Does anyone still game Ping Eye 2's?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

I also realized after the purchase that my becu set is eye2+, 1 - sw, all the same regnr, all with orange labelled KT-shafts

BUT the 7 iron, coming with a red labelled JZ-shaft (the engraving of the (same) number also looks slightly different from the others

what is the difference in these shafts please and how can I see, how stiff they are?

I read here somewhere that the eye2+ have different lofts, how does that compare to eye2 standard

and with eye2+ there are also 2 variants - what do I have: plus or no plus, that is the question ...

gentlemen, please enlighten a lost European

this is a great site to check out Ping's various shaft offerings and specs. Have a look. Some great info:

http://community.pinggolf.com/community/index.cfm?page=knowledge_display&knowledge_id=431

CS-LITE (Regular & Stiff): Weight: 93.9 ®, 107.3 (S) Torque: 1.8 ®, 1.7 (S) Description: Lightweight steel shaft that has a mid flex point and a mid to soft tip section. A very common shaft found in the G2 and G5 series. Ball Flight: This shaft is designed to hit the ball the highest of all of the shafts offered at this flex.

Z-Z65 (Stiff): Weight: 108.8g Torque: 1.6 Description: An updated version of the ZZ-Lite. Lightweight steel shaft that has a high flex point and stiff tip section. This shaft is only offered in stiff. The Z-Z65 is similar in flex to a Dynamic Gold S300, but is much lighter in weight. A very common shaft in ISI irons through current iron offerings. Ball Flight: This shaft is designed for a mid-ball flight due to the weight. It should fly lower then the CS-Lite and higher then the DGS and DGX.

ZZ-LITE (Stiff): Weight: 115.0g Torque: 1.9 Description: Very similar to the Z-Z65 but heavier in weight. The ZZ-Lite has a high flex point and stiff tip section. A very common shaft in Eye 2 irons. Ball Flight: Same as the Z-Z65. (NOT available for new orders)

JZ (Regular & Stiff): Weight: 109.8g ®, 115.1g (S) Torque: 1.9 ® 1.7 (S) Description: A mid weight steel shaft that plays a little softer than the Z-Z65 and ZZ-Lite. A very common shaft in Zing, Zing 2, and ISI irons. Ball Flight: Due to the mid flex point of this shaft it is designed to hit the ball between the CS-Lite and the Z-Z65. (NOT available for new orders)

DGS (Stiff): Weight: 124.5g Torque: 1.5 Description: Dynamic Gold S-400. A heavy shaft with a high flex point and a stiff tip section. Ball Flight: Weight of this shaft should hit the ball lower then all of the shafts except the DGX.

DGX (X-Stiff): Weight: 122.8g Torque: 1.4 Description: Dynamic Gold X-100. A heavy shaft with a high flex point and a very stiff tip section. Ball Flight: This shaft is heavy and aimed at players with a high swing speed or quick tempo. The shaft should produce the lowest ball flight of all shafts listed.

KT & KT-M (Stiff): Weight: 106g Torque: 1.9 Description: A mid weight shaft with a high flex point and stiff tip section. These shafts are most commonly found in Eye2, and Zing irons. Ball Flight: Mid, similar to ZZ-Lite (NOT available for new orders)

Microtaper (Stiff): Weight: 115g Torque: 1.9 Description: A mid-weight shaft with a high flex point and stiff tip section. This shaft is very similar to the KT Shaft. Most commonly found in the K series, Eye, and Eye 2 irons. Ball Flight: Mid, similar to ZZ-Lite (NOT available for new orders)

Hi Andreas,

I'm sorry to say this... there are more than two variants of Eye2.

There are the original Eye2 with V grooves

then the Eye2 with square grooves

then the Eye2 with square grooves and rounded groove edges. these are the sets that caused the problem with the ruling bodies.

then they released the Eye2 "plus-no-plus" model, which had the square grooves of the Eye2 with the lofts and slightly different head shape of the Eye2+

there's an Eye2 Dot set, which have the post-agreement square grooves that are slightly farther apart, but have the Eye2 head shape and lofts

And finally, the Eye2+ set, which like the Eye2 Dot set have post-agreement square grooves that are slightly farther apart, but have slightly stronger lofts and a slightly different head shape than the Eye2 model

lofts of Eye2 and Eye2+, 1 iron thru LW:

Eye2: 16.0 / 18.5 / 21.5 / 25.0 / 28.5 / 32.0 / 36.0 / 40.0 / 45.0 / 50.5 / 57.0 / 61.0

Eye2+: 16.0 / 18.5 / 21.2 / 24.5 / 27.7 / 31.2 / 35.0 / 39.5 / 44.0 / 48.5 / 53.0 / 58.0

The easiest way to see the head shape difference is to look at the short irons or wedges of an Eye2+ 8 iron thru wedge, and compare to an Eye2 8 iron thru wedge. The Eye2 have a flatter sole from leading edge to trailing edge, the Eye2+ have a sole that's rounded from leading edge to trailing edge.

I believe there are other slight differences, but I've never compared them side by side myself, so don't wish to speak to those possible differences.

At ironfinder.com, you can see pictures of Ping irons, you could look at both the Eye2 and Eye2+ and see the difference. The other variations like plus no plus, eye2 dot, etc, are a bit harder to find online, but you can sometimes discover information on the internet with some searching efforts.

I shared this link elsewhere in the GolfWRX forum. Very helpful when trying to figure out exactly which model you have. http://www.equip2golf.com/archives/history/ping_frameset.html?ping_eye2.html~archives

There is one man in America that I am aware of that does it. And your experience will be second to none with his craftsmanship, time, effort, and cost. I'm still blown away by it, he only works with older pings. It was one of those things that you wish you could have more business deals like this in your life. His name is Ron and he is on ebay. Type in ping restoration and you'll find him. A lot of wrx's member can vouch for him.

He did my Eye 2s and they are like new. I had him put in Dynamics and Pure grips as well.

So I called Ping and the CSR had to ask the company historian and called me back. The numbers are just mold numbers and have nothing to do with the groove spacing.

Picked up a $65 set of Ping Eye2 Plus at a Pawn store yesterday. Black dot, good condition but they had ZZ Lite shafts (which I like) Have never seen a set of Plus's with ZZ Lites before so feel I may have got the best of both worlds. So was it common to have Plus's with ZZ Lites?

Also does anyone think it is infra dig to pair them with Cleveland 588 RTG;s 54 and 60 degree to round off the set?

Together with my Ping Eye2 putter and TM Aeroburner 15 Degree Driver and 19 Degree Jetspeed Hybrid and 4-PW Ping Eye 2 Plus. I now have a twelve club set that can fit comfortably in a stand bag and have every shot I play covered. Investment total in my set comes to about $200. Now that seems a bargain to me!

Just to add. the ZZ Lite must be a unique shaft in the history of clubmaking. I only have about 70mph of club head speed witha 6 iron and undoubtedly it is a stiff shaft but there is something in the balance of the clubhead and the shaft that makes it a lot more playable. I think the tip must be very soft although the kickpoint is mid. There is something going on there. Karsten was a clever man. I remember reading a book by Peter Alliss written in the 1980's where he recommended for average men a slightly stiffer but lightweight shaft. The photo on the cover of the book has him wielding an Eye2 iron! - Truly a unique shaft I think.

Thanks.

So I do have an original Eye2 SW with ZZ Lite. As the Eye2 Plus PW is 48.5 and the Eye 2 SW is 57.5, I am thinking having turned down to a 56 degree club and by my reckoning it will move a little of the offset and get it down to 12-13 degrees of bounce. Anyone ever done this or thinks it is a good idea?

Thanks.

The wedges are the truth. Easiest wedges to hit ever, I think. The W/PW is really a gap wedge too, so the W,SW,LW I have in my bag fit perfectly with my 5-PW V-Foils in which my PW is 45* (Ping Eye 2 W is about 50.5*)

Found it interesting, but he didn't bother to point out the faster ball speed and distance of the G was due to it being basically a half club stronger (unless I missed it). Just short of a half club stronger, 5 yds farther, that's about right.

Don't worry about the number stamped on the bottom of the club, worry about the loft. :)
