Presidents Cup...Why is this played?

Just wondering the thoughts of the GOLFWRX community why this tournament is played and what does it mean? I think it's a waste of time and doesn't mean a thing...players don't get payed and yes the profits if any go to some charity that pockets the money...why is it that big of deal? Thoughts??

I honestly don't know why so many people have such negatives opinions on the Presidents Cup.

It's just a team event, so it's different from a normal tournament. It includes traditional golf "modes": fourball, foursomes, etc. So it's just fun to play on a team and have the United States and International teams go head-to-head.

Well....the ryder cup only includes the european tour players....

the president's cup includes the rest of the world....

AND....the ryder cup is run by the PGA and the prez cup by the PGA tour....

...no brainer for the PGA tour....

i believe it was started as an exhibition to showcase the globalization of the game. I also find it a bit of a meh event. The internationals have no sense of team, really.

I'd love to see a 3 team tournament featuring the americas vs europe vs asia/oceania. Of course that kind of leaves South Africa out of it, but they can just deal with it

I will say this, though: I think it's unfair for the players of Europe, as well as those from other international countries, because they can only play in this "team event" every two years. The Americans get to do it every year...the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. Rory McIlroy, and others, for example, are only allowed to participate in the Ryder Cup. So that's a bit unfair.

I grew up in the UK so the Ryder cup is a huge deal to me, I watch every second of it and pull really hard for the European team. As a Canadian the International team is supposed to represent me but like MTLJeff said its kind of a meh thing, I don't get all worked up about the international team winning, I just don't really care. That being said i'll watch it because i'm a dork and I like to watch golf on TV.

No. It was started because the Tour has nothing to do with the Ryder Cup, and some of the international players also felt left out, nothing to do with "globalization".

I enjoy the team format and seeing people play for pride of country instead of money.
I agree, but in this tournament it seems that it is only the American team playing for pride of country. The international team is made up of players from countries as diverse as Argentina, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. The only thing those countries have in common is their status as former British colonies, and honestly that status means very little to an Afrikaaner, a South American of Amerindian or Iberian descent, or an Australian or Canadian whose only connection to the old empire is that their grandmother was born in Scotland or Wales.

7,8,13,24,27 are all non-eligible for the RC. That doesn't include players like Els, Goosen, Ogilvy etc who have fallen off the radar this year. A couple of years back and you would have had a RC without Els, Goosen and Scott who were in the top 10. Places outside of Europe and the States produce great players and this is their compete in team golf. It doesn't happen often and they deserve just as much chance to compete as Europe. And of course their is the money for the tour.

If the Ryder Cup has 100% of my interest every time it's played, the Presidents probably gets around 50%

Yes, I'm a Euro, but rightly or wrongly, despite some great golf on display, it just doesn't stir any emotions or particularly excite me

Having said that, if it all comes down to Ogilvy or Scott v Tiger on the 18th on the last day............! :good:

Money making exercise for the PGA Tour.

Hunter Mahan will not be blubbing if he chunks a chip to lose the Presidents Cup, thats for sure.

I'll still watch it though.

MONEY!
Exactly, money $$$$ grab all parties. TV $$$ and the showcasing of "international" golf is the key.
With having a Ryder Cup event then Presidents Cup back to back each year diminishes the events IMO but hey its all about the $$$$ and greed on each association.

Instead of the Americans playing every year, should be like a King of the roost-style tournament. The team who wins the year carries on to defend the next year against the team that wasn't involved. Oh, to dream...

great idea!
it will give more significance to pres. cup.
Ladies should do the same. solheim cup is a joke when best players are mostly outside europe and us.

Like all professional sports, the Presidents Cup is played because a sufficient number of people are interested enough in watching it to make it economically viable.

Like all professional sports, it means nothing.

What's your real issue here?

I"m glad it's on. It's interesting golf, and many of the key players in the world are there for us to observe in a relatively unusual event -- and IMO it's superior to most "Silly Season" golf offerings.
