The Rickie Rant

Recommended Posts

It is a good time to discuss my opinion of Rickie Fowler. I think this guy is a great golfer, kudos to the win last week. That was a difficult course and he conquered it. I think the game needed a fresh outlook on style and individuality BUT it did not need what Rickie Fowler advertises.

As a young golfer who would normally pick up on new trends rather fast I believe the neon color schemes, and the flat bill hats that Puma is producing is a sad front for the game of golf. I see golf as a traditional game, where a neon orange outfit complete with neon orange flat bill hat (with matching headcover) is not welcome. As much fun as the loud mouth attire is, I also think it is a sad attention grabbing sequence that disrespects this game. In 5 years when this neon trend quickly dies out, will rickie be the staple of leather golf pants, too? Rediculous.

Rickie, shave that thing on your upper lip, button your shirt up, bend your bill, and tone down the color. Respect the game of golf, and continue to accel by letting your golf game show your true color.

With all due respect, let me know if I am out of line. Does anyone else feel this way?

You can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe there was some interesting clothes choices going on in the 60's and 70's. I am not a fan of the flat bill, but I don't lose sleep over it hurting the integrity of the game. Trends come and go. Should we all be wearing coats and ties like they use to? I respect your opinion, but I feel that for golf to continue to grow and keep children interested in it you need people like Fowler and the other young guys.

if you're going to attempt an intelligent rant, at least spell correctly. the words you are looking for are: ridiculous (meaning worthy of ridicule) and excel (meaning to surpass others). accel...seriously?

that being said, i don't and will probably never own anything from Puma, but don't knock the kid for doing his thing. he could've gone the way of everybody else and worn traditional stuff and played traditional Titleist everything for forever but this guy practically opened up a new brand to the golf scene. he's marketing himself (and a brand) at a rate that is even higher than his incredibly talented golf game. did jordan disrepect basketball with his style designs? yes it could be a fad that doesn't last, but disrespect the game....seems a bit extreme.

if it's not for you, don't buy it. but a flat bill hat creates a sad front for the game...gimme a break. ok, i'm done.

i think he looks like an idiot, but i in no way support a stricter dress code for golf. Let them wear stuff like that if they want. I honestly don't see how it hurts the game.

I COMPLETELY agree, I have to call another guy out though, this Tom Watson, whippersnapper...

I mean WHO does this guy think he is with those colors, open collars, and long hair? He's a disgrace to the game...oh wait...nevermind...
hahah epic win...

I honestly don't like his style and his thin mustache but, each to his own. I don't understand how people always bring up traditions blah blah blah. People have always dressed like morons on the golf course I thought that was one of the fun parts about it.

So what do you think of Arnie and Jack when they wore bright colored clothing? Jack won the masters wearing skin tight plaid pants a big collar and one button...
You must really hate Gene Sarazin and Ian Poulter too huh?

I will never understand why people will dislike others because of the color of his pants or brim of his hat.

The guy has shown that he can play, better the game of golf, and represent the USA in the last Ryder cup.

Give it a rest already.

Hard to slam Rickie for fashion after enduring the 1970's.

You're not out of line, but I could not disagree more. Regardless of what either of us think, Rickie is one of the biggest draws on Tour, especially with kids. For any golfer who cares about growing the game, I think it's short-sighted to criticize anything about Rickie. He's good for golf, and we need to embrace that (whether you really like how he looks or not).

I could care less how he dresses on the course. Some of his clothes I like and some I don't. Every time I've been able to see him in person he has been nothing but respectful to his fans and will sit there and sign for anybody who asks. Just because he doesn't fit the traditional mold doesn't make him bad for the game. He sets a good example for younger kids and also attracts new fans. Also never really seen him throw a club/ curse or hear about him partying off the course. I mean the most controversial event from Rickie I ever heard was his backwards hat at Augusta. And even then he agreed to just turn his hat around and move on as if its no big deal. So maybe all the people who criticize his fashion can do the same and just move on and appreciate him as a person/golfer.

it's not my taste but I respect his style as being his own and he has every right to express himself within reason (by that I mean no sweatpants, tshirts ect.. Also with more people dressing like him it makes me look that much better on the first tee

Fashion will always be a function of time and place in history. As many have suggested each era has displayed eccentricities which some have welcomed and others have criticized. This situation is no different. I can't pull off Ricky's look to save my soul, but I certainly welcome the freedom which allows him to do so. Quite frankly, I think golf has many challenges, perhaps the greatest of which is maintaining and increasing accessibility to all, especially kids. Kids look at Ricky and his fashion the same way some of us adored other athletes...for me it was Tiger Woods. There are worse places from which to have kids draw inspiration than Ricky and whether you like it or not, part of Ricky's allure is neon.

Doug Sanders, 76, & Ian Poulter, 33: The Peacocks

BRIAN SMITH

Doug Sanders, 76; Ian Poulter, 33, in Augusta, Ga.Golf Magazine: You are two of golf's biggest style icons of the last 50 years. Critique each other.

Sanders to Poulter: Baby, I like your smile, and I like your style.

Poulter: You look great!

GM: What does style mean to you?

Poulter: It's about having confidence to express yourself, daring to be different. Once you've got that, it's about knowing what suits you and how to put an outfit together. My apparel company, IJP Design, put together outfit flowcharts to help people coordinate the outfits as they were intended when they were designed.

Sanders: You gotta be proud of what you've got on. You gotta feel like you've done your best to dress for you, not for anybody else. Then you've got style, then you've got class!

GM: Give us your biggest fashion confession.

Poulter: I am vain. I don't have my teeth whitened or my chest shaved, but I like to look good. Throw in a bit of hair dye. I sit in the barbershop longer than most men — about an hour and 20 minutes. And I'm a sucker for fragrances. You want to look good and smell good.

I will agree that the look is kind of ridiculous, but that is just my opinion. He seems like a real good kid and if he likes that look, as do a bunch of his fans, so be it.
You won't catch me wearing a flat brim hat, but I do remember back in the seventies we had some interesting "looks" also. We may not have worn them on the golf course but when it was time to shine we would break out the polyester shirts with huge collars, the biggest bell bottom pants we could find, and platform shoes. Now THAT was a look.

Do I like his flat brimmed hats and the mustache thing he's got going? I'm not a fan of flat brimmed hats in general (charley hoffman is the worst offender), but at times I don't bother shaving for days on end if I don't need to. But whether or not you agree, its good for the game. Kids are wearing that stuff because Fowler is, its not a bad thing when kids have someone they can follow in this sport, because they are the future of it. I don't mind Fowler's color scheme, heck if I was on tour and a good player I would want a trademark Sunday outfit as well. There are plenty of players that do that.

I'm not going to criticize someone my age with about $20 million more in the bank than I've got, especially not on a golf forum. I'm glad to see he's doing well.

If you're going to attempt an intelligent reply, use proper capitalization. I won't buy that your caps button is broken as you properly capitalized Titleist. "...for forever"? A bit redundant. Gimme? Did you mean "give me"?

If only the old photos of Bobby Jones, Tom Morris, etc were in color! They wore some crazy looking stuff compared to a conservative look from today. BW pics make it look dull and we tend to romanticize the past and feel we need to live up to their "conservative" style... when in fact they were all crazy.

There's no need to have so much fear. People have always been people doing human things.
