Grip cleaning

I need to clean my grips. I've done some research and the majority of people suggest using dish soap and to rinse with water thoroughly and then spray with windex and rinse.

 

What do you guys use?

I remember seeing a show a while back with Tom Watson, I think, and he used sandpaper to refresh his grips.

I turn on running water until it's steaming hot and put a dab of dish washing liquid on an old toothbrush and scrub each one for a minute or two, then I run the water over them until I feel confident I got all the soap off.

I like using lower % alcohol wipes. Quick and simple. they have worked well with golf pride tour velvets,dd2, tour wraps and ping id8 for me with no problems.

Just dont soak in a bucket. I just changed grips for a friend and his shafts had at least an inch of rust.

I don't know what the Windex might be for. Anything that won't come off with warm, soapy water on a stiff brush with a little elbow grease probably ain't coming off with Windex. Just wet the grips, soap up the brush and scrub. Then rinse and wipe down with a clean towel. I've never gotten anything on a grip that didn't come right off using that technique.

Yeah... I was surprised about the Windex too. They said that the ammonia gets in the cracks and cleans it up but you have to be sure to wash it off or else the grip will dry out and crack.

I mist them with simple green.

Fill the sink with hot soapy (dish) water and set them grip end in the water, scrub em with a scrub brush, rinse, towel dry, repeat. I do the heads at the same time as well.

I wouldnt suggest soaking them as someone stated earlier they have a greater chance of rusting.

I always start by sticking a tee in the grip vent hole to keep water out. Get the grip wet with hot tap water, then scrub the grip using liquid soap and a nylon-bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly with hot tap water and air or towel dry. Been using this method for years with good results.

I use hot soapy water (simple green is good) and aggressively scrub the grip with a scotchbrite pad. The abrasives in the scotchbrite renews the grip surface and the soap removes oils. I wouldn't use this technique with Winn grips or similar, but for the typical grip with a rough surface, this technique works great.

Westley's Tire Cleaner with "Bleche-Wite"

I run water over the grip, spray with Westleys and clean with a toothbrush. Rinse well. So far, this is the best result I've had for my White Iomic Grips. Works a lot better than dishwashing liquid or soap. Depending on what type of grip you have, I don't recommend anything abrasive like the soft nylon bristle brushes or the scotchbrite pad, like the poster said, it may ruin your grip depending on what it is. I've ruined a few of my iomic grips using the soft nylon brushes and other experimental cleaning agents like Magic Eraser. To be fair, I can't remember if I ruined any grips with magic eraser, but it didn't perform as well as I hoped, it is amazing with your golf shoes though! Generally, anything softer will ruin easier with the use of the abrasive cleaning products.

Most common grips are made by a molding process followed by sanding down the surface to create the rough texture. With use the outer surface of the grip becomes smooth as the roughness wears away and oils from your hands embedded into the rubber. To renew the grip you need to both remove the oils AND restore the original texture, which is why I recommend the scotchbrite pad scrub down. A nylon brush to scrub the grip will not produce the same results.

good tip for people with the more "rough" texture. This would include grips like Golf Pride New Decade Multicompound right? Probably one of the most popular and widely used grips as well. My comment on ruining grips was only for grips that were softer like my iomics. But good tip, didn't know the sanding on the grips, interesting read.

With my Iomics I just put them under hot water and then towel dry. Seems to return them to a soft and tacky state.

There's a fundamental difference in cleaning rubber (real or synthetic) vs. thermoplastic grips. Rubber grips the idea is to 'get down into' the surface and by some combination of water, detergent and mechanical means dig out the ground-in dirt. Then you remove the dirty/damaged outer bit to present a fresh rubber surface. Ultimately, you wear away the actual grip material as it is used and gets cleaned.

With thermoplastic grips like the Iomic or 3GEN the dirt stays right on the surface. The object is to 'float' the dirty off without doing any harm to the smooth surface of the grip. It basically presents the same, original finished surface until it wears out. The durability comes from rejecting dirt and oils so they never dig in below the surface. Water too stays on the surface. Eventually that very outer bit of the surface is worn away and the grip is replaced but with proper care it takes a long time.

Durability for rubber grips comes from being able to shed that dirty surface layer while having plenty more usable material just below the surface. Until eventually too much of it is gone and the grip is shot.

Clorox wipes have been pretty good and have cleaned up my white grips well, too. They work wonders on Tour Velvet's. Plus they smell nice when they're done.

The only issue I've had is with a White Iomic Absolute putter grip. It gets the black streaks from the other grips rubbing.

I clean my NDMC Grips every 3 to 4 rounds in this way: 1. Scrub good with dish soap solution of 2-3 drops per 2 gallons of warm water. 2. Rinse well. 3. Pat them dry with a towel and allow to air dry for an hour prior to returning them to the golf bag. My NDMCs have lasted almost 3 years, my local golf guy refused to replace them 2 months ago telling me that there is plenty of life left on them. The oils and dirt really do break the grips down faster- no lie.

Be careful not to break the tee! easy fix: use a plastic tee!

Also, using sandpaper is very effective for cord grips

also try to resist the urge to touch the grips as soon as your done cleaning and let them air dry. your hands will be dirty and sweaty from the elbow grease involved with cleaning your grips. Put some music on and take your time!

No joke...works great... Clorox Disinfecting Wipes...take one and scrunch it into a ball and scrub the grip till it lathers up...rinse with warm water, then towel drip and let sit. TACKY and NEW feeling on grips after 5-6 rounds. Cheap too..!

+1, it's great for a quick touch-up!!

For more intense cleaning jobs, I go with either Bleche White or 409 Cleaner/Degreaser. Both work great on IOmic Stickies.

I use something like the little OXO nylon brushes that hold dish soap. Use the dish soap, scrub liberally and rinse thoroughly. All your trying to do is remove the dirt and worn out rubber. Using some of the other chemicals can really mess up the rubber. Dish soap will have very little impact on the rubber and do a great job with getting the dirt off.

Do not soak the grip in water. Just get them wet so the soap can do its job.

That's why Bleche White is popular- it's a cleaner designed for whitewall tires. Rubber friendly!
