What club do you use for the 175 yard shot?

Me thinks lots of enthusiastic guesstimating. :) How far means a whopping diddly. "Carry", that's what we live by.

175 to the pin i'd assume?

On the driving range where i don't care where the ball lands then it's a hard 7 or easy 6 in terms of carry distance...

If its an approach shot to the center of the green @ 175 yards then
- front or middle pin it's less then 175 so hard 7-iron
- back pin means more than 175 then easy 6 with a 3/4 swing so it'd land short and roll to the pin

and of course club up/down depending on the course conditions, wind, and my overall form for the day where i might need to club up (when not swing well) or down (when having a solid ball striking round which is more and more rare these days!)

Also, i might club up and flight a low shot into the green if there aren't any hazards to carry and the terrain is relatively flat and the greens are narrow and long with hazards guarding misses left and right....

so lots of different ways to play shots depending on what shot type are easiest for you... The important thing to know is how long you HONESTLY CARRY your irons and then compensate from there because every 175 yard shot will be different...

A friend of mine jokingly hit his putter from 165 yards into a 30 mph head wind and got it on the green about 15 feet from the pin...

Last year I would of said a nice 7 iron, but for some reason this year I am nuking my irons. So now its normal 8. I am 46, so I not getting amy younger. The only thing I switched was balls. I went from a Pro V to a Pro Vx. I would think that would help a bit with a little less spin.

Pin middle or back, 7. If it's in the front, 6 or 7, depending on what's in front of the green. I'd rather be off the green and closer if the fairway runs into the green. If I can hit a running chip or hit a putt, GIR isn't that big a deal. I'd rather be chipping from 10 than putting from 30, unless I'm in long rough.

Ive never personally see someone carry an 8iron 175 yards in normal weather conditions, going by that you must carry a 5iron at least 220?!?!?! Thats my 6iron carry and im not short, i could prob get a 7iron close to that if i really stepped on it, but a normal lofted 8iron, hells no!

I have ping i15s and if I step on an 8 iron, 175 isn't unrealistic.

Who plays "stock" golf?? I use 5 or 6 iron, but conditions might warrant 7 or 4 iron. I have two yardages per club; easy & hard. laugh.gif Heck, certain conditions have me using 2 or 3 iron for 125 +/- yards. Point is every golfer should have "distance control" with all his clubs. Good scores are not the result of one shot style or distance per club.

Great points. Elkington makes a similar point coaching one of his SITD players in a video as she frets about what club to hit her approach with: "Forget about the number on the sole of the club, and what you think you should hit. They're all just tools - pull the one that you know will put you on the green."

I played 3 par 3's of this distance today, the first hole was a very good 4 iron into a strong headwind and a little from the left, 30 to 40 mph winds here, at least no rain. I hit a beauty to the front of the green, needed an extra club to hit the centre, and 3-putted the f***ing thing. The 5th hole Par 3 was same distance with the wind giving some aid from the left so was an 8 iron to the green, you will be pleased to know I got my par!!! The 14th was straight downwind, a 46degree PW to the back of the green, missed the putt, another par!!!
Usually 175 yards is a controlled 7 iron, a harder 7 going about 180. For anyone using Burner 2.0 its probably the gap wedge!!!

Lotta big hitters on GolfWRX Tony.
I see that, carrying 8irons 175 dead calm day, id say i could probably get my old TM burner 8iron to that if i jumped out of my socks ha
You understand those are customised 8 irons, with 2 inches longer shaft and a few generous degrees stronger than the old standard, with a hot face, and hitting the hardest balls possible!!!

These 8-iron 175's are crazy. I like to think I drive the ball a long way (a legit 280-290 with maybe 1 or 2 300+ yarders per round Bay Area sea level), but I only hit my 8-iron 155-160, couldn't get my 7-iron there and would probably have to hit a slightly less than full 6.

175 with an 8-iron only if was an RBZ... wait I would get 17 extra from that too, right?

I used to think that only pros could hit an 8 iron 175 as well... This year my game has really stepped up a notch and when im striking the ball well and have perfect condtions (no wind, 80 degrees, etc) I can step on an 8 and carry 175. My routine golfing buddy has measured more than a few shots this year to confirm (using Skycaddie)... Irons are stock Adams A12 with KBS tour shafts.

I play with a few big hitters that can pound the ball off the tee but are a good 1 club shorter than me with irons so its possible. Keep in mind that with a driver you are using a large forgiving head that can cover up a slight mis-hit. With an iron theres not much help.
