Forged Cavity Backs for under $300

What would you go with?

I'm sure that there have been similar threads on this topic in the past, but I can't find one put in these terms.
If you had $300 to spend on a set of irons and were looking for a good used set of forged cavity backs, what would you buy?
I have seen several nice looking sets if 704 cb's for less than $200, but the only set that I've owned to date are Adams a3's so I'm not set on any particular brand.

You can't go wrong with a set of Hogan Apex Plus. They're getting harder and harder to find in good shape but occasionally they pop up for under $300. If you can get your hands on a set I'm sure you'll be pleased. They stand toe to toe with anything being offered now, and their classic good looks are icing on the cake.

Definitely a classic looking club. How to they compare from a forgiveness standpoint with something like the AP2's?

There are tons of these in great shape online in the $300 range. I'm always a bit worried about Callaway's because I've had a couple of friends get scammed into buying fakes. Probably paranoia on my part.

Nice forged set, going sub $300 new just about everywhere Ive seen them. Great clubheads frankly.

Not a mizzy or cobra S3 Pro, but I thought they outdid TM forged and the Nike VR stuff personally.

I was very close to putting them in the bag.

Those 704's aren't the prettiest clubs to my eye

You can usually find some Cobra pro CBs for under 3 bills on ebay as well

I just picked up 5-pw Callaway Razr X Forged in average condition from the Callaway Preowned site for $359.99, I know its not under $300 but for a little more I got an awesome deal. They got here and ended up closer to Very Good condition . That site is worth a try. I sold my other clubs to my buddy and only ended up paying $180 for very nice forged clubs.

spend 150 on cobra ss forged.......then give the other 150 to your lady so you can play more..........cuz youll want to when you get those clubs

Go for a second-hand set of Callaway Diablo Forged...........These are becoming very sought after but if you shop around you'll find a set - maybe for a bit more than you are willing to pay............but you will not be disappointed. As many members here have found.

Yuuuup!!! Mine can't seem to get kicked out of the bag. Very forgiving and look good too. Top line is a little thicker but I appreciate my miss hits going 90% of where good hits would have landed plus I got over the look in 2 seconds.

I don't know if you are a righty or a lefty but I frequently see brand new sets of 09 Callaway X-forged in lefty going for $250-$299 on Ebay and other deal sites all the time. Great irons, very forgiving, buttery soft, can work the ball, stock Project X shaft is very good, pretty big fan of these sticks. And I wouldn't hesitate to put them up against the newest forged offerings out 3 years later, they are great clubs. I think as recently as last year (switched to Razr X forged this year I believe based on info on here), Phil carried these occasionally in his longer irons (2,3,4).

There are so many out there that your options are almost limitless.

First thing I would ask is how forgiving you want them to be. Do you want just the barebones players cb, or do you want something more forgiving? They have definitely made some very forgiving players cavities in the past few years.

After that, you should decide what kind of turf interaction you need. Digger or sweeper?

Finally, I would focus on aesthetics. Obviously you want them to look good in your bag, but at address is also very important. I am personally more concerned with toe shape (I like more square) and heel-toe length (I like them not too long) than topline.

The J33 cb have to be one of the best cavity backs ever, should have never sold mine. Also might try the J38 DP's, I love mine, not bulky and thinner topline.

But really, one of the most under-rated forged irons IMHO. Amazing performance and feel for a nice price. During my time with them, they kicked many other more well known OEMs outa the bag. I only decided to sell them because they are a third set and were being replaced in the lineup with a GI-type club. I also have some J40 CBs (love those) and some MP58s that I use to experiment with different shafts from time to time.
