What club do you use for the 175 yard shot?

I read all of Page 1 but refuse to read pages 2-5 so pardon me if I address something that has already been addressed. Add to that I can't BELIEVE SO MANY guys actually responded with 5, 6, 7, whatever ? (OK, so that IS an assumption). If there's something of value in those other 4 pages someone please let me know.

What POSSIBLE difference would it make to you WHAT "we" hit for a 175 yard shot ?

How can that POSSIBLY help you decide ANYTHING ?!?!?!

I hit a 31* loft #7 iron from 175. . . . (but then I also live at 6,500 feet elevation. . . HA!! so at sea level I am a mere mortal on the distance pecking order ! )

OK, seriously, you really should try hybrids which are MADE TO THE SAME LENGTH AS THE IRONS YOU ARE REPLACING.

This matter of the industry making hybrids as low loft iron replacement clubs but then making them 1 1/2" or more, longer than the irons they are replacing is no good at all. Most people who buy the OEM hybrids off the rack in golf stores or pro shops end up hitting the ball longer than the iron of the same loft you were trying to replace. If a hybrid is to be a true low loft iron replacement club, then it should be made so that it hits the ball the SAME DISTANCE AS IF YOU HIT THAT LOW LOFT IRON PERFECT.

Irons are supposed to provide consistent distances for each club with the same increment of distance in between each iron. Otherwise you get gaps which mess you up when you play and cause you to try to over hit the club below or under hit the one above - neither which are good for consistent play.

Making the hybrids to have the same loft and the same length as the iron(s) being replaced is really the only way to do this so you end up with a full hybrid + iron set makeup in which you get reasonably consistent distances for each club with consistent gaps between.

I had been struggling to make the 175 shot and felt my swing or iron selection was all wrong. Then realized that i wasnt really making a complete swing.
By knowing that most hit a 5,6 or 7 i know im in the ballpark and dont need to make changes to my irons or shafts. If anything I need to adapt to a better full swing on a 5 or 6 iron.

7 iron, as far as the answer to your issue I would replace shafts in the hybrids and trim to correct the gapping problem.

Initially that was a hard question as I seldom have a flat, no wind shot to a yardage. I mean, usually the yardage is too the flag and I make some sort of mental adjustment based on pin placement. Anyway, I am over thinking as usual. I would probably hit a slightly choked up 6 iron or a 3/4 6. However, I typically play at 5000 ft. elevation. If I were at sea level I would either step it up to a hard 6 or choked to 3/4 5 iron. It would also depend on how I am hitting my irons that day. Sometimes they vary by one club if I am striking it well.

Smooth 5i, I'm not swinging hard right now so just trying to make good swings. Eventually I'm hoping my 6i will be this range (I don't like "hard" shots)
