bring sticks or rent?
hey all

so were off to Mexico next week for 8 days
kind of a vacation/work thing
been doing some reading and such on the Myan (which is where we r going)
never been before
were flying in direct and staying at a 5 star all inclusive resort

wifey is a bit paranoid with the hype the media is putting on the recent murders on those 2 BC natives
how safe is it to travel to Mexico these days??
anyone who has been recently have any travel tips / ideas for us???

also am going to obviously do some golfing while there
should i bring my own sticks or rent?
would bringing my own stuff come off as flashy and target me to the wrong people possibly??
really hate renting......and have some new gear i wanna try out....

thanks for your help everyone

Th Myan in Cancun? If you are going there don't worry about a thing, IMO it is safe. Regarding clubs, I think the risk is just how the clubs will travel. Do you want to risk damage to you babies for a couple of rounds? If you are playing for fun and not worried about your score or what you shoot I would say just rent them. The course should have good rentals. Now if you are going to play every day and want to be serious about it take the clubs with you.

Fwiw, I play with a airline pilot who services Mexico, so he visits frequently. He said the only way he would go to Mexico at this time would be to stay in an all inclusive resort and just not leave the grounds. Doesn't sound like much fun to me! I prefer a vacation where I'm not worried about being decapitated!

I went to Tulum (about 1 1/2 hrs south of Cancun) a few years ago for a destination wedding, and stayed at Dreams Tulum (all inclusive) for a week. I brought my clubs and played daily at a nine hole course about 15 minutes up the road - Puerto Aventuras - http://www.puertoaventuras.com/golf.html and one round at Playacar http://www.palace-resorts.com/playacar-golf-club/ ... It's really a beautiful area - at least it was when I was there... Good Luck, I hope it works out

I was in the Myan area at an all-inclusive resort for my honeymoon this summer. The wife and I had some real concerns about going down there but our travel agent assured us that at a resort we were safe (of course she was also making commission off of us).

But once we got there that was confirmed. If you're at a resort, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. We even took a bus into Cancun for a day trip one day and never felt unsafe (so many tourists there you almost don't even feel like you're in a foreign country).

Now if you plan on running around the streets of Juarez you may want to re-consider. But if you're at a resort you have nothing to worry about. BTW, the Myan ruins are amazing. Have fun!

Mexico can still be a safe place to go visit and even explore a little. The last time we went, we flew into PVR and took the public transportation into Sayulita and were just fine. We are planning to go to MZT in Feb but plan on staying in at the Mayan there. Though we plan on spending much of our time at the resort, we also want to explore around. Luckily for us, we will be there during the Carnival season. That is gonna be a serious [s]party[/s] cultural experience.
Things I would avoid: wandering around unknown neighborhoods at night, buying weed off the streets, driving in rural areas (esp. mainland). I think if you stayed with crowds you'll find safety in masses. Have fun and take your sticks. Not sure which Mayan you are going, but if you go to PVR, get your concierge to get you a tee time at Punta Mita. There are also a couple other Nicklaus tracks that are stunning as well.
Have fun!

oh... one more thing. The top shelf tequila is unreal. The second rate stuff they send up here is garbage.

Take your clubs. Been to Mexico 5 times and to other areas in the Caribbean several other times and have never had an issue with clubs being damaged. The reality is that club breakage is very rare. On the other hand, if you are playing at a high end golf resort and you are a standard fit you can rent equipment as long as you don't mind the cost (which might be a saw-off if the airline charges for clubs).

Mexico (Cancun, Playa del Carmen) are safe areas, but if you go looking for trouble (go out until the wee hours drunk as a skunk) you will find it just like anywhere else in the world. If you are going to drink like a fish, do it at the resort. Doing drugs or buying drugs is really asking for it. Remember, in Mexico if you are arrested for anything, you are presumed guilty and have to prove otherwise (the prisons in Mexico make Pelican Bay look like a holiday). Not saying you will do anything bad, just saying.

The BC girl that was killed in Huatulco was dating a drug dealer (I was in Huatulco last week) who was executed and the other one was known to have money in the house (lots of it) and flashed it. Both were just asking for trouble.

45 minutes South of Cancun is Playa del Carmen, a terrific town that is the center of the Mayan Riviera fast becoming the top spot to vacation in Mexico. Nice part is that there are no high rises to speak of. Most of the resorts are set back from the road with large areas of vegitation so you don't feel like its Cancun or Alcapulco. There are Mayan ruins to visit in Tulum and Playa del Carmen is fun to visit at night with many good restarurants and shops. Very clean and secure.
There are 8 courses between Cancun and Playa, all signature tracks that offer every type of design. Here is my feedback from the last trip:

Playacar Golf Club on the Maya Riviera, 35 minutes south of Cancun is a very difficult Robert von Hagge design. While many in the U.S. may not be familiar with von Hagge, he is a highly talented and respected designer in Mexico and the Carribean. He is known for extremely narrow fairways and small greens and Playacar is no exception. The course is cut from the jungle with cenotes (natural sink holes from underground rivers and acquifers) throughout the track. The course playes 7,144 from the tips (that is far to difficult for most players with the winds in play). The Blues are 6,639 and course carries a 76.1/148 slope rating (huge for Mexico or anywhere else for that matter). The par 4 seventh at 455 yards is the number one handicap and considered one of the most difficult par 4's in Mexico. The back nine is 400 yards shorter than the front but don't be lulled into getting too confident. The shorter holes are doglegs with undulating fairways protected by crazy bunkers. With the wind you will be hitting 2 and 3 club variations to small greens. This course is tough but is a lot of fun when on vacation. It is one of the older courses on the Riviera Maya being completed in 1994. The greens fees for the morning run $180 with range balls, cart, snacks and unlimited beverages including beer. Twilight fees are $130 and begin at 1PM.
Playa Paraiso, Maya Riviera Mexico

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Iberostar Playa Paraiso course on the Maya Riviera, about 30 minutes south of Cancun. The course was designed by P.B. Dye, finished in 2005 and is a beauty. It is one of the newer tracks lining the area between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. The course features a lot of undulating greens, some that are almost crazy but fun for a resort track. Like other P.B. courses, this one is packed with bunkers, curved fairways and hollows in front of the majority of greens. The par 5 14th is one of the best at 485 yards featuring a steep hard dogleg. The course is carved out of the jungle and looks like Dye moved a lot of dirt. The course plays 6,683 from the tips with a 72.4/136 slope rating. A round including cart with snacks and drinks including beer runs $180 in the morning and $130 at twilight that starts at 1PM. Compared to some of the other tracks like El Cameleon at $259 a round, this is definitely worth playing.

El Camaleon, a Greg Norman signature design course. While not usually a big fan of Norman designed tracks this was a good resort course. The conditions were excellent. The fairways were perfect and the greens were pristine. Traps were consistent throughout. The course reads 7024 from the tips with a 71.1/131 slope rating, 6562 from the whites. Like other Norman courses, this one had, for the most part, wide fairways and huge greens. You could find yourself with 80 foot putts on a number of occasions. Course meanders through thick vegetation and is bordered on a number of holes with hotel suites. Two holes, both par 3’s are right on the ocean providing beautiful views. There are 6 par 4’s over 425. This is good because with the wind you are hitting long approach shots to greens. The 4 par 5’s averaged just over 540 yards.
If you are staying at any Mayakoba resort the 18 hole rate is $181 per round with carts. There is a twilight rate of $77 that works. Many players choose to play 9 holes at around 2PM when the weather is nice and the shadows start to fall across the course. The staff, outside of the pro shop, were terrific and helpful. Pro shop staff needs to get their act together and do a better job of coordinating with the hotel front desks. The often have conflicting information regarding rates, especially for junior players under 17. All in all a good week of golf and sun.

I go every year, interesting thing is that the man who got killed is my father in laws friend. Small Mexican town and they lived there half the year. Just unfortunate, wrong place at the wrong time. Stay in the resort and will have no issues.

I always play the Iberostar (cause we stay there) but absolutely awesome track. Well worth it. And yes, 2+ rounds bring the sticks, nothing like paying $70 for a beat up putter and a 11.5 regular shafted driver! lol

This will be our 10th golf trip to Cozumel, love the place, very safe and a good course. We always take our clubs and leave them at the course, nothing has ever disappeared, except for the dirt in the grooves. Take lots of balls as most courses are carved out of the jungle and you don't want to go in there. Watch out for crocs, take lots of pictures and have a great time. Green fees can be high, we stay in a hotel that offers free green fees, $30 to rent a cart for the day. Check for deals from the hotel and avoid all people with logos on their shirts, they are all time share salespeople! Enjoy the sea food, coffee and the orange juice.

 • 2 weeks later...

I'm going to be in Playa Del Carmen for the Mayakoba Golf Classic and am hoping to get a round or two in while I'm there. I'm looking at playing Grand Coral (Nick Price design). What do you suggest for storing my clubs while I'm there? I'm a little hesitant to leave them in the room while we're gone.

If anyone else is going to be there during the week, shoot me a message and maybe we can hook up for a round y cerveza! BTW - I love it when I'm put in charge of planning the trip - little does she know that we're next door to a tour stop!

No One is going to steal a set of golf clubs. Where would the maid put it - under her skirt? Plus there is no re-sale market for them. Camera's, phones, cash and passports are what someone might be after.

If the maids stole stuff, they would be fired! I've spent at least 11 weeks in Mexico and have never "lost" anything, not even my self respect. Be sure to tip well, that is most of the income for the service industry, and have a great time. We leave tomorrow for Mexico, just packing the clubs now.

Mexico is safe as long as you stay in the resort areas you are secure. Most of the crime occours outside the tourist areas. My wife and I rented a car and went all over the place in Cancun, we drove to Coba, Chichenitza, and other ruins. Sometimes we were the only ones on the road and we were never afraid.

Mexico is perfectly safe as long as you use common sense.

Don't travel alone.

Don't wonder away from tourist areas.

Don't wonder around at night.

Don't flash cash, gold, or other really valuable items.

Don't buy anything illegal.

Don't get so intoxicated that you are likely to make any of the above mistakes.

By and large the people killed were not random. Those kidnapped allow themselves to be in the position to be.

Been to Mexico several times and never once felt unsafe. Even walked back to resort at night in large group and felt completely safe.

As for the sticks, take them or you will regret it. Even the nicest Hilton property I visited had sort of older clubs as rentals. They were standard length, loft, and lie also which did not fit my game. When I asked the pro shop about any other sets they chuckled at me.

But...

I did get a free round and a free dinner. I took a 3 hour tour of a time share and, even though I told them from the get-go that I had no intention of buying anything, they showed me the property and allowed me to play free with the wife and gave us a nice dinner.

Like someone said the Tequila down there is incredible. No hangover from it at all. True agave (sp) with a really pleasant after taste. Mmmmmm....delicious and nutricious.
