Does anyone still game Ping Eye 2's?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

Can someone refer me to a club maker who can effectively bend these? I have a set that has been refinished by an outside vendor (prior to my purchase) and the serials have worn off. My wedges (Eye 2+ Sand and Lob) are on the way to Ping for bending now, but they won't work on the rest of the set. The locals won't work on them either. Any ideas? Please feel free to PM me if any of you know if someone who can bend these from green to white.

Hard to say. They were sold to me a green dots, but my suspicion is that they have been worked on previously since the sampling of irons I had measured the other day was all over the map (68.5* lie on lob compared to blue dot specs on the 6). My guess is that they will all be either standard, black dot to various degrees of upright. My aim is to get them to consistent white dot specs. My local guys won't touch them, and, even if they let me use the machines to bend them myself, I have never had luck with Pings due to the "bounce back." Open to suggestions . . .

You told them you would not hold them accountable if they broke and they still said no?

Why did you refinish them before you they were bent?

Why not get them all measured before you decide how much you bend them? if they are in fact green dot, that is pretty close to white and likely won't make that much of a difference.

Sorry I wasn't clear. The clubs were refinished before I bought them. I purchased them from a member here, who used the third party that sells through eBay. They range from blue dot to beyond silver, so I would notice, and the locals said that they would just "bounce back" to their current lie if they attempted to bend them.

. This is a myth. I have had a set bent 2 degrees no problem. The guy I use in the KC area says they are harder to move than most but he has bent many sets. If you have a good machine and a good bar they will bend the bounce back is caused by a loose fixture that slips and gives the illusion of bouncing back.

I've bent lots of various Ping sets through the years and I've never experienced "bounce back". Maybe I'm just lucky.

  • 1 month later...

My dad bought Ping Eye 2's back in the early 80's and I learned to play golf with these. Then finally in the late 90's I bought my own set of Ping ISIS. I used them for 15 years and then just last year I bought Callaway XR Pros. Anyway, when my dad passed away my brother took over my dads Ping Eye 2's since he didnt have his own set. Coincidentally, we were messing around yesterday at my Uncles house which is on a small lake. I hit the 7 iron from the Ping Eye 2 set yesterday and I'm not even kidding - that was one of the most pure feeling and well struck irons I've hit. It really makes me wonder if the club and the shaft just happen to be optimally fitted for me. I'm going to have to try a round of golf with them this year and see what happens! Greatest made irons off all time!

I found a set on Ebay with rusted shafts. The heads are beautiful. I experimented with Super Peening Blues but am going with Dynamics instead. The Pure DTX reminder grips arrived today. They will be sent to L&L Golf to be retumbled Friday.

I have really been struggling with my irons so far this season. I know the root cause is that I am still scared to jam my weight forward onto my left side following knee surgery in the off season. Either way, my swing is not where it needs to be to hit my AP2's well right now. They let me get away with a lot of not-so-perfect swings, but they do have their limits.

ย

Anyway...long story short: I took my Eye2's out to play nine yesterday morning and had my best round of the season. I put the ball within 10 feet on both Par 3's and I only missed 2 greens in regulation, and even those were not by much. These clubs really are magic. I know at the end of the day I need to work on my swing, but 3 kids under the age of 6 and a household that needs fixed have put an end to my days of going to the range 2-3 times a week. I think the Eye2's are going to stay in the bag a while.

Nice thing I discovered with the Ping BeCu.

ย

I recently bought a set of BeCu Eye 2's because I was afraid I would die never having owned a set while looking for origs. I bought the + type. Actually the same club except that the grooves are very slightly closer together to suit the USGA. Anyways, I was not as happy as I thought I ought to be. Not caring for them much and never having hit them, I decided to clean them up and used car wax to do so. I would normally just use denture cleanser but I did not really care for this set and decided to experiment. Surprise. The set came out way pretty. I tried the same thing on my stainless originals and, no visible effect.

ย

Well, at least the coppers look better and I might even try them out one of these days.

I probably shouldn't reply since I no longer game an Eye 2 (2+ to be up front) BUT I just gave it up about a month ago. I have been playing a 2 iron red dot since college (and I'm 44 now). It was finally replace by a hybrid. The new cally hybrid was the first one I ever liked at address and didn't hook randomly (yes I know it is user error).

ย

The 2 iron was such money off the tee, fairway and for punching out. The feel was as soft as my Mizuno MP5. Not sure how they did that. The offset and flex were just a great match. Just could never hit out of the rough, hence the hybrid. Not selling. Will be in the storage bag forever. Along with my old titleist DCI!!!!

Just found a set of eye2+ though missing the 7 iron....oh well...worse, for me at least, is that they appear/feel to be stiff, and I'm a way soft-regular flex guy...but it will be fun to try them out....

Just like few posters before, I took mine out last Friday. Never had Eye 2's in high school, always wanted them in early 90's. Bought a few sets few years ago. Only hit them once in a while and always very good, but again, played em last Friday. Well I shot 78 (9hcp), after not having hit them since last year. Slippery original diamond grips. Iron shot after iron shot right on the money! 4-iron off the tee; smoked! Par 3's, great shots. All day. I'm gonna regrip them, didn't want to replace those original grips but I'm keeping these in the bag until July just to give them some love. I was in denial but I just don't hit better iron shots with anything else!!!! I actually like the weaker lofts, I feel more accurate.

The Eye 2s were designed for stiff shafts. Karsten knew what he was doing. They won't feel stiff when you flush a few.

I've owned both, and prefer the + version over the originals. Enjoy them!

About every third time this thread refreshes I empty out the bag and put the eye 2's back in. Hit them at the range yesterday and wondered why I took them out of the bag last time.

Yep, that's what I do.....Just took a 5 iron to the range and hit about 60 balls......they are just perfect, just feel and look so good!

Makes you wonder how they would do against new stuff in Magazine club reviews. They'd have to compare loft to loft not 7 iron to 7 iron, but as far as easy to hit, accuracy [etc.]. No shortage of posts here by members that say they play as well as the new irons they have.
