complex. Kizer is links style wirh water, Clay is nothing home to write abt, but both are in good shape. $25-$35 green fee.

Morris Williams has some elevation changes and is also in good shape. $20 green fee.

If you want to play other public courses, I would check golfnow.com and try to get on Falconhead, Wolfdancer (in Bastrop), Forest Creek or Avery Ranch.

If you can squeeze in 9 holes at Harvey Penick campus, they have 9 holes (par 30 w/ no Par 5s) that is in great shape and challenging as well.

The course that you are describing is Lion's, but it never was ACC. Hancock was ACC.
Then what it moved to what is now Riverside Golf Club. And from there to its present location near the 360 bridge. Wish I could get to play a round there..

Based on the Austin parks website that ATX also shows I was going to choose Kiser. But do to these good suggestions I will look into the other public courses that ATX listed. Scheduled to drive thru on the 14th so this is perfect timing.
