Cleveland Classics Persimmon

Recommended Posts

My Crenshaw/Stewart 3-wood is an RC85 with bore thru hosel and butterfly sole plate.

Tex-

ALL RH Cleveland Classics have the drill-thru hosels. The Classics like the RC85, Crenshaw, Nelson, and Dunleavy have butterfly soleplates with 5 screws.

No LH Cleveland Classics have drill-thru hosels, unless specifically requested.

Not to be a contrarian, but for discussions sake I just recently found a Driver/3wood Crenshaw set at Goodwill that appears to have come from the factory with an H.E.T. graphite shaft. They both lack a bore through hosel. I can't find much info about the H.E.T. shaft, and it isn't labelled for flex.

Is there a reason the graphite shafted models would lack the bore through hosel of the steel shafted versions?

It's a first for my view. My apologies.

Know the Cleveland Classic catalog stated the drill-thru shaft was one of the features on Cleveland Classic Persimmon woods.

Graphite HET shaft in Ben Crenshaw signature Driver?

Usually there was a flex listed on the HET shaft label.

Custom Clevelands.

I apologize of this is the wrong forum.

I was wondering if there was some sort of document which listed the various Cleveland Classics Persimmon models offered during their production years. I highly doubt if there is anything as well done as the MacGregor Catalog but something along those lines. I own a few of the persimmon drivers and three woods but from time to time a model will popup on Ebay that I never knew existed. I'm interested primarily in what set the models apart from each other. For example, I've read the RC 85 was Roger Cleveland's take on the MacGregor M85.

Thank you in advance.

Matt

Matt-

Cleveland Golf is one of the equipment companies listed in the Golf Identification and Price Guides. You should find most every model they offered there.

As you can see by the photos, Teevons has a number of items from Cleveland Golf.

Cleveland produced a number of catalogs, and most of their models were shown.

Not a worry Rex, I can't really find much on graphite shafted Crenshaws either. The only markings on the H.E.T. shaft is a shaft band signifying it's an H.E.T. shaft and a red Cleveland wordmark.

Going off what you said about Custom Cleveland, did Cleveland have a custom shop program like Wilson Staff and the like did back in the day? Could this one have been speced with a graphite shaft and no bore through hosel from the factory?

Samtay-

Cleveland Golf had a Tour Van, so it figures they could customize something one of their Staff players wanted.

Make no mistake- your Ben Crenshaw with the HET Graphite shaft is rare, as Cleveland first offered the shaft in 1991.

My LH Cleveland Classic TC-15 Woods were made near this time period, and would be considered Custom model.

In addition to the sweepback soleplate,, they have the drill-thru hosel, which was NOT a feature for LH models.

If anyone knows where one might find a RH Cleveland Byron Nelson 68.3 model 7 iron, I know someone who's looking for one....

Here is the photo of the RH/LH Cleveland Classic TC-15 Drivers we showed a few moons ago-

My apologies for the photo not being in focus..

As stated earlier, Cleveland Golf did NOT offer ANY LH models with the butterfly soleplate/5 screws.

Their mantra was the following-

"The best Persimmon wood of all time was the MacGregor Tommy Armour 693 Model, which had a Sweepback soleplate/ 4 screws.

I thought I may have commented on this topic, but I guess I didn't. Beautiful woods, several years ago, I got a nice TC-15 driver at Goodwill, for $3, a steel shafted bore though model. I actually didn't buy it instantly, went back for it the next day.

I've hit it a few times, but really forgot about it till reading this thread. It still has the original Cleveland grip, all dried up, and cracked.

Those old woods are a work of art.

Given the influx of Cleveland persimmon woods on eBay recently, I figured I'd resurrect an old thread pay homage to some of my favorite Cleveland models in my collection. First up, is a set of Cleveland Limited RC693 - Driver, 3w, 4w set.1181545858_IMG_20210301_1127512902.jpg.7da627eb48a6e06e44d18db8af3912c4.jpg1946107597_IMG_20210301_1128550132.jpg.b2923aa3e555495ce637852f529371e9.jpg

Next up, Cleveland Limited RC945. Three clubs total, two drivers and a 3w.759593863_IMG_20210302_113258493_HDR2.jpg.7069c018993c505231ec1118733ea531.jpg2036752595_IMG_20210302_1133523602.jpg.d6b73b9043c5036977219cbd5db80c36.jpg

And finally, who doesn't love a Jumbo model persimmon.1841077057_IMG_20210301_1647593932.jpg.98a4321c61a2f5c536b730b47cec3b5b.jpg1595143638_IMG_20210301_1649562712.jpg.b936c7e4c6163e566461a8e705035a80.jpg1283481778_IMG_20210301_1647199412.jpg.dbe195756d836869033586c565ac5233.jpg

Lovely clubs!😍

All the drivers look quite deep faced? It may just be a trick of the light but the left hand 945 looks deeper faced than the middle one?

Cleveland are still a gap in my collection......based on these that might be corrected very soon!

They are all rather deep faces, checking in right around 1 3/4". Your eyes are correct too, the RC945 on the left is about 1/8" deeper than the middle club. Something else interesting with these two particular drivers is the plate engraving. The Cleveland Limited series clubs were made in sets 1-1000 and are labeled as such. These however are labeled SLS/005 and S-05/LTD??

Since I'm at it, here are the Cleveland drivers I already had. I love all of these clubs and they get played (mostly).

1) 10th Anniversary driver, nice club but had some poly issues so I gave it a sand and dip to seal it up. Not perfect, but good enough to play.

2) RC 85 (I had to re-set the shaft and re dip, but it is playable again)

3) Byron Nelson Tour Van head, never shafted and never hit. Now that I have the other Nelson, I'm not sure if I'll keep this on my desk, shaft it and play it, or sell it. I don't need two, but I really don't want to let this leave me either.

4) TC 15, slightly shallow for me, but I hit it well.

5) RC 69...this is the one...I crush this.

6) RC 69 Tour Van head, I shafted this and put a leather wrap on it, but haven't hit it yet. I will eventually.

Beautiful. I actually like a shallow face, so the TC15 looks really good to me.

I'm posting some more Clevelands because, well because Clevelands are really nice. The first group of four is from my recent lot of 50. I'm really fortunate to have found these four.

1) Byron Nelson, unhit and beautiful. The Nelson head is so nice, it has a good shaft for me, and will get played.

2) Ben Crenshaw, played, but in great shape. I've been looking for one of these and boy, is it nice. The pecan colored strip in the insert is particularly attractive. This shaft is a bit stout for me, so I'm debating what to with it. No rush, for now I'll just keep it in the office and admire it.

3) RC 945 Limited, such a sweet head. I really like this one, Neuman calf to boot.

4) Cleveland Jumbo, EOM insert and unhit. I haven't see a lot of these fellas and definitely a unique shape for a Cleveland.

These are all beautiful! 😍

The grain is excellent but I am particularly mesmerised by the unhit Byron Nelson. Te grain on that club is perfection as is the clasic colour combination of the wood and plain deep red insert. Glorious!

I have a Cleveland shaped hole in my collection that needs filled!

I'm late to the Cleveland Club, but have become an obsessive convert after picking up my first RC 69 for $10. They play so well, can be found in good shape for good prices, and have some really nice models.

That Nelson is great, even a bit too good perhaps. (The Crenshaw is just as good, by the way). I bought that Nelson because the Tour Head I have so too perfect to hit casually, now I have two heads too perfect to hit casually. I'm pretty sure the one you like will be put into play next summer. I also, by the way, have a roughed out, unfinished Nelson head. It feels like someone went a bit deep on the toe with a sander, like a mini speed slot, which is likely why it was never finished. I can't decide if I want to keep that as a desk ornament or finish it, but I suspect I'll finish it some day.

It's not a surprise, but you have some great clubs there. Is that RC 69J one of the tour van heads? That club looks so nice from the top I'm guessing it is. Just a wonderful looking club, its hard to imagine a better looking head. Do you know what the J stands for?

I have two of those tour van heads, an RC 69 and a Byron Nelson. I shafted the RC 69 but still have the Nelson on my other desk. I haven't hit the RC 69, but definitely will some day.

I think the 945 is the sleeper of the pack. Mine is unhit and just needs a little clean up on the lead before its perfect. Such a nice shaped head, mine will defiantly see some rounds.

I think Clevelands are the perfect clubs for modern persimmon players. You can pick a decent player up for cheap or you can find one in unhit or almost perfect shape for reasonable money. They look great, usually have good shafts, play as well as anything I've ever hit, and they are easy to collect. Yours are as good as they get.

Good point on the shafts…that’s one of the main reasons why I’m acquiring Cleveland’s. S300’s and 400’s match my blade shafts without any questions or issues when dealing with the history of older shafts.

I had gamed two Cleveland Classic drivers early in my golfing career.  The first was a Tour Action 485 driver I bought from some guy at a driving range in Colorado Springs because I liked it.  The second was a DG43 driver I purchased at a golf store in Delaware just after moving there in 1989.  I had the shaft of that driver and insert changed to a TT X100 and MacGregor old stock R/W/R fiber by my club guy in 1990.  I gamed the DG43 until I found a MacGregor Toney Penna TP Special in early 1992 and put that in the bag the spring of 1992.  I still have the DG43 gamer and have added a RC945 Limited driver, a second DG43 driver (courtesy of Fred Clark) and a RC69J head.

The following are pictures of the RC69J, RC945 Limited and my DG43 gamer.

Here’s One that you  have likely never seen before.   It’s  one of two that I’ve ever seen with the Cleveland logo on the outer toe which I believe was a made for TV edition for tour players. I have pretty much every Cleveland persimmon Drive or in my collection. Always been a big fan.  I purchased this new old stock head only and had a shafted up and gripped with a leather Neumann  wrap

I play with a TC 15 with a DG S400 shaft. Basically my 3 wood but only hit it off the tee. Been looking for another one as a backup in good shape. So far they are either beat up or way too expensive. If anyone has a lead, it would be appreciated. Love that there are others who love the persimmons!

I picked up a number of Dunaway Cleveland’s last year.  The  red insert model is one I’ve never seen.   I have a few other models now - one M85 like and other more common white inserts with black firing pins.  I usually like stained vs painted persimmons but these are pretty cool.  I have half a dozen or so Of that model.
