CUSTOM BYRON VVS1 w/ pics

my newest addition to the putter collection
I had been contemplating another custom putter for ages. Tossing ideas around my head and off of my friends like Beruo and pm hacker. I tried to figure out what style I was leaning towards and what particular looks appealed to me. I finally figured out that I wanted an Anser style with flat bumpers. Sounds simple but in my eye it's not very simple. I like softer lines but at the same time a squared off look from the top. In my opinion the squared off look helps with my alignment. But at time, the squared off look can be too blocky or the way the toe and heel slope down can be too round or cut off in an angle that doesn't please my eye. I'm very picky even though it seems I may just buy every putter available. But really, there are certain key elements that are needed to make my collection.

After numerous searches for the particular putter head I wanted, I saw something close to it from Byron Morgan. I had always been a fan of Byron and have owned many of his putters under his previous companies name, "John Byron". I contacted Byron and after several emails, grew very comfortable with him. I had the feeling he wanted to build my "dream" putter. Not because it was a business matter but because it's what he does. I felt that Byron was really interested in my thoughts and at the same time shared his thoughts on what he felt would work better. Byron was extremely patient with me and incredibly open to my thoughts. I felt a connection where I knew what I wanted in a putter was going to be met and the end result would in fact be my "dream putter".

After the putter head and specs were decided, the monkey wrench was thrown in. What was I going to call this. I again tossed ideas off of Byron. He shared the thoughts he had an also what his wife said he should do. Yup...Byron's wife has great taste too. I came up with a "Diamond" theme. In diamond speak, VVS1 is a top grade of diamond. I also told Byron that it could also stand vor "Very Very Special One". Which is what I wanted this putter to be. I also wanted OOO stamped. Triple O's standing for One Of One. I have always like a vertical stamp because I think it looks cleaner on the face so I asked Byron to do that for me. To keep with the Diamond theme, I also asked him to stamp a diamond on the face.

The end result of our putter design is this. A Byron Morgan Proto VVS1, 350grams with sound slot. I think it came out looking fantastic. From the rudimentary drawings I submitted to him to the final result...I don't think it could have came out looking more like the putter I had in my mind.

Thank you Byron Morgan for allowing me to have my say and work with you throughout the making of this putter. It was fantastic working with you from start to finish. I know his hands worked on my putter all the way from beginning till it was packed and shipped at the post office. I don't know how much more connected any putter maker can be to his product. I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend Byron to anyone. It was a complete pleasure.

Thanks for the replies guys. I hope everyone can see the pics now. Darn photobucket! Now stop teasing me in pm's about my drawing! :) Now you know why I majored in Criminal Justice and not Art in college! :)

I'm really pleased with it. The roll and feel I have off of this is easily as good if not better then the CT's I've had. Although I'll still love my Scotty's, there's nothing like working personally with the guy making your putter from start to finish. It give's you a whole different confidence and feeling in your putter. I wouldn't hesistate for a moment to plan more future puttes with Byron. :)

Reid, what can I say. You have now taken Putter Ho'ness to a new level. It looks awesome. Nice to see that the wait and anticipation were worth it. Only thing is, I don't think you can just grab something "off the rack" anymore! :)

Unfortunately, I give this putter a bag life of 4 weeks (considering your trends) before you sell it to me as it already has my initials stamped on it :)

Four weeks? Pretty optimistic Russ! :)

should have stamped it "IF"

If it was a Tiffany platinum putter, then "IF" would probably fit. :)

WOW.

only here.

thanks for the great story & pix.

i am sure that it is but is the face milled - can't see from the pix

what is the material & finish?

The putter is stainless steel and the finish is called Stainless Satin Mist. The face is milled. The sunlight probably hid the milling marks. Here's another pic that Byron sent me that shows a little more of the milling. I requested a fine milling.

Now if only it was a mid slant it would be perfect :).....im jealous

Scott, I'm sure if you contact Byron or Z-Man..that could be done very easily. Check out Beruo's WITB. He had Byron weld on his neck of preference. :)

Absolutely Awesome! Everytime I see a customized Byron I like my 365 x-proto even more.

Did Byron start from scratch with that head or is it a 365 altered to your ideas?

Reading your thought process for what sort of putter you wanted makes me think i'm not alone. Very interesting and lovely putter.

Would it be rude of me to ask how much something like this would cost?

Emm

Hey Pit...This is prob rude but what kind of price are we talking for something that :)

No....it's not rude. Let me just say that it wasn't much more then what you would expect to pay for a retail Cameron. Write to Byron or contact Z-Man...you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Actually I'm not positive what this putter head started off of. It was a putter head I saw in his pictures in the computer milled section but it wasn't the 365 X-Proto. I just noticed it because it was a particularly square looking head but yet still rounded off.
