Does anyone use a 3 wood any more

In the minority here. I do not carry a 3 wood...took it out and added another wedge. I carry an 18 degree hybrid that I can hit very low if needed and move out to about 250 yards off the tee. Going for a par 5 from anything over 230 yards to me...TO ME does not makes much sense. Laying up to 70 yards I make a lot more birdies. I also hit my driver very well, hence another reason it was easy to take the 3 wood out of my bag.

+1, my 17 degree hybrid has a good distance gap over my 3 iron. 4 wedges helps me score more often than a 3 wood could. I usually am less than 230 out on par 5's unless it is a clear 3 shot hole setup where I would layup regardless. the hybrid puts me in the fairway on short par 4's as well.

#4 woods are the future!

This is what works for me. I've been struggling to find a good 3 wood and read an article about how the average golfer was more consistent in length and accuracy with the 4 wood. Went and gave it a try and haven't looked back. I had a buddy who had been crushing one for years. I really like the 4 wood and don't see myself going back to a 3 wood.

Still have a 15* 906F2 in the bag. Since I started playing tougher tracks than the city courses in Minneapolis, I find myself using it off the tee nearly as much as my driver and more so than the fairway.

I think you still need the 3 wood. The extra yardage might be the difference between reaching a par 5 or not. No doubt that hybrids are easier to hit, but if you get the right shaft and head combo in a 3 wood, you can't replace it.

For me a 3 wood is becoming a "short driver" on certain holes. I played a 36 hole tournament last week on courses of 7100 and 7400 yards and I didn't hit a single 3 wood until the 36th hole. Even then I only hit it because I was 260 out and had no chance at winning with water all down the right did I hit it, otherwise I would have hit an iron to 80 yards and played from there.

The only time I really find myself hitting my 3 wood is from the tee.

I agree with that. I bought one last year and have never looked back.

+1, bought a TaylorMade R9 4 wood and love it. I actual hit it longer than my 3 wood and with a lot more accuracy. I tried the #2 hybrid but couldn't hit it.

I don't use a driver anymore, only a 3 wood now as I see how many more Fairways I am hitting, scoring a lot better. I am not giving up much length either so it doesn't seem to be an issue. I am seeing a ton of 5 woods however being put back into the bag and hybrids out.

same here, literally havent used my driver in 10 or so rounds and I've shaved a good stroke or two already because of the fairways I'm finding. my 3 wood pokes a solid 260 so I'll keep that any day in the fairway over the 280+ woods balls I was hitting

I don't use a 3 wood, but i have always used a 4 wood. when woods first became metal they werent good, but got even worse when they made them really big. Now the shafts are so long on the 3, my tee 4 wood is just like my old wood woods but with a hotter face.

What i am saying is a 4 wood is easier to hit, you are closer to the ball. you have to be really good to hit a 3 off the deck.

I don't think anyone should hit a 3 wood off the tee. with the driver fitting and options today they can now correct any reason you were affraid of your driver. and if you are not good enough to hit the driver the 4 wood is about the easiest thing you will ever hit. I have placed in a couple of matches this way because it instills so much more confidence in me.

With all of the new hybrids out on the market I'm curious to see if anyone is using a 3 wood / 3 metal any longer.

I know you need an option off the tee that is less than driver but can't a 17* hybrid fill that need? <assuming that a 3 wood is 15* and the lowest loft angle of a hybrid is 17*>

AND... if you still game a 3 wood, do you *ever* hit it out of the fairway? Once a round?

I was at a golf show and one of the sponsors said that 3 woods are becoming a thing of the past. I didn't believe him one bit but ....

This whole thread is making the case that driver shafts are too long.

If Bubba = 44.5", why are OEMs nearing 46?

If there's a trend in this thread, it's that those that like their 3 woods use it off the tee a lot. Those that like their 4 woods like their drivers, and don't tee off often with their 4w.

Most 3w are 43" shafts, besides the smaller heads. I would put forward that if the 3w likers didn't feel the need for their 20 more yards on their driver, they'd be better served in accuracy. However, 3w likers are playing distance as their primary advantage.

It's really interesting.
