I played some of the best golf of my life in the late 90's. However, I am playing much more consistent now thanks to the advances in technology. Here was my set-up througout most of my junior golf career...

Whaat? No way...

Way.

Picked up the game in 2000 ..... and only because so many guys I knew played. Then I got the bug.

Ahh yes, I miss the late 90s...that's the period I was burning the candle on both ends...a wood meant I met a new dame, a wedge was the first word in my head after seeing what the dame was wearing under the skirt...and a hole in one was...nevermind....

Golf at that time was going to the range, picking up a club from the rental bin and just start hacking the crap out of the ball only to see it fall no more than 30 yards away...and hear me saying, "did u see that? I hit the red flag!?"

Yes, those years were definitely something else...

I found a 975D in my garage with a Dynamic Gold. The game may be easier for most now, but I miss the feel of the 975 when compared to the new Drivers.

If you miss the feel of that old driver so much, then why aren't you playing it?

Yeah, I have one of those and hit it for years. I only upgraded to a 983. I don't like the big heads of modern drivers. Actually, most of my clubs are 10-20 years old. There is no real reason to change them. However, I am in the market for new set of irons after hitting mine for over 10 years (Mizuno T Zoid Pros). At the range tonight, I just looked closely at them and they had all the characteristics that I am looking for in my new irons, except that I want pure blades. They have a straight leading edge, bit stubby, thin top line and soft. I am thinking now that they can last me another 10 years.
[/quote]

Hi Dog, in my humble opinion, the shafts are where any improvement will be, they get old and rusty and weaker, I picked up 20 yards in my 7 iron down to 5 iron going from hogan apex blades dg s300s to mizuno mp53 with px 6.0.

i put a px 6.0 in the hogan 6 iron to test - that was the distance right there.

TLDR - get custom fit for shafts, keep your t-zoids. no need to spend money for the sake of it. just bang the new shafts with new grips in your existing set.

good luck!

I miss that time because golf was my life. I was in high school with no responsibilities (other than my car detailing business for spending money) and GOLF! The club where I played was booming and we would have 16-20 people in the Saturday "shootout". I remember my bag like it was yesterday.

975D with ProForce 75X
Big Bertha Warbird 3W Memphis 10
Titleist 962 2-PW
Cleveland 588 RTG 56* and 60*
Cameron Newport 2 TeI3
Professional 100 (or whatever balls I found for weekday rounds)
Ping Hoofer

Now the club has lost many of its members (I no longer belong there as well) and golf gets put to the back of the line quite often. I can buy most any club I want within reason and although I love my equipment its not the same as being a teenager and coveting the newest Titleist club on the market. I remember the day I got my 962s for my birthday. My dad put them in my bag and didn't tell me. I kept my clubs in storage at the club and I will never forget seeing them for the first time. Thats one set of clubs I will never sell.

975F fairway wood... didn't matter if I hit it like crap b/c it was the coolest 3 wood to own. Loved that with the S400 DG shaft.

My dad's golfing buddies would drool when they heard I had one... little did they know it was a two-way street, I was desperate to get their Biggest Big Bertha drivers!

Strata balata golf balls... use the 90's when it was cold and the 100's when it was warm... It's Science.

Thats when I fell in love with golf, so yeah, I miss it a lot:

1) I miss that golf wasn't really "cool", you were kind of in a unique group if you played golf
2) I miss old school club pros, the guy in the shop who was 50 years old, drank entirely too much, yet could really play golf.
3) I miss that people bought clubs from pro shops and they were actually stocked.
4) I miss the gold boxes that titleist professionals came in.
5) I miss the sound of metal spikes on concrete.
6) I miss the old bag room, I had entirely too much fun in there.
7) I miss that there were not so many daily fee golf courses, seemed like way more people joined clubs and spent more time around the game and the people.
8) I miss seeing good players with old accuform blades, an old beat up persimmon 3 wood, a putter from 1937 and a great big bertha driver he picked up last year.
9) I miss that people played with knockoff clubs, and having a new set of pings or callaways was such a big deal because they were so expensive.
10) I miss ashworth shirts with the logos on the sleeve
11) I miss foot joy classics
12) I miss the ping hoofer
13) I miss big bertha woods
14) I miss the orange taylormade clubs
15) I miss that it was a HUGE deal to have a scotty cameron, I got my first one for my 16th birthday and I still have it today.
16) I most of all miss the passion I had for the game when I was a kid, I still like golf a whole lot but its just not the same.

Ditto. Some kids were mallrats, others hung out at the beach all summer, but I grew up at the golf course

I miss persimmon, blades (the hard to hit kind), bullseye putters, and balata. You can't even replicate the old school bag now, because finding balata balls in a playable condition is almost impossible.

i would agree nothing beats being a teenager. when i come back from summer breaks most of my decent friends say i never saw you over the summer. well my golf buddies see me and so do really close friends (every now and then when i need a break usually sunday mornings before family 9 holes) but i tell my buddies if you want to see come to the golf course. i have a part time job and caddy 1-3 rounds a week and have members fight over who gets me so i think im doing well usually walk away with 200$ a week which goes right to golf(and a little subway)because i have no living costs.

Great thread, I spent my summers walking 18 and then swimming at the pool until my parents picked me up. Great times.

I do, but not for golf. I had Lynx Paralax irons, 855 woods, Zebra putter, and Cleveland wedges. And I sucked, big time. I think I only shot in the 80s a handful of times. The only thing that outstripped how much I loved golf was how bad I was at it. I sucked so bad that I quit golf until two years ago. But, man, I miss college.

Buddy,

You almost made me cry like Bubba Watson yesterday. This was a real flashback. I was just really getting into the game and my older cousin and uncle (who had money) just bought Ping Zing 2 irons with red graphite shafts in them. I remember they both got a TEI3 Scotty and I was still rolling my knock off Anser. Number 16 probably hit home the most. I really feel like I have lost my passion for the game as soon as I started working in the business. Number 9 was hilarious to me. I remember my uncle beating it into my head telling me that I didn't need a 975 or a warbird but what I needed was the knock off version, it was the same thing for half the price.

Thanks for the good memories,

Fish
