Taylormade V-Steel: Band of Brothers

After a LONG delay I am finally back among my band of brothers. I got the 7 wood mentioned in posts from 8 years ago back from my uncle. She’s not as pretty as she once was,  but still hits like a dream. I don’t know if he hardly ever used it. The grip still feels like new.

21* nv 75s playing at 41.5” swingweight d2! This thing has been great out of the rough and perfect from about 190 yards. Happy to play what work!

I've got an 18 degree V Steel 5w with stock TM stiff shaft if anybody is looking for one.  Happy to move it along to someone who will play it, rather than have it sit in my basement.  Feel free to PM me.  I'm in Minnesota, USA.

Hi all you V-Steel aficianadoes. Got a couple of questions.

I have a 15 degree 3 wood on the way that has the MAS Ultralite Regular shaft in it. I will, of course, try it with the shaft that is in it, but I have a couple other shafts I could try if it doesn't do what I want. I'm 68 years old, and my swing speed has slowed down a bit, or at least I think it has. I've been measuring distances all summer with my Garmin watch, and it's possible that I just always thought I was hitting it farther than I was. LOL This is more likely the case! Just went from a Stiff to Regular shaft in my Cobra Fly-Z driver this year, and I am very happy with the results.

Anyway, I have two Prolaunch Red pulls, one from a driver, and one from a 3-wood. Both are Regular. BTW, I have a Ping G15 4-wood with a Prolaunch Red Regular in it that I get plenty of height out of, but I'd like more distance. (That's why I bought the V-Steel 3-wood. It's an experiment!) Even though the two shafts I might consider for the V-Steel are Regular, everything I've read about them indicates they are kind of stiff. Wondering if not tipping the driver shaft for the 3-wood might soften it up a bit? I also have a Hzrdus 5.5 Smoke Black that I could put in the V-Steel. It has not been tipped either, but my guess is that it would be similar to the Prolaunch Red. Any opinions?

You might like the stock shaft. Give it a try. I put an old UST Proforce 76g shaft in my old V Steal and it was awesome. Those shafts are pretty cheap these days.

Took the V-Steel 15 with stock shaft to the driving range last night along with the Ping G15 4 wood, 2h and 3h Cobra F7 hybrids. The V-Steel appeared to be longer and more consistent. That really surprised me. I haven't had much luck with 3 woods before. That is how I ended up with the 4 wood. I also have a Cobra F7 4h, which is one of the best longer clubs in my bag. I hit it about 170 consistently. The 2h and 3h are not consistently longer for me. To be honest, the G15 is not consistently longer either, and I top it about 1/3 of the time, trying to get more distance out of it. I had a stroke about 16 months ago, and it affected my swing speed. I lost about 20-30 yards on my driver, so I am averaging about 205 yards, but drives are right down the middle most of the time, so I am not complaining. If I swing harder, nothing good comes of it, as I mentioned. Second shots are the key to my game. My G15 5 iron through the rest of the bag, I'm very happy with. Over about 175-180 on par fives and longer par 4s are my problem. I'm getting tempted to just lay up with the 4h on these holes and use mid-irons for my third shot if necessary (5i-8i).

I'll have to play the V-Steel 15 and see how its goes. If I hit it consistently, but not longer than 175-180 off the deck, I think I'll put the untipped Prolaunch Red in it and see what happens.

Still been playing my V-Steels since 2014 (before that was Callaway S2H2s for even longer) and not changing for a very long time since I love the feel and consistent distance wise.   Besides, I can't justify paying a few hundred dollars for a newer set of fairways  especially since the majority of them are still made of steel today (and likely in the future) and the lack of technological advancements because of it.

Sometimes being a nice guy really bites you in the keister. Several years ago, a prominent WRXer posted about having a VSteel stolen.  At no cost to him, I sent him a replacement club with the one stipulation that if he wasn't going to use it that it be returned and not sold, given away, or deposited in a bag of old clubs.  He willingly agreed.  Happened to see about a year later that it was no longer in his bag so I sent a note asking for it to be returned.

The only sound heard since, has been crickets.

I had no idea there was such a following for these old V-Steels.  I remember buying my 3W and 5W new in the early to mid 00s and playing them for a few seasons before moving across the country where they've largely sat untouched for the last 15 years.  Both have the ultralite MAS2 S shafts.  These were the bees knees back in the day.  I'll try to grab some pics this weekend.  They're still mint.

I have the 3,4,5,7,9 woods of the Callaway Great Big Bertha of the Hawkeye line.  All titanium head with tungsten plug.  Great woods.  The camber on the sole is unique and makes them very easy to hit from any lie.  No other woods compare to these for me.  They retailed for $399 in 2000.

Great thread to catch up on - been gaming a 15* for probably 15 years at this point.  Have a couple back-ups and just picked up an 18* to play around with a shorter set of clubs. Haven't been able to find anything I like the look of at address more and I just know where the club is going to go at this point.

Looks like I see "NS Pro" silk screened on the shaft, in your first pic?  That would mean it's a Nippon shaft, and not stock DG that was seen here in the US.  Could have been stock in the Asian market?  <shrug>

Once a stick isn't in current rotation, I usually sell/trade it, but I just couldn't get rid of my V-Steel 15*. I've recently been thinking about putting a 3 wood back into play and have been getting input from y'all on that or possibly a 4 wood.

Before I go down that route, I figured I'd give the V-Steel another crack.

It was always money for me off the tee, but since my driver got dialed in, I haven't needed it. And it was not good off the deck for me.

Any of you have recommendations for a new shaft that will help me hit it off turf? I have a Ventus Red in my driver and Atmos Orange in my 5 wood - both are TM made for and they are great for me.

I've had a V-Steel 4-wood in the bag for about 20 years.  DG Lite S shaft in there.  Most predictable fairway wood I've ever played.  Every time I go looking at fairway woods thinking I should buy something new, I don't find clubs that set up to my eye as well.  Still hit it long and straight - when I make a good swing.  Never worried about trying to crank a long shot with it.  Glad to see the club has such a following.  New member... old member.

I’ve joined the Band. The V-Steel 7 wood is perfect for the distance I am seeking to fill. I like how the head is smaller than a lot of more recent 7 woods. Very nimble. As easy to hit as an iron. The sound and feel is as good as this thread says it is.

Well, I'm here thanks to @Fuscinator, who posted in my thread yesterday about 7 woods for lefties. Since then, I've gone down the rabbit hole, and I have some offers in on eBay for left-handed V Steel 7 woods. Once I get one in, I think I'm going to put an old original Diamana Blueboard 103x in there. (Other option would be to put an S300 in it, and save the blueboard for the 3 wood or 5 wood that I'm also inevitably going to buy.)

How does the V Steel 7 wood play compared to some current 7 woods? Anything notably different about ball flight, forgiveness, workability, etc.?
