Classic wedge designs you would like to see again?

Recommended Posts

Can I say Wilson r-20. It is close to the r-90. A little more onset I think. Nice brown shaft too! Seriously I still use one. I am laughed at for it too(a lot). It can get the ball out of anything. Great from long rough and firm bunkers. I cary and vokey 200 56-14 and a wilson r-20 specs unknown to me. I often hope someone out there will make a update to that wedge with modern matrials and such. Maybe with a little more bounce and a c-grind to allow it to be laid open without adding a lot of bounce. wink! wink! I bought one on ebay once and tried to add some weld on the bottom and shave down the trailing edge. It did not work out well. I did not think it was possible to make the r-20 uglier. I was wrong.

Eye 2 Be Cu, never owned one, but always wanted one.....

588 BeCu and RTG, I had a BeCu and tried to bend it, SNAP! goes the hosel!

Wilson Harmonized, isn't this what Watson used for his famous chip in at Pebble?

Sandy Andy

Hogan Sure Out, great out of the sand, impossible to use off the fairway

Spaulding Johnny Miller Finness Wedge 56* with a thin sole, my first favorite wedge I learned to work magic with it, sadly I left it laying on the 18th green while finishing at dusk, wasn't there the next day....went and bought my first Cleveland. Damn, that must have been almost 20 years ago......

Hogan Special SI

Special place in my heart. I loved that club, and holed more bunker shots with it than I will probably hole aggregate for the rest of my life. I went through three of these sand irons and when the final one had no grooves left on the face a couple of years ago, it was time to move on. I still haven't found anything that feels as good out of the sand.

Another vote for the vokey 400s. I still have a 452 that goes in the bag on occasion. If they could make an oil can 400 series, non-spin milled, I'd be all over that.

Oil Can 400 Series?? That would be NAUGHTY!!! You listening Bob Vokey??

I would like to see that in a 52* 54* 56* 58* and 60* (I would play a 54* and a 60*)

I agree with them being non-spin milled...

Make a Nickel or Tour Chrome version and he couldn't make them fast enough...

As long as they weren't $250 a pop,.. (like the tenth anniversary) they would become as, or more popular than any wedge to date!!! Especially with the new grind like his 10th anniversary ones!!!

Hell, if he would just re-release the 400's again like they were,... I would be all over them..

This year, I found a Wilson R-90 and a very similar Tommy Armour R-91 for $10 each at golf shops in great condition. My daughter's golf teacher swears by them and owns several R-90's. The R-91 appeared to have a bit more loft than the R-90, and I gave it to her instructor to add to his collection. Personally, I prefer my 588 and my Eye 2 wedges over either, as they seem to have better feel to me.

I think I just got a hold of an old R-91.

Nice to see so many votes for the various Hogan Specials they made over the years. I wore out a BeCu (concave face, bottom four grooves gone) before switching to the steel version. I've got an extra for when that one wears out. I'm still on my original 588 RTG after about 12 years. They seem to hold up very well--plus you can sharpen the grooves without worrying about chrome & rust.

Now a 485 with a heel grind...that's an intriguing idea....

I was at a used shop this morning and I picked up a Wilson R90 for pretty cheap. I like collecting wedges (not for value, for fun) and for less than $20, I couldn't say no.

IIRC, didn't Wilson re-make the Original R-90 in the last 10 or 20 years? I think the one I bought is a re-make, its a round head with a "Original R-90 Sand Iron" stamp and a brown shaft.

No matter what year its from, I can't wait to take it to the range later today and practice some bunker shots and chips with it.

Great thread BTW!
Another vote for the 485.
That's the one with the really wide sole right? I don't remember ever hitting a chunk with that wedge. It just didn't look classic enough from the bottom. I wonder what a 485 with a heel grind could do.
The 691 was the wide sole, the 485 had a narrower sole (compared to the 588). I some combination of each of those through the late 80s and 90s. Haven't been impressed with the Cleveland offerings since -- starting with the 797 (900 and onward).

Put another vote in for the Vokey 400 to be brought back -- never played it, but by the time I was interested in road testing --- discontinued. Love all the Vokey offerings, but a different head design would be nice -- even if only in limited runs.

Another vote for the Cleveland 691 ... I bought at least 4 of these on e-bay when they could still be had in relatively 'new' condition, 1st real wedge I ever played and kept using for years until I couldn't get them in decent condition anymore.

The original Cleveland 485 Tour Edition. Not sure how many remember it, but the 485 has had two distinct shapes, and the original 485 Tour Edition was very different from the 485 Tour Action. Nothing that I've seen since then quite compare to it, and they only made it for a year or two.

I was also a sucker for the old MacGregor Penna CF 4000 with the black face.

Not exactly true. The 485 Sand Wedge had a narrow sole, but the 485 Lob wedge had a very wide sole, the widest Cleveland made until they came up with that 588 RS.

Anyone still have any love for the original Snake Eyes Ernie Vaderson grind forged by Smith and Wesson? First real premium wedge on the market that I remember.

The Cleveland 588 TSC (Tour Satin Chrome) were awesome. They came with a special grind on the sole....heel and toe relief which is similar to today's Vokey M grind. Totally retail.

And, via their van Tour Van which drove to cities, you could get it totally built custom for you...shaft, grip, weight etc. I got a set of 56 and 60...still have them though not in my bag now.

Those grinds were years ahead of its time. And about $105 per club.

I agree. Don't know why they stopped. I prefer the leading edge flatter whereas the newer Cleveland models are somewhat more rounded. The 588 should be reinstated, especially the satin and 53deg.
