Vista is still in great shape but they have slowed the greens down a bit after the two tournaments they had out there which was kind of a bummer

Blackstone CC 1/18/2013

Kind of got suckered into this one, as I thought it was comped. Long story short, $125 unaccompanied because the member decided to go to Vegas and I wasnt informed.
First off, it is just behind Pine Canyon's clubhouse....one of the nicest I've ever seen. The men's locker room, outdoor patios and bar, restaurant and proshop are top notch. Not a single expense spared.
Driving range has club attendants that clean your clubs, Titleist DT balls, etc. Good stuff...and a no tipping facility.

The course was in great shape and the greens were probably in between an 11 and 12, which I like. However, the undulation in the greens made that speed at times absolutely and uncontrollably ridiculous. I three putted #1 and #3 because I had 20' putts coming back to the hole due to the pin positions. It would be a great course for a member to make some bets against his guests, as course knowledge of where to be on the green is key on many holes. I was a littler bitter after those couple holes and being penalized for simply not knowing.

No yardage books that I saw, and no hole layouts anywhere, so we were hitting some pretty blind guess shots. After a double on #9 due to a guessed 2nd shot into a blind par 5 green, I turned it up on the back and was (-1) through the first 3, and then carded 5 straight birds going into 18. Yep...needed a birdie on 18 to shoot 29. Good drive, 180 out, 7 iron to the front fringe. A simple up and down for 29, but chipped 6' short, hit the putt I wanted, lipped out left for a 30. Still cool, but still stung to not seize that moment.

All in all, great facility and a great course if you know where to be on each hole. I recommend playing it if you get the opportunity and the price is right, but make sure you play with a member or someone who has played it a couple times.

Blackstone would be a challenge indeed without a course guide. Some real head scratchers there. That said, I do believe the more interesting courses don't reveal themselves right away and I value that. The "all right there in front of you" courses are fine for a one time hit and run, but just become boring on repeat plays, and Blackstone was designed as a members course, not a tourist stop.

I played it one time in an AGA event and they did give us a course guide, which was helpful.. Sometimes bit overdone with the containment mounding, but this does provide some quirk and whimsy, definitely a change of pace from the typical courses in town. Would be a recommended play.

I do hope the club is doing ok. Another upscale development tied to real estate that opened right as the bubble burst. When I played, there were just a handful of houses completed. Can't imagine the debt service needed just for that palatial clubhouse (w/fitness center, several pools, tennis courts, etc).

I notice, they are running a Member for a Day "preview" offer. Round of golf with lunch and a facility tour for $50. Don't know if you need to show them an income statement prior to your visit or not - ha ha. If you can get through the obvious sales pitch, sounds like a good deal although I'm guessing a foursome of WRX'ers might not meet their qualifying criteria. :drinks:

Wekopa Saguaro and Cholla Jan 30/31 both courses are in pretty much perfect condition, Cholla's greens were rolling a bit faster than Saguaros and #8 on Cholla is still one of the dumbest golf holes ever

We have played Blackstone each of the last 2 years and have been treated as one of their own. I will agree with you regarding the mounding on certain holes and that there are 2 holes in particular, 9 & 14, could be labeled gimmicky but, I will also agree that it is this variety that lends the "quirk & whimsy" to the course.

Added bonus... one of the best chicken salad sandwiches I have ever had!

Whisper Rock, Upper course 2/14/13

Any of you know, you do NOT decline an invite to Whisper Rock. I was fortunate enough to get the nod to join a buddy, a member, and a fourth...and explained to the wife I would be home late, even on Valentine's Day with a 3week old at home.

We arrived 90minutes before our desired time we wanted to play(no tee times). The second you pull up it is 5star tripleA top-of-the-line elite exclusive Zagat drooling amazing....(have to get my point across.) The service is unreal and they are always 10minutes ahead of you wherever you go. Bags at the curb, valet parking, and they take your shoes and line you up with a locker for the day.
We had lunch in the Men's Only locker room/ grille/ bar/ hang out / mancave of a clubhouse. Amazing food and drinks, and then were escorted to our lockers to find our shoes. Strapped up we headed to the range, where our bags were perfectly lined up with our forecaddie ready to clean and pyramids of Pro-V1xs. A quick warm up just several yards away from Paul Casey (most of the other tour members were at Riviera), then to the putting greens. We rolled some putts across the perfect glassy greens and off we went to the first tee of the Upper Course.

Immaculate course and I thoroughly enjoyed the layout. The greens are insanely perfect, and while it is a little target-desert golf, it's still a fun risk reward style course that can treat you nicely or stab you if you get a little overly confident. Our caddy was great, less a couple obvious misreads I shouldnt have trusted but did. Birdied 18 for a three way win with my partner against the member and his guest!

Cocktails after the round were back in the men's grille where the TVs are bigger than my house and the furniture is more comfortable than my bed. I will say one of my favorite parts of the whole place is the putting green just outside the mens grille/bar large retractable doors. It is a bet settling green, long and relatively flat with 3 pins and a rack of putters for use including YES!, Scotty, Ping and Odyssey sticks. They say the bets get pretty large in the evenings when the stiff pours begin. I can only imagine the large bills thrown around amongst those guys.

It was such an experience, and overwhelmingly motivating to someday figure out a way to be a member there.

500 Club, 2/17/13
My father and I decided to try a course we hadnt played in at least 6 years. A little stiff at $80 for a morning weekend time, but thats kind of what you get outside the city courses this time of year.
Although there are some slightly goofy holes, it really is a fun course with some good elevation changes, some risk reward holes, and some newly renovated holes with water. Pace was great at 4hrs. Greens were ok, but a little bumpy most likely due to the heavy traffic the course sees and people not repairing marks. Fairways were quick and pretty compacted due to carts, but relatively great lies experienced. Great GPS units on all the carts which helps with some of the carries and big doglegs. They also have The Futures course...a little walking 9 hole course that they actually keep in good shape. I'd like to arrange a skins game there eventually, maybe late afternoons this summer.

Played out at Falcon Dunes AFB Saturday with some friends. If you can get on with a military member this is a fun track to play and it is in fantastic condition. The greens are fast and smooth. They started rolling them this winter - according to my member friends - one who works there.

Seems like conditions in the valley are great this year for the most part. I practice at Maryvale 2-3 times a week and it has been in good shape too. Papago is finally back and is superior too.

Great winter in PHX - rain at the right times followed by 75* makes the grass really green and lush.

Not that it really needs to be said but played Saguaro at Wekopa again today and pretty much in about as goof of shape a golf course can be in, even after a 40 minute frost delay

I played Troon Monument on this past Sunday and wasn't impressed. Greens in very poor shape and hard as concrete. First time playing the Monument and thought it was a pretty weird layout. Fortunately we I used the GolfNow dealcaddy I purchased a few months ago. Definitely not worth the $230 rack rate.

Played Southern Dunes today for the first time in a couple years and I will not be going back anytime soon. Bunkers are just downright awful, and on that course that is the last thing that should be sub par. Other than that the staff was nice and the course looks nice although I still prefer when they had the areas around the greens very closely mown to allow more of a close to the ground approach to the short game. I was afraid of this course getting away from its original firm and fast and that looks like it is happening. Too bad it was such a great design

Played Stonecreek today after finding a decent deal on golf now 49.99 for a 10:40 tee time. I had always enjoyed playing there as a mid tier course. I was really surprised today, they have put some money back into the course included new sand in the bunkers unlike Southern Dunes. They had also cleaned up some of the landscaping to make it more pleasing to the eye. Also let some of the rough grow in to narrow some of the fairways. Greens were rolling really well. Well worth the money for us north valley guys while the higher end tracks are still fetching well north of $100

Played GC of Estrella Saturday. Pretty poor shape, actually have never seen it in even below average shape considering it's usually in fantastic shape. Greens were sanded and shaggy, nothing rolled true. A few greens with nasty damage to them as well. Fairways having issues as well, a lot of them have dead areas. Overall it seems they were lacking water.

Played Legacy on Saturday in a scramble.... seems like that place is always in great shape. Not sure what they're bringing in for their greens fees, but it's always a solid track to me.
Fairways/rough were great and the greens were very receptive and pretty quick. Not sure how the bunkers were.

Played Vista Verde again last week great shape, greens had been top dressed recently but are still rolling great, They did change the yardage of some of the tees around a bit. The green is the new tips and still 7200, black plays at 7000 yards and gold had been moved up from 6800 to 6500 yards. They have different combo tees with official ratings on the cards which makes it pretty cool to change things up a bit.
